The latest DestinationTrainsPlanes video features what looks to be 66653 converted waiting in Toton - it can be seen in the video at 0:41, the locomotive on the right with the Do Not Move sign.

Does anyone know what loco this originates from? The loco appears to have a nameplate, not sure if this has been retained from the loco it was converted from or if its new.

66652 was on the afternoon Knowsley bin train yesterday, 5th. There have been very occasional class 60s on that working, usually when the "long way round" Manchester via Northwich hasn't been available and it had to go via Victoria and up Miles Platting Bank. I'm wondering if it'll start getting rerouted that way if the 66/6s become regular traction? I assume there'll be quite a fuel saving going the "short way" but I haven't seen it go that way recently.

66651 has also been on the Knowsley binliner so maybe Class 66/6 will become regular traction on the service.

66651 covered new territory today, working the 6Z50 Margam-Portbury steel empties, presumably returning later.

This is a new short-term flow of imported steel slab that started last Monday. Initially they had a single 66 working but it didn’t get out of the dock on the first day and had to be rescued by another shed the following day. Subsequent workings (Weds-Fri) featured double-headed 66s, so makes some sense they’d stick a heavy haul version on it.

66651 still looked ex-works despite having been out and about for a few months now.

Great shot, thanks for posting. You're right, 651's paint looks like it's barely been used.

66651 has been on the Portbury steel run every weekday since it’s first appearance on the 24th June.

This week the working has been via Gloucester due to Severn Tunnel being closed for engineering work.

Not sure how much longer this short-term flow will last, currently on fourth week but paths seem to be added daily as STP workings rather than in weekly blocks so suspect it’s nearly done.

This has been discussed on the DB Class 60 withdrawal thread recently but DB have confirmed they are converting several of their Class 66 locos to have a higher tractive effort, allowing them to fully replace the Class 60s. With the tugs already seemingly withdrawn, DB have confirmed via a post on Facebook that the conversion work has started:
[link redirects to Facebook post by DB Cargo UK that refers to the work on regearing class 66s has begun in Toton]

I thought I'd create a new thread for this to track the locomotives being regeared and entered into service, as well as hopefully getting some technical info about the new tractive effort of these locomotives (IE if the locos are literally just gonna be same spec as Freightliner Class 66/6s which looks likely given the new numbers and 66/6 being written on the side of traction equipment in the DB Cargo UK video linked above).

The locomotives to be converted are (according to a previous post in the DB Class 60 withdrawal fleet):

This table hopefully can be used to track the conversions though of course loco numbers can be swapped out if locos earmarked for the conversion are changed.

Does anyone know which 66 became 655, which is now visible at Toton?

hello. I am a railroad fanatic living in Korea.

While studying mechanics in high school and junior college, I also watch railroad cars.

We have confirmed that some of the DB Cargo UK Class 66 locomotives have their numbers changed to 66651~66660.

For some of the content, I watched a video on the DB Cargo UK Facebook site.

I'm writing this here because I want to ask a question.

I would like to know the maximum speed limit for DB Cargo UK owned Class 66/6 locomotives.

I am writing this article because I want to know information because Wikipedia is not updated at all with the latest content.

I wrote it in Korean and translated it into English using Google Translator. Please understand.

There is already a thread on this subject, check out 'DB HTE Class 66s'

I checked the subject matter, but is it limited to 60 mph? Or is it 65 mph?

I translated it from English to Korean, but the content was confusing, so I wrote the article.

Wikipedia can be a pain while attempting to find information. I think DB Class 66/6 is geared for 65mph, that’s what Freightliner Class 66/6s have.

I had tried to find out which doors that accesses the engine room on both original and low-emissions variants, and nobody told me, but I know there is an additional side door to the engine room on the low-emissions Class 66.

But even if you look at other websites, you may still come across with the text from en.wikipedia.org. They’re trying to get everybody, but not everybody is a fan of Wikipedia.

65mph is written above the windscreen on the second man's side of the cab.

The loaded heavy axle laod triains they haul are limited to 60mph.

The external data panel also says 65mph.

Does anyone know if the regearing is using the same kit as the Freightliner 66/6 and maybe also the GBRf HTE class 66s ? In other words is it an EMD modification or "aftermarket solution" ?

Thanks

Very little is involved - the locos receive new TMs and axle pinion for the different gearing ratio, new speedos and an EM2000 software update

The end result of the Freightliner 66/6s is the same, except they had it off of the production line
