Finally confirmed order for the electric buses. This is only 49 buses in total zero emissions, so it is hardly half the fleet!

First Bus in Aberdeen has placed an order for 24 new electric vehicles to begin arriving in the city.

The firm expects the entire £8.1million fleet will be in operation by spring 2024.

Combined with the company’s double-decker hydrogen buses, it means 50% of First’s Aberdeen operation will be emission-free.

Ahead of their arrival, work will begin at the King Street depot to install rapid charging points, which is expected to take about 12 months.

The new buses, which will replace older diesel vehicles, will be supplied by manufacturer Yutong and will be able to travel about 230 miles on a single three-hour charge.

First says other benefits to passengers will be air conditioning and quieter journeys.

Duncan Cameron, managing director at First Bus Scotland, said: “We’re incredibly proud of the progress that we’ve made in Aberdeen and these new buses will make a significant impact to our mission to be emission-free by 2035.

What we hope will make an even more sizeable impact on emissions and air quality in Aberdeen is people’s decision to choose the bus.

“These state-of-the-art new EVs (electric vehicles) will offer a more pleasant journey to passengers, and we hope that they’ll encourage more in the city to leave their cars behind in favour of bus travel.

Ian Downie, Head of Yutong Sales UK, said: “With over 133,000 zero-emission vehicles in service, we are delighted that First Bus has chosen our tried, tested and proven product for operation in Aberdeen.”

The purchase was supported by Transport Scotland through its Scottish Zero Emission Bus Funding, which encourages the industry to switch to zero-emission vehicles and infrastructure."

I’m really glad First have opted for Yutongs - they really are the better product.

It’ll be interesting to see which route gets them.

69042 went back to Glasgow at the weekend without being used. The other 3 are still in use.

First Aberdeen are proposing to cancel 3 routes:-

Consultation
As we continue to emerge from the pandemic and adapt to changes in customer travel trends, we need to make sure that the network of services that we offer across Aberdeen, as well as the resources used to operate that network are deployed to where it’s needed the most and to areas that will allow us to take advantage of new opportunities and grow the business.
Having reviewed the services that we operate, we’re proposing to cease operation of the following services:
  • Service 8/8A: Dubford – Aberdeen Royal Infirmary
  • Service X27: City Centre – Aberdeen Airport/Dyce
  • Service 8 currently links Dubford with Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI) via the City Centre, while service 8A provides early morning trips to ARI, plus one afternoon trip back to Dubford.
Passenger demand for this service has remained low even before the effects of the pandemic took hold. It’s now clear that with recovery levels remaining below pre-pandemic levels, this route simply has no prospect of even covering its operating costs. We therefore propose to cease operation of the service with effect from 5th December.
Customers that presently use service 8/8A will still be able to complete their journeys using alternative services on the network as follows:
  • Service 1: Links Danestone with the City Centre
  • Service 1B: Links Dubford with the City Centre
  • Service 19: Links Tillydrone with the City Centre.
  • Services 3 / 23: Maintains links between City Centre and ARI.
  • Service X27 currently links the City Centre with Aberdeen Airport and Dyce.
This route relies heavily on strong footfall at Aberdeen Airport in order for the service to be viable.
Unfortunately, demand at the airport campus remains below pre-pandemic levels and it’s now become clear that service X27 isn’t a viable service to operate in the current climate.
We therefore propose to cease operation of this service with effect from 5th December.
Customers that presently use service X27 will still be able to travel between the city centre and Aberdeen Airport using Stagecoach service 727.
While First Aberdeen would no longer serve Aberdeen Airport or Kirkhill Industrial Estate, Dyce would continue to be served by routes 17/17A and 18 which also maintain links between the city centre and Great Northern Road.
Feedback from our customers is important to us as part of our plans to shape our bus network to better match changing travel patterns. If you’d like to comment on our proposals, please fill in the webform below so that we can give them our fullest consideration:

Is First Aberdeen the last company to rejig its operations due to the fact covid money is disappearing? I would be surprised if the council doesn't pay for the 8 or 8a to stay.

As I said all that time ago the X27 was a complete waste of fuel. Running it every 15 minutes with literally no customers was money down the drain.

It never made sense to me as an Aberdeen and Dyce resident. Either it was put in place to try and compete with Stagecoach or someone from Glasgow thought it would be a good idea. Or both.

The current iteration of the X27 never ran on a 15 minute frequency, that was the original July-November 2019 variant which is significantly different to the current route and was essentially just an extension of the 17B, it combined with the 17 to provide a 7/8 minute frequency against the 727. I agree that this variant of the X27 made no sense at all.

November 2019 saw the 18 rerouted back via Woodside as such a revised X27 was launched under an almost completely different route on a 20 minute frequency. The route made a lot of sense in theory but poor marketing and other minor factors combined with Covid killed any potential. The current service is hourly, off-peak the loads vary from empty to a handful of people, however the peaktimes runs often carry 25+ passengers.

The 8A isn't that well used since its somewhat of a niche service however the Bridge Of Don leg of the 8 is busy, its not uncommon for morning runs from Dubford to be on a standing load by the time they've got to Tillydrone. It's certainly much busier north of the river than the 1B.

In reality First are only doing these cuts so they can reallocate buses to run 1/2 duplicates. Its a classic First motive, any other operator would've increased the fleet size to meet demand requirements but instead every service change First make (and have made in the last decade or so) has to be cost neutral or a reduction.

A better option in my opinion would be to replace both the 1B and 8 with a new route operating Guild Street to Dubford via King Street, St Machar, Tillydrone, Danestone, Whitestripes, Scotstown and Demore half hourly. This would require 3 buses as per the current 1B, so you'd save the same number of buses as these proposals while maintaining most links. It would also maintain the same number of buses as present along King Street. Granted its not ideal but I'm sure most Dubford residents could accept a slightly slower service if it meant the vital links within Bridge Of Don were maintained. No one uses Bridge Of Don P&R and Stagecoach have a frequent enough service to the former AECC complex which is now used as a church.

It‘s a shame the X27 has failed. The idea behind it is good, it opens the airport to the west end of the city centre and other areas of the city along with being a good alternative to the 727 (which can be hellish if it’s busy and ends up stopping everywhere, I miss the old limited stop but that’s for a different thread). It also gave a public transport link to the western heliport, Kirkhill Industrial Estate and most importantly, linked the airport to Dyce Station. But as you say, the marketing has been abysmal to non existent.

I’m really not sure what they could do to recover it though.

As of today the entire long term First Aberdeen fleet is Euro 6 or better.

The last vehicle to be upgraded (11112) was completed today. Further to this both 38216 and 38224 are now in MOT prep so should be returning imminently.

The 10 Streetdecks still at Wrightbus have been delayed once again until next year due to capacity issues with the refueling site at Kittybewster.

That's a horrific waste of money. Surely the press should be all over this given the massive amount of publicity they got on release. If they fully belonged to First then fine but there's a lot of public money gone in to them.

Presumably First will not be paying for them when they are not using them as the hydrogen problem is not their fault.

First Aberdeen is to reinstate a limited service to Footdee from the 6th November.

First Aberdeen will return its bus services to the Fittie community next month on a trial basis, after all bus routes to the area were stopped earlier this year.
Fittie, or Footdee, was left completely cut off from the wider Aberdeen bus network in July when First Aberdeen made a number of sweeping changes.
The old Number 15 service used to drive along the Esplanade at the beach and past the toilets at the end of the promenade before stopping at York Street.
The Number 15 service used to go all the way to Fittie, but this stopped in July.
But ever since July, residents have been forced to walk more than half a mile to catch a bus outside the entrance to the Beach Boulevard Retail Park.
However, a new council report has revealed First intend to establish a six-month trial of reinstating services between Fittie and the rest of Aberdeen.

When will the bus services return to Fittie, and how will they work?

Starting from Sunday, November 6, First Bus will introduce up to four journeys a weekday on the Number 13 service in both directions between Fittie and the city centre.
First intends for this to be on a six-month trial basis, and the journeys will only be during the day.
There will also be slightly reduced services on Saturdays and Sundays compared to the Monday to Friday services.

Why is First making this change?

First Aberdeen told the council it has made the decision to reintroduce bus services to Fittie on a trial basis following meetings with Fittie residents, and a survey it conducted in the community to “better understand the travelling pattern” of those who live there.
Following the decision to cut the community off the bus network earlier this year, there was anger in the beachfront community, with petitions and community meetings organised to try and get services reinstated.
Fears were raised for pensioners living in Fittie who rely on the bus to get about, as well as children.

At the time, First Aberdeen said Fittie was removed from the Number 15‘s route because of “extremely low passenger volumes utilising that section of the previous 15 route”.

On average, only 10 passengers were using the old service a day before it was cancelled.
On October 20, councillors representing the George Street and Harbour ward provided their feedback to First regarding the frustrations of local residents.

A spokeswoman for First Aberdeen said they “continue to engage with the local community and key stakeholders on options to link Footdee into our bus network”.
She said that because discussions are ongoing, “it would be inappropriate to comment any further until the conclusion of this process”.

67086 is currently away for repaint, this will be the first Enviro200MMC in the fleet to be repainted in to the Aberdeen Urban livery.

The new Yutong E12s are expected to start arriving in February/March. A Hydrogen storage facility is also being installed at the depot which will allow the required capscity for the remaining Streetdeck Hydroliners to return. The arrival of the 24 Yutongs combined wirh the return of the 10 Streetdecks. Should see all B7RLEs in the fleet withdrawn fairly rapidly.

Thanks for the update. Any word on how the Fittie buses are doing? My worry as someone who used the 13 to get from the city centre to the sports Village is the increased journey times make the 13 even slower. It was already frustrating having to go to the retail park.

First Aberdeen are going to have a good little fleet going on up there. With the exception of the E500s and Citaros - looks like Aberdeen will completely oust the old First interiors (green grab poles).

Surely going to Sport Village you'd be much better using the 1, 1B or 2 as they stop much closer.

The revised 13 route is about 5 minutes slower, but I'd say its overall justified. I live on the route so use it regularly and the new route has proved very popular for Seaton/Hillhead residents going to the retail park. Buses in the evening also tend to be quite well loaded now thanks to the increase in frequency and improved connections, whereas before the changes you rarely saw more than 5-10 people on the evening run to Seaton. Of course, the changes have also allowed an improved frequency to the beach area along with an evening service - something the 15 lacked. The rerouting via Guild Street is also quite well used. The only change I'd really make is rerouting it between the Retail Park and Urquhart Road via the Beach Esplanade & Ballroom; this would take the same amount of time as the current route but cover more area and avoid the need to double back on Links Road, albeit it would require the Esplanade being reopened in both directions.

I personally don't get why they've bothered with the Footdee buses given demand is so low. A number of drivers I know were saying that under the old 15 they can't recall ever picking up or dropping off any residents at Footdee and certainly from my own observations I find that very believable; it was only ever the occasional tourists who could easily walk from the retail park anyway. First is running the service as a trial but I can't see it lasting beyond next summer.
Does that mean that the council facility at Kittybrewster will become a white elephant?
No, the storage facility at King Street is only so they have the capacity for the 10 additional buses, some buses will still go to Kittybrewster for refueling just not all 25. Keep in mind that the Council also runs its own fleet of vehicles which refuel at the same site.

Indeed, although the E500s internally are in much better condition than the E300s and some Streetlites. All the E500s really need is a deep clean and retrim, whereas the E300s could additionally do with new flooring.

The depot facility will only be a temporary measure with tankers delivering the hydrogen until the new "green" hydrogen will be available and I imagine that may mean all buses are fuelled at Kittybrewster again, or wherever there is a new facility on Aberdeen. Kittybrewster cannot produce enough hydrogen for the 10 additional buses but will continue to service the original 15 buses. I do not know how far the tankers are coming with the hydrogen.

As you say the 13 goes via Guild Street so was easier to reach from the railway station. It would depend on timings, but I'm no longer in Aberdeen anyway. Good to hear it is popular. I think I only used the 15 once as if I was going to Codona's or the beach from Old Aberdeen the low frequency meant it was usually quicker to walk than to connect on to it.

Likewise if I was in town I'd often just walk, although where I live Codonas is only a 5 minute walk away anyway. The issue with the 15 was that it's demand varied depending on time of year and weather so while some days the 30 minute frequency was too infrequent, most of the year any higher of a frequency wasn't viable. The same goes with the lack of evening service, at times there would've been demand but most of the year there isn't.

The 13 gets around both those issues, the 13 of course also offers far better connections with it serving Summerhill, Mastrick, Northfield, Heathryfold and Middlefield while as noted the link between the Retail Park and Seaton has proven popular, in contrast I highly doubt Betty, Doris and Mavis from Craigiebuckler would ever want to go to Codonas!

It is double deckers that Aberdeen are needing, with more seated capacity than the Streetdecks.

Are they transfers? 33205 has just been repainted back into the Glasgow purple livery from its time at First Midland before it was taken over by McGill’s and transferred back.
Likely just on loan, Aberdeen has had a really bad vehicle shortage lately. The other morning there were 8 drivers at the depot all without any buses to take out.

Streetlite 63209 is now away for repaint.
