It's easy to say that now, as we all know rail freight has not took off since privatisation like passenger traffic did.

But what if rail freight had been a success? The FOC's would be trying to get their hands on all the locomotives they could get to cope with the increasing traffic. The 58's would have been especially useful with SEPEX fitted.

Unfortunately it hasn't worked out that way. At least the 'export' plan for Class 58 'worked', in a roundabout way..!

A sad set of pic's of the stored 58's in France or Spain, Bring them back home:

http://www.wnxx.com/images/plogger/index.php?level=album&id=957

And do what with them... watch them rust and rot here like they are in France?
and if you say use them, who do you imagine would use them... especially since all remaining locos are all (at least to my recollection) owned by DB Schenker (or its subsidiaries), and to date the only examples that they have sold (other than to other DB subsidiaries) have been scrapped (with the exception of 58016 that's preserved)... no reported interest at the time from any mainline operators to restore them to use, like the interest there has been with the class 56s.

Look in France, the current high speed line construction/extension projects... the contract operators for locos have hired class 66 type locos or diesel Alstom Prima locos rather than hire the 58s again, that's even if DBS offered them this time...

If 58050 remains in the National Collection we'll be needing that back from Spain. That's at least one to repatriate. And (as I did say earlier) since HS2 is supposed to be built to LGV standards, anybody up for using (any remaining) 58s as construction trains ;)

I just wonder if the NRM want a class 58 in their collection? Does joe public care 58050 was the last loco built in the UK?

Iirc it was the last loco built at Doncaster... I believe that's why its designated to be part of the national collection.

I think the class 60's are newer. ;)

And numerous other classes even newer - in fact, all up to privatisation (apart from the privately-owned 59s) were built in England. But yes, Class 58 was the last Doncaster build. Also 58050 was the SEPEX testbed, surely that's of interest?

There appears to be a Class 45 'Peak' parked a few tracks away. And all the cars in the surrounding streets are 1980s and 1990s models.

If you look close then it says (C)Google2009 which means it could of been taken in 2009?

Just because it says the imagery is 2009 does not mean you can take this as gospel. My house shows a greenhouse I dismantled about 5 years ago whilst stating 2012 imagery.

There is no way that was taken in 2009, more like 1995.
The 58s were not allocated to Knottingley for long, a couple of years at most.

Going by the Arriva bus and if you follow the line round to Ferrybridge depot (former National Power) you'll find a few class 56s and a couple in EWS livery. My guess is late 90s to early 2000s

If theres a 66 in that shot, why is there also a Cl.45 which was withdrawn in 1987?

A couple of 45s hung around for many years prior to disposal didn't they? Don't recall one being stored at Knottingley though ( it was Toton wasn't it? ) but could one have been staged through Knottingly on the way for disposal?

Alternatively, has one of the preserved examples been staged through Knottingly at any point?

I agree it's definitely a 58 and a 66 in the picture and I can't see any sign of one of Google's famous "joins" on the image.
