If that was the opening day crowd, I dread to think what the annual usage after 3-5 years will be. Unless somebody's planning a very large expansion of Inverness around the Airport.
That was just the "official" opening, as stated in the article, passenger services will begin tomorrow.

Now this gave me a quandry, should I put 2nd or 3rd in as the opening date?
I have looked in Quick: Railway Passenger Stations in Great Britain: A Chronology. He uses:
Opening date. The date given is that when fare-paying passengers were first carried on a train shown in the ordinary public timetable.
So 3rd it is.

I have deleted the openings for last year from post #1. For the record the details were:

Not really worth a separate thread yet as it is early days, but a joint DfT and Welsh Government study is looking at 5 brand new stations between Cardiff and Severn tunnel.
  • the study, backed by £2.7 million of UK government funding, will look at options for new railway stations and rail services on the South Wales Main Line
  • this project will focus on relieving congestion on the M4, a vital connector between south Wales and the rest of the UK
The UK and Welsh governments have today announced they are working together on a £2.7 million study, funded by the UK government, to develop options for new stations and services on the South Wales Main Line.

The study follows Lord Hendy’s recommendations from his review of transport connectivity across the UK, which put forward the need to relieve congestion on the M4.
A series of options will be considered as part of this study, among which is the development of 5 brand new stations between Cardiff and Severn Tunnel.

Following the confirmation of £50m from the UK govt and a matching £50m for the Welsh Govt, Callaghan Square and Pierhead Street stations are proposed for a new line from Cardiff Central to the current Bay line. No planned date has been mentioned as yet.

Thank you to my predecessors for initially creating and then taking on the updating of this thread.

This first post lists only those stations considered to have a good chance of being delivered in a reasonable timescale. I have taken the list ‘as is’ at December 2020 and will update it when there is new information from a reliable source, which essentially means a public statement by Network Rail or a TOC. Statements by a funding body, a development partner, a Local Authority or Government will also be considered.

Post 254 provides a list of all the stations discussed in this thread up to the end of December 2020 (65 in total). In preparing to take over the thread I have identified over 150 ‘proposed stations’ plus a number of ‘proposed lines’ where individual stations are not listed. Some of these proposals are very speculative (wouldn’t it be a good idea if …..), others were serious proposals which appear to have fallen by the wayside.

For the latest updates please refer to the latest thread posts, for the up-to-date comprehensive summary refer to the following table.

There is a separate thread for the more speculative proposals: New Stations and Schemes - a comprehensive list of speculative proposals

Edginswell has its funding secured; it's waiting for the local authority to get its arse in gear and approve the planning permission. Extraordinary given that the funding was awarded November 2021.

I think Wellington and Cullompton should be on this list. Their full business case is being developed by Network Rail.

You could add Cheadle (Greater Manchester) which has been granted Planning Permission by Stockport Council and is "set to open" in 2025. The station would be between Navigation Road and Stockport. If you do a Google search for "Cheadle station to open in 2025" you will find a Manchester Evening News article with artists' impressions. Here is a link to a Stockport Council article about funding approval: https://www.stockport.gov.uk/news/f...xpect the station to,and the new rail station.

Torbay are still awaiting plans to be presented. The last plans were 2016 passed and expired 2019. I don't know who is designing the station but it is having lifts instead of ramps. There has not even been an artist's impression. The money they have got will not be enough.

Not yet and Not yet.

There is a very long list of stations which are being 'developed' administratively. At least 615 at the latest count, if you include all the ones mentioned somewhere or other as 'a possible new station could be developed at x'. This thread is a calendar of new stations "considered to have a good chance of being delivered in a reasonable timescale", not a progressometer for all those 615.

My preference would be to only include those where there are 'shovels in the ground', failing that a signed construction contract with a firm completion date. Anything else is finger in the air stuff.

Why my reluctance? I give you:
  • Beam Park: Due to be operational May 2022.
  • Waterbeach (a relocation) received planning permission and was due to open in 2021.
  • Edginswell: The new station is expected to open in 2018.
  • Wixams: The planned date for the opening is currently July 2024 (which is around 11 years later than announced).
  • The Ivanhoe line (Leicester to Burton-upon-Trent) (planned to open in the late 1990's).
  • Portishead is set to be part of the Avon Metro!
Wellington and Cullompton: When their business case has been completed, submitted & agreed; funding secured; planning permission granted; tender written, sent out, returned and assessed. Then you might be realistically able to put out a tentative opening date.

Cheadle (Manchester). Is one of a number being progressed in Greater Manchester. GMTS 2040 Delivery Plan - 2021 refresh, para 119: Over the next five years, we aim to complete business cases for the early delivery of stations in the areas of Leigh, Lostock Parkway, Little Hulton, Golborne, Slattocks, Dewsnap, Gamesley, Stanley Green and Cheadle.

Very thorough reply! But I'm a bit confused on the criteria for the second table in the first post, as many seem to be more speculative than Cullompton and Wellington.

Shame really. I love Torquay Station, one of the best stations in the south west. It is really in need of lifts.

Indeed, it's not a pure process!

There are a couple in the 'dated' part of the table which I suspect won't happen, certainly not by the published date. Those are Cardiff Parkway and Surrey Canal. I'm sure someone posted that work had recommenced at Surrey Canal but I haven't seen anything since.

With regard to the 'undated' part, on my selection criteria I would cut most of those out. Many were in the list when I took over the thread but, so far, there has been no specific reason to remove them. But I have my ruthless pruning shears at the ready should any falter sufficiently! Hello and goodbye Beam Park? Skelmersdale I did remove as it seems extremely unlikely to progress.

Snip, snip.

Beam Park has been removed from the #1 table until there is some kind of agreement that it can progress.

Darlaston James Bridge and Willenhall have slipped to 2024. Apparently at Darlaston "you can see workmen on the ground so it is definitely happening" whilst at Willenhall some buildings have been cleared, poor ground conditions are to be remediated next and construction work will start in the summer with completion next year. Willenhall to open first with Darlaston shortly afterwards.

I have moved Cardiff Parkway and Surrey Canal from the 'dated' part of the #1 table. Cardiff Parkway because the planning application was 'called in' so the opening date is less certain and Surrey Canal because the opening date was only a comment in a document rather than a firm commitment.

Following recent discussions I have retitled the 'undated' part of the #1 table to 'Other proposals being progressed'. Once I have done some editing, this will include station proposals which are a good way along the development process and are actively being progressed. Initial ideas being pushed by a campaign group, developer, local council or similar will not feature.

I have now added details for Cullompton, Lydeway, St Annes Park and Wellington. To be fair to @Dan G , they are of a similar stage of development to others in the table so ought to be added. It does make the table a bit unwieldy though. Regarding Cheadle (Stockport) @Rail Ranger , I'm (re)thinking about it. The scheme has funding and is being developed but not through Restoring Your Railway or other usual channels.

Beam Park remains on the naughty/thinking step.

There is also a proposal to relocate Hairmyres (between East Kilbride and Thorntonhall) around 2024/25.

A few years ago, councillors were discussing the possible reopening of the railway station at Coppull. The station was on the North Union Railway and opened in 1838. The station was relocated nearer to the town centre in 1895 and did not close until October 1969. The town of Coppull is situated between Chorley and Wigan.

Has anyone any updated information on how the discussions on the reopening of that station fared?

Work on moving Waterbeach station has “lawfully commenced”
https://www.cambridgeindependent.co...ation-works-have-begun-says-develope-9300117/ says:
The Waterbeach Development Company has applied for a certificate of lawfulness to confirm that the permission to build the new station is still valid.

The application states that planning permission was granted in 2020 by South Cambridgeshire District Council to relocate the railway station to the north of the village.

However, the planning permission required work to begin on site within three years, otherwise the permission would expire.
The developer says work had “lawfully commenced” before the permission was due to expire on January 9, due to site layout works being undertaken.

The application says that 83 pegs were put in place in December last year marking out the access road between Cody Road and the railway line, as well as the edges of parking areas and circulation spaces at the station.

It adds that the markers are due to stay in place until further construction work takes place.

The application argues that the marking out of the access road with the pegs does constitute a “material operation” before the original application expired, and asks for the district council to confirm this.

The new station is proposed to support the Waterbeach New Town development. The project had initially been proposed to be developer-led, but the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) agreed in July last year to take on the responsibility of the £37million project in order to “unlock” the proposed 4,500 new homes.

Concerns had been raised by some members of the GCP about the risk the authority would be taking on by accepting responsibility for delivering the new station.

In a report presented to the GCP’s joint assembly earlier this month, it said the station was still forecast to be completed in 2025.

It added that a project team had been put together to deliver the scheme and that work had progressed.

Wixams has today been (re-)granted planning permission.

Plans for a housing development to get its own railway station have moved forward after a council approved them.

Bedford Borough Council's planning committee voted in favour of the new station at Wixams, near Bedford, almost 20 years after the estate was devised.

They're all speculative because IMHO 95% of the business cases will be rejected either by DfT or Treasury given current financial restraint

Without naming names, at least eight of the 28 in the second part of the table at #1 will be built (29%).

Full funding of Northumberland Line announced here with a video published showing the Transport Secretary at Newsham Station where construction is well underway here. Opening date is given as 'Summer 2024'
Makes you wonder where all the works already commenced, that have been underway for some months, got their funding. Seems a bit late to discover everything already started was pending final approval.

The press releases (haven't watched the video) don't actually mention funding being approved.

Northumberland Line to reopen summer 2024

The historic Northumberland Line is set to reopen next summer when passengers in the North-East will be able to reconnect with friends and family and enjoy greater access to business and education opportunities.

Transport Secretary, Mark Harper said:

“Communities in Northumberland can get ready for regular train services that will better connect people to jobs, education and opportunities while growing our economy."

Northumberland County Council Leader Glen Sanderson said:

“This is the moment we’ve been working towards, and I am so excited we’ve reached this point as we prepare to get trains rolling again through this part of our county.”

Matt Rice, Network Rail’s North & East Route Director said:

“We’re proud to be working with our industry partners on this truly revolutionary project, which will boost economic growth and bring a new lease of life to the region.”

Not only will the restoration of passenger services reconnect communities and improve connections, but it will also boost the region’s economy through improving access to jobs.

The line’s construction work alone has created almost 100 high-skilled jobs and apprenticeships, demonstrating the benefits it’s already having on the local community.

Congestion and air quality are also expected to plummet as people will be encouraged away from their cars and onto trains.
