There are 7 x 3 Car and 11 x 2 Car. 3 x 3 Car are used on Barnstaples and 3 on other work such as Brightons although Turbos are in the process of taking over there having been cleared. They also have work between Cardiff and Taunton. At the moment it is difficult to confirm this from the May Timetable due COVID alterations..
Empty coaching stock to Brighton next week for route retention reasons

Service resumes in July

158763 remains on lease for now but is damaged beyond repair being used as a source of spares.

There’s also likely to be a slight change in the blend of 2 and 3 car make up of the fleet for the Summer timetable.

Thanks for the update. It will be useful to see how many three car units will be operated by GWR this year.

I'm also interested if any of the Angel 158s (e.g. Northern) been reformed since 2020? Either in two or three car formation.

158763 is not on lease. Both the damaged Salisbury units were off-leased and de-registered last year. Both units have been written off.

Do you know if this reforming, presumably increasing the amount of 2 cars, is what was meant in the recent parliamentary debate when it was said GWR had sourced rolling stock to increase Yate services from May 2023, or are there further changes planned?

Obviously both are near life expired, annoying as 763 was one of the better 158's in the fleet!
I had a ride on it from Newton Abbot to Paignton when it was the only one left with a FGW interior, and it was one of the most comfortable journeys I’ve ever had under Great Western Railway, and I say that having been on every unit in their fleet (bar 150202)

I was under the impression that both had already gone?
Going I think is the operative word, some vehicles have already gone while at least 1 from 763 remained at Stoke last week - Reids yard must be looking a little emptier with both the 158 (scrap) and Thumper 1305 (Bluebell) departed over the last week!

Shame really, but 763 was totally trashed to be honest. The photos from the crash site don't really convey the damage sustained.

Not sure if this has been discussed elsewhere but it would appear that 158956 and 957 have both been disbanded into 158748, 158768 and 158771.

I assume this is a following Mondays TT change.

Can be found on RTT:

It’s been discussed, but buried away in the thread that’s theoretically about 165/166 diagrams. Of course it’s ended up as a sort of generalised discussion about numerous GWR DMU topics

Ah figured that might be the case. I knew something like this probably wouldn’t have gone unnoticed!

Does anyone know where the GWR 158s are now allocated? Exeter have some and Bristol the rest?

Weren’t the 158s always Bristol units officially?

I think a more accurate question would be how many diagrams start out of the Exeter area each day

I've seen several sets wearing Exeter TMD stickers on the inner ends - whether that's an official allocation or not I don't know.

AIUI 2 diagrams start from Exeter (I believe 2 3 cars), on 5C04 splitting at Exeter St David’s to form 2B04 to Barnstaple and 2C04 to Penzance.

3 of the 3 car diagrams and 1 of the 2 car diagrams start from Exeter each day. On paper the 3 car sets are allocated to Exeter and the 2 car sets at Bristol.

That’s interesting, I didn’t know they had officially transferred the 3 car units to Exeter

Exeter TMD on the inside of 798 sticker if anyone’s interested. Turbos carry a mixture of SPM and Reading, though SPM now outweighs Reading.

What is the 2 car diagram? As I understand it the three Tarka diagrams are all 3 car 158s - 2 start from Exeter Depot and the third from Bristol (05:25 TM). Then there is 2C04 06:25 EXD to Penzance. A 2 car 158 often pops up on any Exeter diagram when there is a shortage of other units.

It works the early Taunton to Bristol which runs ECS from Exeter.

Now that only 5 3-158s remain, I’m guessing they’re only booked for the Tarka now, which is 3 diagrams (alongside an evening 150 that moves from Okehamptons to cover the Axminster-bound 158) with 2 spare/for maintenance?

Note I said booked, as I’m well aware they’re often slipping on the last 158 Penzance diagram and the Portsmouth services.
