Is 777003 back in service yet?
I saw a picture earlier this week at Maghull Station, working on the Ormskirk line but couldn't make out the unit number to confirm.
003 is back out, currently stabled on the back of an 8 car with 033 at Southport P1

And what's the latest with 777035 whilst I'm at it?
According to a post in the 2.0 FB page it seems 035 may never get its day. Being reported that 054 has been ordered and 035 will be scrapped.

Well an interesting development. 2 people in the know. Perhaps the more reliable has said it just needs new wheel sets which would make sense. Hopefully it lives after all

Can someone elaborate on how it became damaged on delivery? Wasn't it something about the brakes being on during its drag.

Looks like the brakes got well and truly flambéed. Wonder if this will be heading to Simms?

If the reports turn out to be true, sounds like 777054 will be a new unit as compensation.

As I’ve now edited. Seems as if it’s 2 people in the know but 1 who has been reliable throughout says it just needs new wheels which makes a lot more sense
New wheels and brakes. It'll be repaired, i wouldn't believe everything you read on some of these groups.

I suppose realistically if its caused more damage than just the wheelsets and brakes then replace the bogies with new ones. But if its actually been on fire at some point (or smoldering hot) it could in theory have melted through wiring, hoses/air lines, caused structural damage etc - again, probably repairable at a cost. Realistically speaking I'm sure it'll be repaired, but if the insurance is anything like a car insurer they'll write something off over a scratch!

If I remember rightly although there was reports of smoke (and photo evidence) when the move got stopped in the UK, it was originally held up in Europe (Germany?) for a while due to "brake issues", to which I'm not sure we know the extent.

Presumably the hold up is more over who is responsible for the bill.. Stadler, the freight company, Merseytravel, insurers, etc.

Obviously in the realms of pure hearsay but perhaps unit 054 is compensation for all the issues with the other units getting into service and someone has out 2 and 2 and got 5?

Or they realised a timetable based on 777s being quicker doesn't work as they struggle with 50X times and now have less units than they should have to meet the diagram requirements.

I never believed the faster schedule story. Any marginal gain from the faster acceleration is offset by the slower doors. It would probably save a few seconds per stop if every platformed door opened automatically when the driver released the doors. The class 507 doors all opened within seconds of the train stopping.

I usually find we end up sat waiting for right time departure with guard stood on step looking at their watch. Find also, the last train of the night can easily leave last few stops a couple of minutes early. Not quite the rapid pace of the last trains of the night on the Madrid Metro where you have a matter of seconds before train is off to next station.

Certainly seem marginally quicker than the 507/8s in releasing the doors compared to the when the guard would be operating from rear cab, much quicker if guard was operating from the passenger saloon with both opening and signalling departure.

I've used them multiple times in a day of trouble free running and seen
  • Consistently slow to release doors and losing time
  • Consistently quick to release doors, quick to close them and then arriving 1 early everywhere
  • Quick to release, slow to close and generally being on time. Some stops being far longer than others with the guard clearly waiting for a correct time departure, usually stations with a longer stretch between them.
I think, basically, it's very driver dependent. Hopefully as they get more used to the stock we'll see more confidence from them to get the doors released as soon as they've got the train stopped and are satisfied everything is safe.

Curiously though, the blurb about a new timetable and journey time improvements was removed from all the official pages (except one). Plenty of news articles from 2018-2020 where a 10% reduction in journey times is mentioned, though I can't find the table they published that showed the estimated travel time for each of the lines terminus to terminus.

I've noticed the Ormskirks are very often a few early both ways now, but that could just be due to the extention to hunts cross

The Ormskirk line has been slackly timed for a while. The 507s would often be waiting around too. I think they put an extra unit in the cycle.

035 is visible on Kirkdale Depot for anybody interested.

Both from Kirkdale station (but head on and distant in the uncovered sidings) or from Stanley Road opposite Bank Hall station (there’s some metal fencing replacing the brick for a short period where you can see it).

All 777s booked to go on North depot are now booked to go through the washer aswell.
Is the washer up and running now then at North?

Do the 777s booked to go on North depot go into the shed as well?

I know the plan back in the day was for North depot to be used primarily for cleaning.

Yep the washers in service. Both 777s and 230s are booked to go through it.

Some of the 777s go in the shed for cleaning or light maintenance, some will stay outside, it depends on what work is required on that unit.

All heavy maintenance is undertaken at Kirkdale.
