so we are at Piccadilly for 1830 to carmarthen it's full and standing despite the fact there there is another 2 car behind that they want to split off as needed for the 1930
they can't split due an electrical issue

The next TFW arrival goes ecs to Crewe!!

There is diagrammed splits at Piccadilly, Weekdays/Saturdays for the 19:30/20:30 & 21:30/22:30 and on Sundays for the 18:30 & 19:30.

This is because *normally* the following arrival is a mk4 which runs to the depot for balancing the next days service. I am aware today it isn’t a mk4 behind, but the plan would stay the same.

Only time it doesn’t stay the same is where only one set runs up to Piccadilly, and obviously can’t split, in which case the empty stock gets cancelled and utilised for the next service.

Common sense would dictate an ontime departure and more space for passengers (who were left captured on the front unit whilst they tried to split!) And use the ecs for the 1930!!

At first glance yes, but if it didn’t split both 197s went to Cardiff on the 18:30, and the next 2x197s on the 19:30 to Cardiff instead of empty stock to Crewe, that would mean Crewe is left 2 units short for start of day tomorrow
