And numerous other classes even newer - in fact, all up to privatisation (apart from the privately-owned 59s) were built in England. But yes, Class 58 was the last Doncaster build. Also 58050 was the SEPEX testbed, surely that's of interest?

By that logic maybe someone should have preserved 47046 (47601/47901) since it was a test bed for the class 56 and then a few years later the class 58 projects ...

A couple of 45s hung around for many years prior to disposal didn't they? Don't recall one being stored at Knottingley though ( it was Toton wasn't it? ) but could one have been staged through Knottingly on the way for disposal?

Alternatively, has one of the preserved examples been staged through Knottingly at any point?
45015 survived in the Toton training compound into the early years of the 21st century before being sold by EWS. No Peaks stored at Knottingley in recent times though, as you rightly say, and I suspect that the one visible in that aerial view is probably a preserved example just passing through.

The blue 56 visible is probably 56006.

Just going briefly back to what a couple of people mentioned about 58's heading north of Crewe, I remember seeing a number of them on coal trains at Garston Docks along with the odd one passing the back of my house on its way to the northern end of Liverpools docks. 58's were rare but did turn up. Normally 56's and an occasional double pair of 20's! Speaking of which I once remember having 56015 on the front of a service from Liverpool to the south coast. Got the details noted down somewhere. 015 was one of the regulars around our way at the time.
