So it seems none of the applicants were deemed suitable, and Howe could well be the ultimate target?
I think so yes, but he's obviously not currently available but a big compensation offer from the FA could quickly change all that and let Newcastle do what they probably always planned by bringing in a top European coach to take them to the next step.

Or it's just a case of needing an interim appointment rather than a rushed appointment. Buying time, in effect, to find or get the right man (or woman, but that seems unlikely).

Spain players Rodri & Alvaro Morata have been banned for one international match for the chanting that Gibraltar is part of Spain.

Very excited for the start of the EFL season today. My team Birmingham City have a lot of optimism around the club despite the relegation last year. The stadium has had £15m spent on it enhancing all kinds of supporter experiences and a massive plot of land has been purchased for a new large stadium and 'sports quarter' just a stones throw away. The future looks bright despite now playing in the third division for the first time in 30 years.

I personally have moved my season ticket to the new standing section behind the goal and I'm currently like a kid on Christmas Eve. I'm also in the top priority bracket for away matches so I shouldn't miss a game this year, ticking off a load of new grounds in the process. Hopefully I see a winning season for the first time in a long while.

Out of interest, which end is that?

Relegation can have its upsides!

The Tilton Road End. The whole bottom tier is now safe standing. Went in there for a cup game last season to try it out and loved it. Felt really involved in the game because the stands are quite close to the pitch.

I have optimism at the beginning of every season. Unfortunately after a couple of games it turns to pessimism :frown:

So it seems none of the applicants were deemed suitable…..
Those that applied weren’t suitable. Those that didn’t apply but were suitable obviously don’t want it.
So once again we’ll be down at the Mike Bassett level.

I’m pretty sure that apart from the street cred (and that’s dubious) of being a national team manager, most if not all managers would rather manage a top league team rather than a national team.

I'm very much an armchair supporter these days but even I can feel the vibe. I'm impressed with the commitment shown by the new owners.

As a Scunthorpe United supporter, can someone explain what optimism is please?

As an FC Halifax Town fan, I share your bewilderment at this optimism thing

We've struggled all pre-season

We've barely scored any goals

Our number 9 is someone who was jokingly described as "self-identifying as a footballer"

We're playing the promotion favourites tomorrow

The ref is the one who (accidentally) hit one of our players in the face whilst indicating a throw-in, and then sent the player off for reacting by catching the ref as he brought his hands up to his face

Whereas I am excited but also nervous, fearing that my club, Oxford United, will struggle, not having anywhere near the resources of the big city outfits. OTOH perhaps there will be a return to the glory days of 1984-6, when we won the old Third and Second Division titles in consecutive seasons (still a rare feat) and then the League Cup. At the start of the season anything is possible!

Northern Premier League...Premier Division

Hyde United 1 ... Mickleover 1

Poor start to the season for Hyde who seem to make a habit of dropping points at home in early-season matches they were leading. Hyde took the lead in the 21st minute, but conceded an equaliser mid-way through the second half.

We (Stockton Town) scored in the tenth minute so went top temporarily for about 4 minutes. Ended up beating Leek Town 2 - 0 so are currently sitting 2nd in our league, equal in points & goal difference but we are 2nd due to alphabetical ordering with Guiseley, who we play at our ground on Wednesday. If the opening games are anything to go by, it should be an interesting season.

Man United have agreed a fee of £37 million for Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt, who played under ten Hag in that famous Ajax team of 2018-19. Good signing?
The need was made more urgent by the injury sustained by their new young central defender they had recently signed in one of those overseas pre-season friendly matches. de Ligt is an experienced player who has played in high quality European football leagues.

I was at Chelsea yesterday & although it was a pre season friendly v Inter Milan it was played at a decent pace.

My point though although Chelsea are not the force they were by any stretch the way Inter put their forward passing together was a pleasure to watch with some amazing one touch, one-twos & flicks that all seemed to come off, they didn’t seem to come out of second gear either.

It will be interesting to see how Chelsea cope v Man City next weekend in their opening game as they could be embarrassed but I hope it’s not the case.

I suppose though my club can always buy another 10 or 11 players this week to go out on loan or train with the under 21s, jeez :s

Well, after one game of the season (a 0-2 home defeat) Preston North End have sacked manager Ryan Lowe.

Apparently he decided to leave rather then be sacked. Either way an odd situation.

Meanwhile, paid Thornton Cleveleys FC a visit on Saturday, they are in NWCL 2; or step 6 level 10; a new entrant. Nice ground, superb facilities, but only 2 sides open which I thought wasn't allowed? gate of over 100 saw a 3 - 1 defeat by Daisy Hill, after being one-up and then one sent off. There appear to be a lot of clubs at level 10 or higher on the Fylde, I counted five, yet nothing at Lytham St Annes. Is this sustainable?

The ground grading for step 6 has to be met by newly promoted clubs in March (I think it is) of their first season at that level. So, they can be promoted with a lower standard and given time to make the improvements.

Thanks, that makes sense. Ironically Gigg was used using only 2 sides, three if they felt the crowd large enough to warrant it!

I don't know a lot about ground grading* but I suspect that a requirement to have four sides doesn't mean you have to use them.

Watched Dover Athletic beat Potters Bar 8-0 (played at Kings Langley, avoiding the ECML chaos). Probably the high point of the season already :)
