After the last train of the day left Grosmont for Pickering there was a further train off NR delivering what appeared to be at least three coaches. The power on this was two class 43's one of which was 43423 both in very light blue livery with no discernable owner brandings and in a terrible state.
Externally, maybe. But that is not indicative of mechanical condition.

I read somewhere recently that S160 OMAHA will be staying at the railway permanently after the gala and will be joining Dame Vera Lynn as an oil fired engine in the future. If so that is very interesting news. Now all we need is the (seemingly forever delayed) overhaul of Hartland to be completed and it'll be like the early 90's again!

Yep
Been planned for a while
We are pleased to announce the conversion of steam locomotive USATC No. 2253 Omaha from coal to oil. This will be the first full-size steam locomotive oil conversion in the UK since the end of steam, and it is a crucial step forward in future-proofing the busiest heritage railway in the country.

No. 2253 was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in America and shipped to Britain in May 1943 to work on the LNER from its base at Neville Hill depot in Leeds. Designed by the United States Army Transportation Corps, No. 2253 was one of 800 “S160-Class” locomotives manufactured in North America and shipped to Great Britain in support of the war effort. Following the end of the Second World War, it was bought by the Polish State Railway and became TR203-288. It was brought back to Britain in 1992 after reportedly having a full overhaul and, in 2013, No. 2253 was sold to Peter Best.

Owner Peter Best was recently awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for his services to steam and heritage railways. Peter said seeing young people on a train hauled by one of his locomotives gives him “huge pleasure and pride".

The NYMR Engineering Department will be assisted in this oil conversion by FMW Solutions, a railroad contractor and consulting firm based in Duluth, Minnesota, USA, which specialises in mechanical and engineering design and alternative fuel technology and research. FMW President Davidson Ward said, “We are honoured to assist on this trans-Atlantic effort, with key firing components being manufactured both at our workshop in Tennessee and by the NYMR at Grosmont. The final installation is anticipated to take place on the NYMR.”

Oil Conversion Time Frame:

No. 2253 returns to NYMR for 2024 Annual Steam Gala
No. 2253 will then form part of the NYMR home fleet locomotives
FMW Solutions is currently underway with designing the oil burning equipment
NYMR will convert the locomotive from coal-to-oil over the 2024/2025 winter period
Paul Middleton, Director of Mechanical Engineering at the NYMR, said, “The conversion of No. 2253 will help to not only reduce the railways overall sustainability strategy, including reducing particulate emissions, but will also help to bring resilience during hot weather periods.

“In recent years, domestic sources for high-quality steam coal have dried up in the UK and sourcing coal from across the world is extremely expensive. Pre-pandemic we were paying £165 per ton and at its peak it reached £540 per ton. The conversion of No. 2253 to oil is key to ensuring the NYMR is resilient and can operate during the peak summer months.

Coal is part of our history and there is a balance between keeping our stories alive and bringing to life the importance of the railways, especially as next year is a major milestone with the celebration of Rail 200“.

The railway's longer term plan includes the conversion of the locomotive No. 3672 Dame Vera Lynn, the austerity class locomotive. The railway, alongside dedicated volunteers, is proactively fundraising to get this engine back in operation.

What's the latest with 34101 Hartland she seems to be taking ages

That's the million dollar question that no clear answer has ever been provided to. I swear it was being reported she'd be 'back in service the following season' as far back as 2017....

I found it very strange that 44806 was recently overhauled and 80135 is next in line meaning there will be two Black Fives and two Standard Tanks in service at the same time. Surely prioritising Hartland over those two would've made for a slightly more diverse and interesting fleet?

When would this be expected to depart. I've look on real times and can't see anything for next week as yet

Priority is being given to the overhaul of locos that will stay on the NYMR when their overhaul is complete.

It's good to see that the NYMR are running their Whitby Winter Excursions again between Christmas and into the early New Year. Winter steam is always impressive and it's a great way to fill the void between Christmas and New Year.

Good news not directly related to the railway, but the road bridge between Grosmont and Egton has now reopened, making it much easier for those from the North East to access the railway again. I'm not sure whether the bridge closure has impacted upon passenger numbers over the last couple of months

Isn’t it privately owned, in which case it could be moved away?
It is privately owned.
I believe the NYMR is obliged to overhaul it having had the use of it during its last "boiler ticket" - but once overhauled, it is entirely up to the owners as to what happens as regards the use of the loco in the future

I’ve just read in the last-but-one edition of Steam Railway that the NYMR has put 76079 up for sale.

I know it needs overhaul (and the NYMR has a long overhaul queue) but I was under the impression it was a solid performer when in service, anyone know why it’s now being sold?

Has been on the market for some time, I believe no money available for overhaul and does not feature in the railways core fleet. As always happy to be corrected.

As a matter of interest, which locomotives constitute the core fleet?
I would say:

45428 Eric Tracey
44806 "magpie"
80136 std4 tank
80135 std4 tank
75029 "The Green Knight"
30926 "Repton"
30825 "Greene King" - owned by Essex Loco Society but based at Grosmont
63395 NER T2/LNER Q6 - owned by NELPG but based in Deviation Shed
65834 LNER J27 - as above.
91234 9F
29 "peggy" -owned by Lambton locomotive trust
S160 "omaha" - owned by Pete Best (owns about 13 locos)

A lot of the locos in this list are currently in overhaul.

That's quite a lot to look after!

Core fleet loco's would need to haul 7 coaches up 3 miles of 1 in 49 from a standing start, so that rules out 65894 and 29, and 91234 is privately owned, so maybe not a future long term resident ?
76079 was a popular and high mileage core fleet loco that had the misfortune to become in need of an expensive overhaul just when the NYMR began to rack up a succession of significant annual operating losses.

The second loco off new bridge in the morning usually pulls the internal stock of coaches. It's usually 4/5 coaches on an internal diagram only. The return journey is a Grosmont- pickering one, usually before the last whitby - pickering one. 65894 or 29 can cope with 4/5 up the bank. They could also do the diner at a push but the diners would be finished their 5 course meal by the time they reached Darnholme!

There is a presentation showing how much in reserve various steam locos have when working up the bank with a heavy load.

its basically tractive effort - effort required to lift loco+coaches = tractive effort in reserve.

The best loco for the diner is actually the std tank as it is not hauling the extra weight of a tender around and most of its weight is over the driving wheels. The locos with the least reserve are the std4 tender engines eg 75029 and 76079.

Hmm interesting, might visit.
Details can found the website Info
It appears that the NYMR will only be operating Whitby to Goathland due to engineering work during the February half term.

Announced Sir Nigel Gresley (60007) working trains 22nd to 30th of March on NYMR. Then Bahamas (45596) visiting 5th to 13th April! Great to see an A4 again (hopefully teak set is back running this year) and a Jubilee after so many years on the NYMR. Should be fun!
