After my long pre season break football is back.

Darlington 1 v Kidderminster 2

Played well against a fancied team. Darlo were denied a quite obvious penalty. Shame to start with a defeat but looks like we played well enough to get a point. Lots of positives and i feel a lot better about this season with a decent manager and some sensible signings as opposed to the chaos of last season.

Luton Town 1 ... Burnley 4

The Championship returnees Monday night match saw Burnley with a 2-0 half-time lead and were well worthy of this away win.
A poor performance by Luton, and we can't have any complaints. Started with three teenagers in the side, and missing an entire first choice central defence and centre midfield through injuries. We need some players getting back to fitness and some some experience bringing into the side quickly or this could be a very disappointing season.

FC Halifax Town 2-1 Barnet

Halifax came into the game having won only 2 out of 9 pre-season games, all against lower league teams (plus Huddersfield and Barnsley development squads). Barnet on the other hand had a strong pre-season, beat some league teams, and were the favourites for the title

Football eh?

We played pretty well, scored a couple of decent goals, and stifled Barnet, whose manager really is a bit of an idiot

Does that say that the close season is not long enough to allow the healing of injuries from the end of one season to the start of the next season?
No, it says that some injuries take a long time to get over. It also says we've been unlucky with the number and severity of injuries and the concentration of them over a couple of areas of the team.

The Manchester United manager made a similar statement near to the end of last season.

Northern Premier League...Premier Division

Bamber Bridge 1 ... Hyde United 2

After Hyde's saturday's disappointing draw at home to open the new season, the matches against Bamber Bridge either home or away are always difficult for Hyde. Bamber Bridge opened the scoring after 20 minutes, which remained the score at half-time. Hyde fared much better in the second half and scored in the 65th and the 81st minute to register their first (and hopefully a precursor of many) win of the season.

1st Dover Athletic league game v Folkestone in nearly 20 years last night and with our woeful record against Kent teams in recent years we duly lost 3-2.

Entertaining game in front of a 2500 crowd, although marred by a referee who was out of his depth.

Also our most local derby in August? What were the Isthmian League thinking? The return is Guy Fowkes night

I think the Isthmian League have really lost the plot, my team - Bognor were at home to Lewes last night, away to Hastings on Saturday and away to walking distance rivals Chichester on Bank Holiday Monday. 3 Sussex derbies in their first 5 games!

Seems sensible to me! Good early season crowds and good early season money in the bank for harder times over winter.

My club, Darlington, travel to Oxford City on Saturday in the national League NORTH ( which is great for me as it is home in time for tea league game but not great for a fan funded club having to travel so far)

There seems to be so many southern-based leams these days, that thought could be given to having the National League North and the National League Midlands in addition to the National League South, with the champions of three leagues only being promoted to the National League.

The Northern Premier League has its Premier Division (where my affiliated team Hyde United play) then a number of geographical lower visions under it.

It's a possibility, but the trade-off you're asking the NLN / NLS chairmen to weight up is reduced travelling costs and possibly bigger average crowds versus half the opportunity for promotion. I think most would rather have two promotion places

Last night Stockton Town beat joint top of league Guiseley 3-1 last night. A cracking game of football. We were 2-0 at half time. Owen Gallacher was sent off in the 86 minute after being given a 2nd yellow card for what was a bit of a cruncher of a tackle. Guiseley pulled one back in the 90th minute.

A good result - Guiseley have brought in a lot of new players and must be favourites for promotion. They have Jake Lawlor and Adriano Moke who both played for Darlo in NLN last season. Mark Bower has a good reputation and has done well at this level and NLN.

Nice to see several former Darlo players turning out for Stockton including Stephen Thompson who was a big part of our journey up the leagues.

We had Moke at Halifax in about 2012, you could tell there was a player in there but he didn’t have much end product.

Bower played for us 2010/11 and did a great job under minimal pressure as we cruised through the higher of the glue leagues

It was a good game - i predicted a 3-3 draw before kickoff. Thommo scored a penalty for us last night, but Guiseley did have a few good chances. I know it's very early days in the season but it looks like it's going to be quite a closely contested season & we play Macclesfield later in the season which I expect to be a tough game.

When I used to watch Solihull in the NLN I used to argue for those divisions to be split by east & west rather than north & south.

My argument being that its much easier to travel up and down this country than it is across it. Yes, distances may be longer but I'd tentatively bet that average travel time to all of the away games would be lower.

A good description. A good guy by all accounts and a good dressing room presence but not quite on it. was great at keeping the ball moving when we were top of the league but a passenger when we needed fight and grit in the middle of the park.

Good to hear. Lovely player and you wonder why he never made it as a pro

They will be challengers. Failing to get promoted last season was NOT part of thier plan!

Hoping Stockton go well. A nice club.

Your next game is home to another team who was promoted to the Northern Premier League...Premier Division at the end of last season. Prescot Cables FC who came up from Division One West.

Their first match ended goal-less against Matlock Town at home and the mid-week match saw them lose 0-1 away at Macclesfield.

From the BBC:

BBC Sport increases its football offering for the new season’

I initially thought this meant they’d be showing more football, but no, it appears they’ll be talking more football.

Yeah, but they seem to have binned the insufferable Garth Crooks and his daft team of the week thing so it’s not all bad

But they’ve replaced him with Troy Deeney, so maybe not
