Perhaps they could even invent a pulling machine which can run in either direction without needing to be turned around? Not to get too far into the realms of fantasy, of course. They could even take advantage of off-the-shelf components and put a great big minehunter engine in it
Yes, perhaps put one at each end. That way there is no need to either turn round or run round, but less freedom to add/remove the carts for self-loading freight.
