One is forced to ask why, after signing a four and a half year contract only in this January, why the 25 year old Aston Villa captain Fabian Delph has suddenly considered an option of a move to Manchester City.

Surely, now that the club's Premiership status has been secured for this coming season he could have given a captain's lead example for the coming season at Villa Park

£££ seems the most obvious. I can't see Delph being much more than a bench warmer similar to Milner although European football is a thing - he's never going to get it with us.

Man City have been predatory since their new owners came in. Such is football

Man City need more English players to meet required squad quotas, especially with at least 2 of last seasons registered English players having moved on during the transfer window,

Bastian Schweinsteiger, at the age of 30, still will be able to bring more experience into the Manchester United midfield play, should the current matter progress to a transfer from Bayern Munich, a club with whom he has spent very many years.

Incidentally, can any FIFA or UEFA ruling take preference over an EC of freedom of labour movement law between member states?

European and any national and state laws override Fifa rules. Employment law also overrides any Fifa rule on transfers etc.

Didn't the Bosman ruling set a precedent in that regard?

Meanwhile Sky are tweeting that Delph will be staying at Villa

I wonder if Fabian Delph has had a long meaningful discussion about the loyalty expected of a first team captain with forum member STKKK46?

Being an old-timer (70) who may not have fully understood matters correctly in the past, have any football authority made any new stipulations about players in the teams that participate in both the Champions League and the Europa League in coming seasons....and if so, what has been the responses made to such?

The squads I believe for European competition have to have x number of players home grown (at club 2 or 3 years under age of 19) and y number of players of the nationality of the club. X and y and small numbers from memory.

Thanks for this information, which is the one that I could not recall and wonder if this stipulation that you so describe would still be against the laws of the EC.

Is the supposed Manchester United signing of the 25 year-old Torino defender Matteo Darmian one method of replacing a South American defender by one from the EC.

Is the twin full-back "perm" from Brazil with very poor timing as a defender still on their books?

I am more curious to just how much of this was embellished by the media and/or twitter. I had some time to think about it and IIRC Delph himself said nothing on the subject - it was the press who said he was moving and then that he wasn't. Not to mention they certainly have form for being misleading

From just picking my champions league squad on football manager:

4 home-grown players at club (3 years trained at club between 15 and 21)
4 home-grown players in country (3 years trained at a club in the country between 15 and 21).

In terms of unlimited under-21 players (or is it 20?), it used to be that they could be of any nationality and home-grown status (so your 18 year-old Brazilian who has just got off the plane can go straight in) but they now also have to have spent a certain amount of time at the club.

Yes - although LVG doesn't appear to rate him and he slipped to 2nd choice behind Valencia.

On football manager 2015, under 21s don't need to be registered for league or Europe and no limit on them playing. I assume this reflects reality?

I'm also on FM15 - I was hoping to use a young player that I had just signed from Japan in the Europa league, but as he had not spent enough time in the nation, I was unable to use him as one of the unlimited u-21 players.

Only way I could have used him was if I had registered him, like any other player.

It might be European born under 21s that don't need registering. All of mine are European born,

That certainly sounds plausible. Unfortunately I prefer to get free agents in from the states

I find it laughable that "Homegrown player" rules are totally defeating the object of the exercise. Namely improving the National team.
All it actually means is that teams like Man Citeh buy English players, like Delph, wether they need them or not just to fill a quota. Then play them sparingly and they rot on the bench instead of playing week in and week out for a club lower down the pecking order.
Delph is much better off, from a footballing point of view, where is is instead of playing a handful of games a season for an oil billionaires plaything

Nah, seeing if Andy Carroll is still available if our previous transfer history is anything to go by.

To be fair you have properly pulled Citeh's pants down with that fee. 12th biggest transfer fee of all time apparently. For a player who has scored 18 goals!!
A fool and their money are easily parted

Totally agree. Just have to wait and see what we spend it on though. Great bit of business. I would have taken 30.

49 million is a lot of money for a very promising player. If he was at the peak of his career and the real deal then fair enough. But 49 million is a lot for a (very) hot prospect.

What you need to do with ~50 million now is get in 2 or 3 top quality players. Not 5x Joe Allen / Sakho / Aspas etc

He might be promising but he isn't a £49m player, Liverpool must be praying he doesn't fail the medical.

Talented or not. He has shown to be way short of the mark attitude wise. It remains to be seen if that was him or his agent but he could have played this move a whole lot better.
Personally speaking I don't think £49million is anything like his true value as things stand
