The credit scores themselves are a meaningless number, credit history however is important and worth checking periodically for any signs of fraud or identify theft. These adverts trying to get people to keep worrying about their credit scores. Do people really need to know it (unless they are going to make a big purchase on credit?)
What these adverts don't tell you of course is that there are a number of websites which allow to check a summary of your credit history completely free of charge, and if you ever need to see the full details you can request them from the main credit reference agencies for a small fee (a few pounds).
