Each set is therefore working 4 weeks out of every 5, assuming no faults, so 80% planned availability?
Kind of but different levels of exams take different lengths of time. Not sure the timescale of all of them or the way they go through each but there's different levels. That's heading out of my area of knowledge though that.

Planned availability would be (eventually) 5 sets from 7 so more like 71.5%.

So there's 7 sets that need an exam every 28 days and takes 7 days to do. Assuming only one exam is done at a time, that's never going to work and there will surely be a constant backlog?
Ideally, the exams would be four days apart. If they are done by calendar days, then once in the routine they would rotate through.

Yes that's the idea. The routine A, S and Z exams take less than that. Its only when the heavier exams occur ie now that there would be more than that

What’s the £10k single for?! And the GWR 5/10p upgrades?

1K/10K tickets are either test tickets, or ones they don’t want anyone to buy.

The 5p/10p upgrades will probably be complimentary upgrades, but they need a price so have a nominal value as rail ticket prices have to be a multiple of 5p.

Why are the 16:49s terminating at Crewe?
It was a 197 today, with “No first class or catering” displayed on the screen, though going all the way to Manchester.

Fantastic, cheers for that. Bit the bullet and booked a hotel in Holyhead for Wednesday - Fingers crossed heavily! Might have to try out the breakfast come Thursday morning.
Fingers crossed it all works now!

They're not! My mistake not sure why put Crewe for that one then copied across for second day. Have edited the post.

Looks accurate so far, obviously things can change overnight, unless TfW allocations are pretty good as soon as they're assigned?
You must work for TfW control

They should stick. With the way they work and what's due where each day they should be pretty accurate barring any on the day issues.
Not quite

The door chime as fitted by Virgin Trains EC is so unique and almost melodious, and I hope it isn’t lost in any future refurbishment. Look how disgusting the train is though. Especially alongside the 197s they work with.

Thanks for your help everyone, very impressed with the service. I was on 1W57 from Cardiff to Hereford. Weather the £15.50 upgrade is worth is debatable, but I'm glad I did it. I'll probably only do 1st Class again if I know I'd be on long enough for a full meal.20240130_115533.jpgVideoCapture_20240130-115739.jpg20240130_112048.jpgVideoCapture_20240130-121624.jpg

I’m going from Cardiff to Manchester on Monday lunchtime and back again on Thursday evening. Which trains are likely to be Mk4 sets? I’m currently guessing based on which services have First Class, but aren’t there also some 197s with First?

No. So anything planned for First is planned to be a MK4, but with only 50-75% chance it will be.

Currently you can pay to upgrade to Standard Premium aboard 197115, which is pretty much the same deal but no catering. 113/114/116+ haven’t been accepted yet, to everyone’s inconvenience.

A few changes to diagrams tomorrow but the Holyhead seems to have survived tomorrow night/Thursday morning now pencilled in for 67025+HD06.

10:52/12:49 Cardiff to Manchester and 14:30/16:30 Manchester to Cardiff would be the best to aim for. Not guaranteed but of all the booked work those are mostly the more reliable ones albeit not immune to being swapped.

It's still got no branding so is declassified until further notice.

They are scruffy, nobody can deny that for sure! Do wish some of the redundant stickers could be removed if nothing else. As far as I know They are planned for a repaint this year alongside some other improvement work.

Much appreciated, glad it's still down a hauled. I would assume HD01 still has a few niggles regarding the brakes then.
May be wrong but i think its been waiting on the exams on HD04 and HD06 to be finished to get access to the pit for inspections to take place underneath. Both of them are now released so hopefully HD01 shouldn't be far behind.

Glad it came and had a good trip. To be honest the First class upgrade fares do get better value the further you go.

When are we expecting HD03 back now it has got to Canton? and HD07 must be nearly done now surely
HD03 Is booked on the lathe tomorrow so isn't far off.

Unsure where HD07 is upto but it's fully formed as a 5 car and has a loco on it since yesterday so shouldn't be too far off service either.

After that HD05 is next. That's now at Crewe awaiting completion of HD07 and the arrival of its TO from Landore.

The Mk4 sets and locos seem to need a huge amount of technical attention and it seems never-ending with set upgrades and rebranding etc.
Would the same number of 5-car 197 sets need anything like the same level of technical support?
I should think the costs of LHCS operation far exceeds that of the unit equivalent.

So I assume this is correct, HD01 is now 5 car, HD03 is 5 car nearing re-entering service as is HD07 and HD05 is next to be extended, is there any idea on when HD02, HD04 and HD06 will have their 5th car added? And will there ever be a HD08 (is that the set down at Bristol?)
