Can anyone recommend a "strong " variety of the above.

I normally smoke Benson and Hedges Gold King Size Cigarettes or Rothmans King Size (Blue and White).

I have tried Old Holborn , Golden Virginia , Drum and even B&H's own hand rolling baccy.

None of them are anywhere near as strong as either of the above "proper cigarettes".

When I say strong I mean the "kick" they give your lungs on inhaling.

Is this lack of "kick" a feature of roll ups :p

I don't know if it still available, but my mother used to roll her own with "Digger Shag" which was too strong for the hardened smokers at university.
It killed her

I'm surprised roll ups don't give you a 'kick'. I used to smoke less of them than normal lum due to their strength back when I smoked tobacco. Are you using a filter tip on them? I preferred using them to having no filter at all. If you roll too tight, you hardly get a smoke at all though.

I use one of those little machines with two wheels and a plastic sheet to roll and it's very difficult at first to get the right balance between a good amount of tobacco and packing it so tight that it won't even smoke. I remember my first few wouldn't light at all and I was wondering what the hell was up with them!

I find rollies give more of a hit than pre-rolled, but then I only ever smoked Richmond and L&B.

I don't like the "Cheaper Brands" of normal Cigarettes - I wish I did it would save me a fortune :p

It's also worth noting that Duty Free Benson and Hedges are not the same as the UK ones - they are made by BAT not Gallaghers / Japan Tob like the British variety.

This will sound ridiculous to non-smokers but they taste cheap and nasty

With regard to the look of the quality and feel of the HRT's I have tried the B&H actually seemed superior to the others.

With the rolly I may have to make a "Cigar sized one" to get a decent hit:idea:

It's obviously a skilled art - it sounds like you are on a camping trip with the plastic sheets etc :p

Yeah, I used a Rizla tin which had a roller in the lid, after packing it, you shut the lid and out popped the rolly. Once you got the volume of baccy correct, it was second nature, and a good smoke as I remember.

As someone who first worked in the making of, then was in charge of a warehouse of (both overseas and inland varieties that were indentical from ITL, Gallagher and Rothmans, but different) then also in charge of transporting them over the NE of England, I know what you mean.

One of my closer friends grew up in Rhodesia. He once told me that one of the best ways to make easy money was to stuff the insides of your car with cigarette packets and run them over the border. Nowadays, immigration controls are very tight. There's something like a 200 pack limit if you bring cigarettes into the country, and if you get caught smuggling bigger stuff the consequences are potentially massive. But this was back in the day when you could drink ten pints of larger and drive home a free man. He used to smuggle cigarette cartons, diamonds, even certain weapons (or so I am told) and nobody would bat an eyelid. Now they have scanners and sniffer dogs and hundreds of ways of snuffling you out. Though in Rhodesia, the border staff wouldn't even search your car and this was long before scanners had been implemented to check vehicles. It was fast work, easy cash. My friend said he'd seen a fair amount of people get sent down, and I could sit here all day telling you the amazing stories he has told me, but he smuggled goods for almost a decade and never even got his collar felt.

Though if you do want to see smugglers get arrested (and the much tighter contorls we now have) try watching UK Border Force. I once saw an Afghan man try to bring 1500 cigarette cartons in, but he was arrested, and they took them all of him!

I smoked 'Boars Head' for years then they stopped doing it,now I am stuck with 'Old Holborn',I cant smoke Golden Virginia because its like a bonfire.
You could try a proper tobacconist (some do still exist) where you can make up your own mixture,Intended for pipe smokers I know but they may keep some fine enough cut for rollies.

Hear about some ingenious ways of bringing in illegal cigs into the UK. One company was caught after hollowing out logs and stuffing millions of cigarettes into the cavity. I'm sure if people are organised and have half a brain-cell they could get a lot more into the country and not get caught.

Are there any Cigarette producing facilities left in the UK ?

I know Bristol, Glasgow,Belfast and Southampton were all big centres for production at one time.

Are Imperial Tobacco still based in Nottingham - have they got a grand building as they are one of the UK's biggest quoted organisations.

Not sure now as I am out of the industry but as far as I know there is still a large ITL factory at Nottingham, that is where security training was carried out for the network of smaller carriers. There was also a major ITL facility at East Kilbride which has now gone, that was in charge of the daily trunks to the smaller carriers. The head office is in Bristol although I am not sure whether there is any production there these days.

The North-East was actually a big centre for production with the large Wills (later ITL) factory on the coast road, Newcastle. Gallagher had a facility on Welbeck Road in Newcastle as well. Rothmans had factories in both Spennymoor and Darlington.

Think a lot of it has gone overseas now, although a few still remain. The Rizla factory in Wales shut quite recently too.

And for anyone interested in it's location, look left when you're heading north on the ECML as soon as you pass Heaton TMD

Rothmans had factories in both Spennymoor and Darlington.

I got turned down for an office job at the Spennymoor factory in 1991.
It was to be expected, I was 19 and had just left college after getting my ND in Business & Finance, no work experience to speak of either.

Drum or Samson, both pretty much the same thing, it's Dutch but sold both in the UK and abroad.

If possible get it duty paid from over the channel. You'll see it in the UK for close to the price of Old Holborn or Golden Virginia, but someone's ripping the smoker off.

Duty paid in Belgium was about £2.50 for 50 grammes, as opposed to the UK's £7 plus.

We used to get a cheap day return with the car, and bring back a box each, saving a wad, even after taking off the cost of the trip.

It stores for years too, we even left some in storage whilst posted overseas, and it was fine when we came back :D

Have you tried sampling the loose blend varieties at your local tobacconist? If anyone can help you, it is they.

The independant baccy places are probably your best bet but a lot will be down to the individual. Personally I find B&H gold pretty mild and I don't get the same hit off them as I do from my rolly's, much prefer the flavour of home made too lol :)

Thanks very good...

Has anyone tried those electronic cigarettes - do you get "a hit " off them on inhaling ?:p

I know several people with those, they seem to use them solely to irritate pub landlords and bus drivers. You can't beat the real thing.
