A pair of these turned up this afternoon for my usual train (1551 Liverpool to Norwich) instead of the 158’s which was a change - they still need refurbing inside just like the 158s, although they were people on the outside. Apologies, I didn’t get the numbers
504+514 with London Midland green interiors
Swapped for a 158 at Nottingham

As much as anything running around with declassified 1st class causes a reduction in much needed capacity

Not really. The first class section on a Turbostar has nine seats; the same section as standard class has only five more seats. Granted they'd be greatly appreciated on a packed train, but overall it isn't much of an improvement.

Didn't EMR dislike sending the 158s towards Skegness due to the rubbish luggage space available. At least a 170 has more room in the vestibule areas for oversized suitcases for when Auntie Doris brings her kitchen sink.
On paper a 158 had more seats available, so there was one summer where they were almost diagrammed on Skegs until there was a push back.

Suitcases in doorways isn't good when Auntie Doris goes for a crafty fag in the toilet and self immolates herself in her highly inflammable wolf fleece off Leicester market. The approach should be to demarcate certain seat pairs as luggage only and to keep doorways and aisles clear of obstructions.

Of course this year the approach will be somewhat different.

Did my farewell run last week between Uni - BHM. Might have to fit another one in next week if I have time.

Better than nothing eh? I'm going to try for mine on Wednesday, and combine it with some walking/cycling ideally. That much will depend on the weather really, in an ideal world I'd do a 170 to Birmingham for one last time but I'll see what the week brings :)

Rest In Peace, to Shrewsbury services with armrests :(
I absolutely hate not having armrests.

They do but it's different among 2 car and 3 car sets. The former have the same as other Turbostar first class, and the latter have large seats that Greater Anglia installed which match those on the late 317/7.
The first class seats are as new with Anglia Railways in 1999 for 3-cars (wider) and 2-cars in 2002 (not so good with recline select often broken). The 3-cars had the central section of first class seating in the 50 vehicle removed around the same time as the buffet by NXEA in 2004/5. Further work was done a few years after this to remove the guards compartment in the centre car thus providing more standard class seating.

Indeed, it was those 3 car 170s which donated some of the left over seats to the SWT 159/1 & 158 refurbishment.

Fabulous seats they were too. Better than many folks armchairs.
Are they similar to what was on the 317/6s? back to the 170/2 (and the ex hull trains 170/3 which were removed by Scotrail) - does anyone have the mix of seats they currently have? I thought they still had 1st class seats but declassified but reading above that isn’t the case.

First class was just left as on the 50 car of 3-car sets with around 8-9 seats at the cab end. They look very similar to the 317s but never had anything to do with them. After hiring in AR 170s & crews for a few years Hull Trains then purchased very similar units for themselves (& their own drivers/guards) with as you say, their 170s later transferring to SR as they were ousted by the Pioneer fleet.

Going by the data panels on 170203 seen on Thursday, there are just 7 first class seats, in the DMOCL coach. Said coach also has 36 standard class seats, with the entire unit having a total of 176 standard class seats.

Did take a picture, but sadly I can't seem to add it into my post, so hopefully my waffle makes sense ;)

Yes just 7 in the FC compartment. A bay of 2, a bay of 3, and two single seats. It's quite an odd use of space really.

Was originally 29 x 1st class seats split in to 7 and 22. The area with 22 1st class seats were converted to 36 x standard about 20 years ago leaving just the 7 x 1st class seats.
(The removed 1st class seats ended up in 159101-159108)

Scotrail's 170393-396 were also done but no idea if they are still the like it today.

==================================

Do EMR have all their 44 x170s yet?

I know 1 (421?) is staying with Southern until the end of the year but what about the 12 x 170/2 ex TfW and 23 x 170/5 ex WMR?

The WMT ones (501/505/506) are due in the next couple of weeks

The TFW ones (206/207/208) are due in the next couple of months, maybe earlier

The Southern one (421, currently 171201) isn’t transferring until at least December

After that then EMR will have the full compliment of 170s

Believe October/November has been mentioned for the TfW ones

Doesn't sound like the made the best use of space for a 3 car train. With combination of ample 1st class, buffets and guards compartments

Are you sure?

When new, Anglia's 170201-208 had both a buffet and a guards compartment in the centre car. The buffet and guards compartment was at one end of the centre car, along with 4 seats around a table. The buffet was smaller than the MMs bar that the 3 car MML 170101-110 had (and the Hull Trains 170393-396 had), with both the buffet and the guards compartment taking up the same space as the MMs bar.

The 3 car sets had 29 x 1st class seats, 127 std seats, buffet counter, guards compartment, and 2 wheelchair spaces.

I know that (though I’ll thank you for taking the time to explain that anyway) but the key point is in the first two words of your paragraph: When new. They don’t have a buffet and guard compartment anymore I’m pretty sure?
