Two wins in 48 hours, and the last 4 games unbeaten saw Grantham Town safe from relegation. A great turn around despite languishing at the bottom.of the NPL East for most of the season. The last game of the season is now a formality, though it could see hosts Winterton Rangers relegated.
The unprecedented number of howlers made by top flight goalkeepers in recent weeks is beginning to make me worry whether something sinister is going on.
In season 1962/63, Bristol Rovers goalie Esmond Million took a £300 bribe to throw their D3 match at Bradford and was subsequently banned for life. Despite his efforts, or lack of them, Bradford could only manage a 2-2 draw. Bristol Rovers finished the season a point above Bradford and thus Bradford were relegated, never to return, while Rovers stayed up. If only he had done what he was paid for!
Rovers eventually stayed up after coming back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Halifax, long after Bradford's season had finished. The season had been extended due to fixture pile ups after a severe winter. Conspiracy theorists said bottom club Halifax threw the game to take Bradford down with them to ensure lucrative local derbies in D4.
I always thought there was something dodgy about the team from the wrong side of the city.... And the fact that you couldn't even bribe your way to safety, well...
Up the Chickens!! Talking of which for reasons I'm yet to understand out awful season has still seen us on the threshold of the play-offs. So we need to win, Barrow to lose against Mansfield and Crawley draw or lose to Grimsby. And our opponents, Newport County, who have lost their last 6 scoring only 3 and conceding 13. So I know what's going to happen here...
Town as good as down now, with the only thing keeping the R from next to our name being the unlikely possibility of a 15-goal swing over Plymouth next week.
Can't say it hasn't been coming. Bit of a clear out needed over the summer. One bit of silver lining is that there's a good chance today's opponents Birmingham will be joining us in the Football League Trophy next season.

The Wayne Rooney spell in charge of Birmingham is really coming back to haunt them now. Will be even more galling for Birmingham fans as Aston Villa will be in Europe next season.
What has affected Huddersfield is the run of form that Sheffield Wednesday have had since Danny Rohl took charge, if they had stuck with Xisco then they would already be relegated.
Sheffield United have been relegated from the Premier League after losing 5-1 away at Newcastle.

What's affected Huddersfield is the clueless idiots that our American owner has appointed to run the club. First they dispensed with Neil Warnock, who had managed an unexpected escape last season and looked set to bring a comfortable mid-table finish.
Secondly, they chose to replace Warnock with the personality-vacuum that of Darren "part & partial" Moore- who to be fair had a decent-ish record up until joining us. Under Moore we won just 3 games out of 23, before the experiment was ended. Moore then went to Port Vale and failed to keep them in League One, so technically has two relegations in one season on his CV.
Other than the brief revival under caretaker Jon Worthington, the post-Moore era hasn't gone at all well, sadly. Andre Breitenreiter has a decent record too, but we've seen only two wins since he took over- so it's fair to ask whether the problem is the players. Some of them are clearly talented, but we haven't really looked like a team since the play-off final two years ago.
A clear-out will definitely be needed in the summer. Sorba Thomas and Jack Rudoni will likely attract bids from the Championship, but otherwise we'll be left with a lot of dead wood.

It is always noticeable that with two or three games until the end of a season, some supporters tend to play the "what if" results speculation game, then after one match, the majority of such speculation "goes up in smoke" as results reality bring matters more in line with actual reality.
Premier League clubs have voted to introduce a spending cap from the 2025/26 season. Teams will only be able to spend a maximum of 70-85% of their revenue. Manchester City, Manchester United & Aston Villa voted against whilst Chelsea abstained.
This replaces the Profit & Sustainability rules currently in place.
Leicester City have been crowned champions of the Championship after beating Preston 3-0 at Deepdale.
I'm sure the already de-facto relegated, and utterly hopeless Terriers will put up a good fight... we're always happy to help out our friendly neighbours from down the A62!

Yes, nobody really has any momentum going into the playoffs. Leeds V Southampton on the last day of the season ought to be an U21’s match if the managers have any sense. Norwich may wish to go all out still to avoid Leeds in the first round, as they’ve taken 6pts off Norwich this season and have the Farke-effect. I imagine West Brom would fancy themselves against Leeds. If Hull sneak in, they would also be well up for it against Leeds.
Unfortunately, I have little confidence in Farke motivationally or tactically, so I can’t see us being successful.
Aston Villa 2 Olympiakos 4. A bad result for Villa in the Europa Conference, although better news from the Premiership with Chelsea beating Spurs 2-0. It now looks like one win from their last 3 games will clinch 4th spot for Villa!

Happy to see Ipswich get promoted to the Premier League today, getting the win with a 2-0 victory over Huddersfield ensuring their relegation which was all but confirmed anyway. McKenna has done a phenomenal job since taking the reins. As it turned out, Leeds lost to Southampton so Ipswich would have gone up regardless.
West Brom and Norwich join Leeds and Southampton in the playoffs
Birmingham relegated despite their 1-0 victory against Norwich as Plymouth and Sheffield Wednesday also won, wonder what John Eustace must be thinking.
Sheffield Wednesday survive despite not managing to win a game until the end of October, even the first point took 5 games! Spent 8 months in the relegation zone, but escaped at the right time. Makes you think how well they would've done without that utterly disastrous start.
