I don't see how it could not be legal, it's just heated up liquid nicotine being inhaled mixed with water vapor. There's no smoke or fire or anything like that.

Thanks,

Can anyone confirm if you get a "hit" off these - smokers will understand what I mean :p

One friend has one, although it didn't last long. You get the kick but he ran out of the vapour stuff and it was easier to go to the corner shop to buy fags

During the standard 'teenage starting to go out' stage I used to like Drum (the stuff in the blue packet) rolled with blue rizla. Never got too in to it though because as much as I enjoyed and like smoking I enjoy my health more! [/patronising]

Although that makes me sound old and I'm only 22. :D

Speaking as a smoker you've made a sensible decision - if they found a cure for all it's associated ailments (unlikely) would you start again ?:p

I don't really class myself as an ex-smoker to be honest because I never smoked regulaly.

If I could guarantee no future health problems or ill effects I'd probably smoke when I was out on the ale.

Having recently returned from Luxembourg I can understand why people make a lot of money smuggling hand rolling tobacco.

In a normal shop (not duty free) 50g of Golden Virginia was less than £5 a pouch - it is nearly £15 in the UK.

I got a ten pack for my friend who smokes it and just charged him what it cost me (under £50)

He was so shocked as he normally pays a lot more (the margin)

I did notice on the way back at Heathrow that the duty free price there was the same as I paid in a normal shop in Luxembourg .

The big difference is you can import as much as you like for personal use if you have paid the duty by purchasing the tobacco in an EU outlet.

I don't know if it still available, but my mother used to roll her own with "Digger Shag" which was too strong for the hardened smokers at university.
It killed her

Digger, if I remember rightly, is, or was, made by Players. Generally sold as Digger Flake, but used to be available as Rough Cut, Digger Shag and Digger Cut Plug, which is what I used to smoke. (in a pipe)

I tend to smoke Amber Leaf, I don't usually smoke pre rolled cigs (refered to a Taylors (as in taylor made) or Straights round my way) as for me it far too expensive, to put it into perspective you can end up paying over a fiver for 20 straights or I can pay £3.49 for 12.5g of AL and roll 30 or 40 out of it, its a no brainer really.
As for the OP's question: have you tried Blue Ridge? If memory serves its available from the Co-Op, and its priced at around £6 or £7 for 50g. Or as suggested try your local tobbaconist, once got a tobbaco called Railwaymans choice, first roll up nearly blew my head off never had a nicotine rush like it before or since, but its getting difficult to get hold of now, thinking about it it might have been pipe tobacco.

I smoked until fairly recently. Started on B&H, moved onto Marlboro, then went onto Drum roll ups for several years. Ended up on Golden Virginia. I used to tell myself I liked smoking and used that as a reason to do it for so long. I stopped because I became more and more aware of the damage it was doing to my health. I wouldn't condemn anyone for smoking and I wouldn't suggest it's easy to stop. I'd even consider starting again if they found a cure for all the smoking related illnesses.

Can anyone recommend a "strong " variety of the above.

I normally smoke Benson and Hedges Gold King Size Cigarettes or Rothmans King Size (Blue and White).

I have tried Old Holborn , Golden Virginia , Drum and even B&H's own hand rolling baccy.

None of them are anywhere near as strong as either of the above "proper cigarettes".

When I say strong I mean the "kick" they give your lungs on inhaling.

Is this lack of "kick" a feature of roll ups :p

Try drying the tobacco out.
You will soon get a "kick"
I normally somke Spanish fags, Fortunas Red, these somkes give me the same kick as when i smoked the baccy, Old Holburn/ Drum :D

I'd say speak to a tabaconist if you want to actually roll a nice kick into one, of course doing prison rolls doesn't help, but some of us can manage to roll different sizes without issue, is always a laugh just before loan time watching students trying to learn how to roll and then I just do it for them (even 4 years after I last rolled up)

Blimey this is a blast from the past.....

I actually prefer Benson and Hedges Gold manufactured in the UK by JTI now -formerly Gallahers.

You know the strength of these has gradually been eroded from 1.4/1.1 to 1.0/0.9.

Yeah, I normally stuck with drum but dried it out next to the fire for a night before using it, would break the seal, floof it up and then dry about 40% of the moisture out and it came out much nicer, was a bit of a bitch to roll but I could still manage it easilly...

At least I never got 10 lambert and a packet of king size silver rizzlas... (You'd be amased how popular these are, then they come back with munchies later)

When I was in Luxembourg recently - a suprising hotspot for cheap duty paid hand rolling tobacco and cigarettes, I went into a Tabac that had an enormous variety of HRT, brands I'd never heard of and some almost "oil drum" size containers of the product.

You could even smoke in there - well strangely the middle was non-smoking and the outer tables smoking - a token gesture if there ever was one

I bought some Golden Virginia for my friend - less than £5 pouch - nearly £15 here. Also I got 2000 Bensons at less than £4 packet. Both these were duty paid (the packets are stamped). My trip thus cost me nothing with the savings I made.

Customs can get funny but not so much at airports its more the transit van brigade at Dover that get pulled.

If you are flying to Edinburgh via LHR as I was you don't see your case in London it is checked straight through to Edinburgh. You clear UK Customs in London and pick your booty up in Edinburgh.:p

If I'd had a bigger case I would have bought 10000 - for personal consumption. 500 packets at £3 = £1500 saving. That would last me a year and a bit.

I thought they were used for "herbal cigarettes" ;)

I think they usually are, but no reason you couldn't use them!

When I went over to Rothesay last year I went into the Co-op and asked for a packet of red Rizzla, the lady behind the till quite happily handed me a pack of king sized ones as if if it wasn't in the slightest bit suspecious, whilst feeling somewhat embarsed I explaind I wanted a pack of the smaller ones. It turned out they don't sell small red ones.

I supose there isn't lot else to do on the Isle of Bute.

Has anyone tried those electronic cigarettes - do you get "a hit " off them on inhaling ?:p

Yes, you definitely get a hit. I've been very impressed with my recent purchase of my e-cig.

I was a little sceptical at first, but when my heavy smoking friend told me she'd quit her normal cigarettes for an e-cig I thought I'd give it a try too.

I've smoked for 30 years and I was a 30-40 a day hand roller and I'm now into my third week of 'vaping' (the term used for 'smoking' an e-cig) and haven't craved or needed a normal cigarette since. I can't believe how easy it was to put the roll-ups down.

My starter kit wasn't cheap at £59 but it paid for itself in 2 weeks. I would normally spend £104 a month on rolling tobacco, but now my only cost for topping my e-cig up with e-fluid is £20 a month.

I certainly don't miss my roll-ups and the smell. Plus the real benefit of vaping is that I'm not inhaling all the poisonous toxins etc associated with the burning of tobacco.

I've not tried vaping on a train yet but I've used my e-cig in places where cigarette smoking is banned. I wouldn't overly advertise the fact that I'm smoking and tend to have a sly drag. Hopefully it'll become more acceptable soon and I'll be able to freely use my e-cig without feeling guilty.

I'd certainly recommend every smoker at least tries an e-cig once. Give them a chance and you might be surprised, just as I was.

Perhaps they should provide them on Prescription :p

You can get some stop smoking stuff on prescription (patches, gum, that stupid inhaler thing) but you have to satisfy the addiction criteria to get them. I'm on 20-25 rollies a day and apparently I'm not addicted enough.

As an aside has anyone ever been approached by these stop smoking campaigners?
Had one a while back that accosted me on the street, me fag in hand, and said "did you know that 80% of smokers die?" I said "Well thats and interesting fact, did you know that 100% of non smokers die?" and walked off.
I'm evil when I'm in a cheeky mood <D .

Great news another Airport can be added to the list to enjoy your "roll up" in post security in the UK.

Welcome back to the fold to Birmingham Airport which joins Manchester, Newcastle, East Midlands, Bristol et al in providing somewhere to have a final puff :p

There is obviously a demand and money to be made or this "fightback" would not be occurring.

On my way out to Luxembourg I was interviewed at Edinburgh Airport on Tuesday to rate its facilities. At the end the lady asked if there were any improvements that I would like to see introduced.

I mentioned the fact it would be nice to have a smoking area "post-security" as some other UK Airports have. I asked her if anyone else had remarked on this and suprisingly she said it was one the most mentioned aspects of facilities passengers would like to see introduced.

Now BAA no longer own Edinburgh perhaps there is hope.

Back to rolling tobacco.....

UK Airport "Duty Free" price for 500g of Golden Virginia £61

Luxembourg "Duty Paid" price for 500g of Golden Virginia 57 Euros or £46 eh.....

NB Imperial Tobacco make Golden Virginia in the UK !!!!
