Glad to hear it wasn't too serious :)

Sorry to disrupt your thread there, I've since spoken to her yesterday evening and we're now not going up this weekend as she's having a new shower installed and a few other bits done. So we're waiting for her to let us know when we can go now, probably the week after, so I shall be resuming my plans for a bash this Monday after all!

Please do share your latest updates, I'm enjoying them!

No apology needed!

Very little to set the pulse racing this week just gone. My daily Salford Central > Salford Crescent > Deansgate run has thrown up five more 66s however:

66030
66034
66074
66130
66590

That aside, there's very little to look at around Manchester now. From the 142s that are allegedly stabled at Newtown Heath (according to Abrail) I need just 054 & 064, whilst the 156s at Allerton are down to just 479 & 481. I also need three 221s of the XC variety, and the last EMT 158. Once they're in the book it'll be waiting for any random ATW stuff that fills in for a 175, or random workings/freight.

For forthcoming trips, as previously mentioned I have London on Wednesday, where for a bit of a change I might go out as far as Southall, see what WCR gems might be lurking, and a return trip from Ealing Broadway to Paddington for depot stablings and Acton Yard. Will settle down there then and hopefully tick off more GWR and Heathrow stuff.

Next Saturday will also potentially be available for a trip, as the missus is off wedding dress shopping in Chester all day. After reading Kite's adventures around Beeston I now know I can get a tram to Toton, which was a revelation, so, after a filling at the dentist, I may done the old wellies and head to the retirement home of the class 60s. Either that or a few hours around Peak Forest, see what's going on.

On that note, can anybody recommend a good pair of binoculars? My pocket ones are ok to a point, but I reckon I might need a proper pair for any trip to places such as Toton. Looking to spend £30/£40.

Hasn't WCR vacated Southall? (or is that still to come as Network Rail made use of a break clause in the lease).

I believe it's around a mile walk from Toton Lane P&R to the bank overlooking Toton yard, but you should get your 60 count up (some of which probably haven't turned a wheel for years)

For £40 you might struggle for a decent pair of binos. Earlier this year I ended up plane spotting at Sheldon Country Park, and the guy there recommended the pair of binos he had and having had a quick look I could see why. Perfect for reading the reg of the birds going up and coming in! I took a photo of the details of them, which are:

7x50
Field Angle 6.6
116m/1000m

They're also waterproof and fogproof, which has to be more than useful. I suspect though that they'll cost a pretty penny. Need a pair myself before my next aviation spotting session!

Good luck with Toton, I need 60070 and 60098 to finish the lot myself, no way will I ever manage that sadly.

It's an easy enough walk from the tram stop to Toton depot and is one I've done quite a few times. You'll certainly get loads of winners with a few 66s/67s thrown in as well as anything else there. As crazy as it may seem, I recommend Toton for a Sunday because you have more 'active' things stabled there, including a couple of Freightliner and GBRF 66s.

I was led to believe it's still open, however I could well be wrong. Worst case scenario I head up there, find it's shut and then jump on the next service back to Paddington. Probably worth chancing it.

Much obliged, will take a look. I may have to treat them as an investment and pay a little bit extra. They may come in handy at a fair few yards I'd imagine.

I had heard that Sundays were better, so I might have to save the trip for a Sunday in August or something.

One other option for a Saturday was possibly Leeds. How busy is it on a Saturday? I'm assuming some stuff will be kept at Neville Hill as it's not a weekday, is that easily accessible to possibly hoover up a few more units?

Leeds was pretty good for me when I went on a Saturday. To pass Neville Hill you'd need to get a train heading in the York/Selby direction. There is also Leeds Midland Road and, while I've never passed it, there should be quite a few FL 66s/70s there along with 47830 and perhaps a skoda or two. You can pass that by getting something calling at Wakefield Kirkgate.

I have the same problem as you on the binos, I need to treat it as an investment which will pay for itself with aircraft regs in no time. However I want to have a proper look at them in the shop, rather than order them off Amazon. Something to get on with at some point soon!

A leap to Woodlesford should do the trick as well, but depending on the time of day it could be busy on Midland Road, so you may need more than one pass to get the lot. Trust me, you'll be cursing whoever parked the locos where they did  It's also worth bearing in mind it could be almost empty, and you will want a good view out of the window on the left hand side heading out of Leeds. I also suspect you'll end up getting 66953 before I do!

If 60070 and 60098 are visible at Toton, do let me know and I'll make my way up asap to fill those irritating gaps in my book.

EDIT: Neville Hill, again sit on the left hand side heading out of Leeds and prepare to write numbers quickly. A leap to Cross Gates will suffice, think the stoppers are half-hourly on weekdays. Generally speaking on a Sunday there will be a fair bit on there, and you probably won't get everything ID'd as there will be stuff hiding behind other stuff. Good luck!

I don't need 60070 or 098 so I'm guessing that they're viewable at Toton.

Royal Oak is a good bet for stuff coming into / out of Paddington ( have a look at my flickr)

With a dud on the Hope Street working today I had to wait until home time, where 66594 duly popped up trundling through Piccadilly on the way to Trafford Park.

After hitting the gym and popping home for tea I, somewhat spontaneously, decided to head up to Peak Forest for the first time since my quest began. In relative terms it's pretty much on the doorstep, yet I've never even been passed the place, let alone paid any attention to it. In the early evening drizzle I set off up to Dove Holes, turned off the A6 and wound my way alongside the quarry, eventually reaching the sidings, where 60092 was in charge of shunting duties. I parked up, walked back to the bridge over the line, and spent a few minutes watching the diggers going about the rhythmical task of loading the hoppers, with the aforementioned 60 edging closer to my vantage point all the while. The driver was clearly in it for the long haul, pulling out a sizable book after a while!

The other side of the bridge consisted of two sets of sidings, one either side of the line. A dud EWS 66 was waiting to cross the line back down towards Chinley on one side, waiting for 66619 to pass towards Tunstead before doing so, whilst the other side saw another dud EWS 66, as well as 60019, taking a rest from its shunting duties. I spent about half an hour watching people come and go from what I assume was an old stationmasters cottage, but which is now home to the DB Cargo mess room, before heading off to Tesco to get some chocolate almond milk. Needless to say if you timed it right you could get a good number of winners, and I'll be keeping an eye out for when is next good to go.

06/07/16

London-bound once more, but having to go via Stoke and not Crewe means the journey down is bloody boring until you hit the WCML-proper. Once we got to Rugeley the winners did begin to filter through, with 66061 first in the book, followed by 66012 at Nuneaton and 350260 at Rugby. Tring threw up another LM unit, 350236, as did Watford Junction, where I caught sight of both 350371 and 350110. Thereafter it was a bit sparse, with a couple of duds at Wembley all that caught the eye.

Once at Euston I found myself wandering out the side exit by platform 17, which I've never done before. It's actually very handy, as I can then walk parallel to Euston Road, avoiding the crowds, all the way down to my hotel. A free upgrade to a suite later (the perks of checking in later when all the 'normal' rooms have gone, I suppose!), and I was heading out to Paddington aboard a nice cool H&C service. The world and his wife got off with me (it was 17:30 after all), and, after a sweep of the platforms, it was aboard 360204, intended destination Southall.

99ef308c7d75657d1ea728c37a2c3fe1.png

En route to Southall I intended to do a check of both North Pole, hoping for a glimpse of an 800, and Old Oak Common, but sadly the former was empty. I did catch 57603 on the other side, but the rest of the GWR and HC/HX stuff was too far away. Acton Yard soon appeared, throwing up a trio of 66s (66007, 66080 & 66132), but after that I decided to just enjoy the rest of the short trip to Southall.

As we arrived I noted the WCR depot, and at first glance observed nothing, which was frustrating. I alighted and put the binoculars to work, but alas they were of little help beyond the front of 37685, so all that was left to do was head across the footbridge and await a HC service back to Ealing Broadway, picking up a few numbers in the process. The highlight was my first Mendip unit, with the quirky colours of 59002 rolling through.

8e4793337e0e40a5005dcf712ef1e99a.png

From here 360202 took me to Ealing Broadway, chased along by 66118 which followed not far behind. In familiar surroundings I settled in for a bit, watching the masses making their way home in the muggy evening air. Sadly their journeys were then thrown into a bit of mild panic as a brief signal failure threw services off. Indeed things got rather heated at one point so, as entertaining as seeing people shout at a train was, I decided to hop aboard a Central line service as news came through that a friend fancied a swift couple of jars around London Bridge.

5f51f6c0da4f364f1e1f5a86c3f5e424.png

After what seemed like an eternity underground (I never really enjoyed the tube, even when I lived in London) I finally emerged to semi-fresh air, only for my now-functioning phone to bring news that the friend was stuck at work (as an accountant he works every hour the devil sends), and wouldn't be making it. With no real plan I did a quick sweep of the London Bridge platforms. Given the ongoing saga with Southern this didn't take long (377447 & 455834) were the only requirements from the five units in), and so I wandered over to Blackfriars, with the intention of ticking off some Thameslink stuff.

After a delightful riverside amble Blackfriars arrived, as did I to the northbound platform, where a rather large gap in the service greeted me. Indeed four southbound services came and went before anything t'other way, with 319436 finally appearing to take me northwards, intended destination Cricklewood. I settled back for the endless stop-start, picking up a few further TL workings along the way (I can't remember where they all appeared, so for logging purposes they're all going down as West Hampstead Thameslink:

28167f6e60c1528acefb1f60370b76b5.png

Cricklewood arrived where I thought I'd be able to see the 700s in the depot. Sadly, having never been up this way before, and having failed to consult Google maps, I was too far away to see them. Off to Hendon we go then! Whilst I waited for 319010 to arrive to carry me one stop further north I did get a bit of EMT action in, with 222101 powering through. Not many of them left now for the book.

A little later than planned I did finally get the 700s in the book as we trundled past the depot, with 700003, 700005 & 700006 looking very space-aged in the artificial light of the sidings. Well worth the trip alone!

Sadly I then arrived at Hendon, which was a dump. Right next to the M1(?), nothing else to see, and a load of teenagers smoking weed at one end. Safe to say this was the signal to end the night's travels, and whilst the 20 minute wait for a southbound service wasn't the most pleasant, it did at least allow for a bit more traffic to enter the book:

6d541d862ad0aa654be54aba1dee1434.png

319447 had the honour of delivering me back to St Pancras-387105 & 387115 greeting me from the other platform- where I did a quick sweep of the Eurostar again (3218 & 4017) before heading back to the hotel via Tesco Express. I think I might be pregnant, as I came out of said etstablishment with a bottle of chocolate milkshake and some sweet potato crisps!

07/07/16

Meetings done, it was all aboard the very cosy 1440 back to Stockport. Thankfully I managed to grab my preferred forward facing priority table window seat, and settled back to see what locos were chugging up and down the WCML today. That being said, we actually started off with 378233 & 350248 at Willesden, before normal service, in the form of 92044, resumed.

The handwriting got a bit frantic at Wembley, where I did well to catch 66137, 66424 & 67010, but I could have a rest then until Milton Keynes, where we passed 377203 waiting to return south to East Croydon. Nothign much occurs after this as we diverge off to travel through Weedon, so I cracked open the Percy Pigs, and was still happily chewing away as 66748 was overtaken at Rugby. Sadly they'd all gone by the time 66057 appeared at Nuneaton, and were but a distant memory when 66181 flashed past.

Stafford (66529 & 66709) and Crewe (66094 & (86639) were a feast as always, with the highlight being 37706 all on its own, making the mammoth trip from Carnforth to Southall.

And with that I was done. 98 sightings across the two days, which could and should have been far higher if I'd actually bothered to plan properly instead of just going where the mood took. Sometimes the lack of a plan is good for the soul though, and I enjoyed it.

To round things off I also saw 67012 today, waiting at Longsight before working through to Llandudno.

With the 175 gone I'm starting to look elsewhere for entrants to this now:

158 (EMT) - 774
180 (HT) - 109/113
221 - 113/120/124/138
332 - 003/014

Sounds like a great time in London! I'm really jealous of 66619 as it's my last Freightliner 66 for sight. Hendon sounds horrid!

Very productive again palmersears, see you saw one of my last 2 red sheds as well, 66181 at Nuneaton. Them meetings in London are certainly helping you strike off a fair bit too.
Enjoyable read too.

Looks like you had an enjoyable time.
You'd think that Hendon would be a crime free zone, what with the police training centre being based there :).
Maybe they were student police officers ;)

Firing through the requirements fast there! Feel sorry for you having to endure Hendon and indeed, the rubbish shack at Cricklewood!

You've done something I've yet to do, that is seeing a 700. Hoping to change that this weekend <D

It was easily the worst place I've festered thus far. At least I know now, safe to say there won't be a return trip!

Sounded like a very productive couple of days in London :)

Thank you, Kite. Can I also thank you for alerting me, via your trip reports, of the tram stop in Toton. Will be making use of that in August I think to visit the 60s graveyard.

They do indeed help, particularly when I can wangle an overnight stay. I'm down there again for two days the week after next, sadly this time they'll be day trips, which don't lend themselves to unit grabbing.

If they were then I fear for the future of our police force :D

I must say the 700s look bloody smart, in my opinion, particularly in the early evening light as at Cricklewood. I've already got 40% of them cleared, so hopefully I can get them all grabbed not long after their full introduction.

08/07/16 & 09/07/16 - One thing Leeds to another

I mentioned previously that 67012 was my only spot of Friday. Then I arrived home to find the missus was planning an evening out with a friend. The number-hog in me was secretly delighted and, after dropping them off at the restaurant I set off up to Peak Forest again, see what was what. It turns out that the place is actually pretty busy, in Peak Forest terms, of a Friday. I watched 60012 trundling about on shunting duties, and a couple of dud 66s readying themselves for long slogs down south. 66148 was also in attendance, taking a break in the sidings by the mess room. I watched proceedings, which were set against a wonderful background of glorious red skies over the Peak hills, and was thoroughly contented. Indeed I was so engrossed in very little, that I almost missed 66607 running light engine over to Tunstead.

As 22:00 arrived I set off back towards home, and, purely through force of habit, checked to see if anything interesting was heading through Stockportand/or Hazel Grove. As luck would have it a NR test train was making its merry way towards me, and I thus arrived at Disley with a couple of minutes to spare before 37601 tore through, lights ablaze and engines deafening, with 37602 bringing up the rear. Nice way to end the day, as not long after a rather intoxicated wife-to-be rang looking for her taxi home!

I awoke early the next day, as it was off to the dentist for a filling. Forewarned it 'could take a while' I had blocked off an hour of the morning, and was thus pleasantly surprised to find myself back in the car 20 minutes after arriving, with half a numb mouth and nowhere to go. The other half was in Chester wedding dress shopping, so, in a spur of the moment decision, I found myself aboard the 10:03 from Hazel Grove to Piccadilly. Once I'd fought through all the mutton dressed as lamb who were off to Chester races I purchased my West Yorkshire Day Ranger, and settled aboard a very comfortably loaded 185 for the trip to Leeds. Nothing at Guide Bridge meant I could settle back and enjoy the wonderful scenery (spoiled only by Stalybridge!), noting nothing until Huddersfield, where 144023 became the first unit in the book for the day.

Having never alighted at Leeds before, it took me a few minutes upon arrival to work out what to do. I knew the TPE platforms could be discounted with all the 185s already accounted for, but decided the service frequency was such that I could comfortably cover the station in a roving fashion. Indeed the next hour was spent ambling around, picking up a plethora of units, predominantly 158s and 333s, with the odd 321 or 142 thrown in. I did also catch 66724 on its way through to Rylstone.

After a quick stop for an apple (my mouth was now able to function properly after the anesthetic had worn off!) I decided to see what Midland Road had to offer, so it was aboard 144015 for the short hop to Woodlesford. The Freightliner colours soon appeared, and I scribbled furiously as we passed. At Woodlesford I had a stroke of luck, where a late running 144 arrived just as I'd crossed back to the Leeds platforms, saving me a 15 minute fester in the pouring rain. Cue more furious scribbling as we made our return trip. Sadly, after totting up the numbers, all I needed from the 14 I caught were 66511 & 66560. A sign that I've made real progress with the FL roster :D / :(

Upon our return to Leeds it was straight off to see what Neville Hill had. 158796 eventually took me passed, after waiting 5 minutes for a 185 to go ahead, and I was surprised to see the depot was pretty bare. As well as a pair of EMT 43s that I couldn't ID the only other things visible were two XC 43s (43321 & 43378), and 333009. Didn't really justify the 17 minute wait at Cross Gates, but hey ho.

Finding myself back at Leeds once more the rain began to fall, so I decided, after a good 2 or so hours, to head for Manchester, as a few errands needed running before the shops shut. All aboard the colourful 185123 for home then, and the end of a short but sweet trip out. I reckon a proper day here, complete with an on foot visit to Midland Road to pick up all the hidden units you can't see from the train, will very much be in order.

I love the play on words in the title! Lots of winners there but it's a shame that Midland Road didn't have too much there.

Leeds was certainly good to you! Shame about Midland Road not having much on, same for Neville Hill, but a very productive day nonetheless.

Never been to Peak Forest myself, should imagine it can get crazy up there though!

Quite a good day for the 158s :)

Indeed, although I'm not even half-way through them all yet! Having had a quick look I see a large number are north of the border, so they may not get seen to for some time.

I love the play on words in the title! Lots of winners there but it's a shame that Midland Road didn't have too much there.

It just came to me in a flash of inspiration when I woke up yesterday. I certainly think I've peaked now in terms of titles!

Never been to Peak Forest myself, should imagine it can get crazy up there though!

I wouldn't exactly call it 'crazy,' but if you get the right 1/2 hour window then it's certainly mildly hectic. To be honest even if you only see a couple of units it doesn't really matter, the scenery surrounding the place is worth the drive alone.

I think my next trip is now looking like being 4 August, when I have a day off. Providing this isn't needed for impending house purchase stuff (I'll finally be a 'proper' grown up soon!) then I think what I'd like to do is make a full day of it and hit Toton, Etches Park and Leicester, before possibly finishing off at either Tamworth or Nuneaton. Will need to look into the best ticketing options, as well as a new set of binoculars as previously mentioned, and see if this is likely to be a logistically possible day out.

A quick question for those in the know:

Are these any good for the money?

A quick update on progress, as last we spoke I'd just been to Leeds.

As avid readers will know, Manchester and the surrounding area offers little in the way of winners these days (he says having been doing this for only 6 months!). Pickings are slim, and confined mainly to freight workings. That was indeed the case a week last Tuesday as, after a late finish at work, I stood in the evening sunshine on platform 13 at Piccadilly to see two more of my favourite class units roll by in the shape of 86605 & 86627. Looking battered yet glorious, they purred through on their way to Trafford Park.

Two days later, and having yet again finished work late (racking up the overtime like nobody's business!), I was again occupying the far reaches of Piccadilly. Sadly this time the 66s on 4O08 and 4M61 were duds, much to my annoyance, but capturing 158819 as I walked back towards the main station for my 150 home did soften the blow slightly.

Friday arrived, not before time, and, for the first time in a while, I ventured out aboard the 12:17 from Salford Central to see 66051 at Hope Street cement works, it having not long arrived from the Peaks. Fast forward 6 hours and, once again on the furthest reaches of Piccadilly, I had the good fortune to add 156415 to the book, it filling in for a poorly 158 on the Lime Street - Nottingham run. A nice change.

Saturday! Serious grown-up business to conduct today, with final mortgage applications to submit in Buxton. Not anticipating anything spotting-related in the slightest I did well to actually notice 66147 trundling across the bridge towards Dove Holes with a couple of wagons in tow. RTT gives no indication as to what it was doing, but I can only assume it was off to Peak Forest, as the same loco has now appeared on the daily Peak Forest - Hope Street workings this week.

Mortgage application in, it was off to the potential first home for a wee bit of a look round again, see what was needed if/when we move in. Imagine my surprise as, whilst wandering down to the nearby park, we crossed over the New Mills to Strines line just as a procession of FL 66s went by. Two of the six were duds, however I still needed 66514, 66563, 66603 & 66615. Proper bonus! I'm led to believe this is a weekly occurrence of a Saturday, so I can see me spending quite a few afternoons on the aforementioned bridge!

Finally, to yesterday, and a commute to London and back for a change. Very little on offer until we hit Hemel Hempstead, however once we did I happened upon 387130 & 387131, the newly livered GWR units, undergoing testing from Wembley to Crewe. Deeper into London and 378204 presented itself at Watford Junction, followed by 66016 taking a break at Wembley. Willsden was the usual goldmine of random units, with 67015, 86246 & 92023 all dotted about, whilst Euston itself saw a couple of LM units, 350254 & 350259. Nothing on the way back, as I fell asleep at around Queens Park and woke up at Stoke! I blame the heat, too much for a Northern lad to handle!

That leaves operator progress overall as follows (those not listed haven't been started):

Forthcoming plans are beginning to take shape as well, which is nice. Saturday coming will be a trip to the DRS Open Day at Gresty Bridge, followed by a wander over to the back of Basford Hall to try out the new binoculars, see if I can pick anything up. Should be a nice morning out, and the chance to pick up a few rarer bits and pieces potentially.

From there I have a day off on 29 July, and another on 4 August. THe former is likely to be my Toton/Etches Park/Leicester works voyage, whilst I'm not sure on the latter. Given it's a full day I could potentially wander quite a distance, but I shall need to research that a bit more. As always, suggestions welcome!

I've heard no-one mention GWR's 387/1s for sight in their trip reports so far, so as far as I'm concerned palmersears is the first!

Rather good going it has to be said, it's going to start getting hard now mind!

Probably one of the first regulars to get those two new GWR 387s into your book :)

I'm honoured 8-)

Indeed. Couldn't quite believe my eyes when 6 of them rolled passed! From all accounts the weekly move can have anything between two and six locos involved, so it might be useful in tracking down a few more FL units.

In binocular news, I went to Peak Forest again last night (needed a drive to clear my head after a hard day) to try them out after their arrival on Wednesday, by golly are they good. Spent an hour looking around, numbers previously out of reach are now clear as day! A couple of workings trundling through in addition to the units stabled around the works, allowing three additions to the book in the end; 66177, 66207 & 66621.

I'm currently halfway through yet another trip to London, and I'm heading back via Stafford and Crewe for once, so hopefully I'll have quite a bit to add to the book come the evening.

Glad to hear the binos are working out well, a good investment already by the sounds of it. I really must try and get to a shop to try out a pair of binos so I can have a good excuse to go plane spotting again. It's no fun when you're on your own and can't read the regs!

I meant to mention previously too, only 90 Eurostar sets? I need 102 of them for haulage (well, half-sets at least) although that does include all the way up to 374034.

That's all that trainlogger has listed for Eurostar, so I'm not sure as to why their is a disparity :-?

The second day of the week spent zooming up and down the WCML, although at a slightly steadier ace on the way down as the tilt on the 390 broke just after we left Stockport.

As regular readers will know, very little regular passenger units are left for me on the way to Euston and back now, with a smattering of 350s and one Virgin 221 to hunt down. It was therefore a wonderful surprise to catch four 350s at various points on the journey down. 350245 & 350377 were first up, working together from Tring down to Euston, followed shortly afterwards by 350105 at Hemel Hempstead. 350264 rounded things off, taking a rest in Camden sidings alongside 319429. That leaves me needing just nine 350s.

Also of note on the way down were 66151 & 90028 at Wembley.

The way back was pretty dull, if truth be told. I dozed until just after Rugby, catching a few dud 66s as we headed back north, only starting to pay attention once more as we passed a rather crowded Stafford. Basford Hall arrived, and a bit of bobbing and weaving from my table seat (much to the amusement of the small child opposite) did enable me to clap eyes upon 66170, which was on it's way out of the yard southbound, as well as 66525 & 70003 further in. The curve round towards Gresty Bridge then brought GBRF's 66758, before the day was rounded off with a bit of DMU action when I got 150282 arriving in to the bay from Wales, and 153323 doing likewise from Derby on the other side.

23/07/16

Awaking at 0730 with a plan, it was quickly down to B&Q for chalk paint and clamps, purchased for a DIY project, before heading to Stockport for a day return to Crewe. All aboard the 0904 dud 390 then, and a partial retrace of yesterday evening's step. The carriage was full of what you would call, erm, 'traditional' railway enthusiasts, possessing a plethora of books and cameras, and engaging in riveting conversation about what was heavier, a 185 without a toilet or a 156 (or something equally bonkers). I whacked the iPod on, got through a chunk of James' latest effort, and then alighted some 25 minutes later, along with most of the population of the 390, to make my way towards Gresty Bridge.

Stopping briefly for a bottle of water and a Fredo (couldn't resist, even if they are now 75p!), it was then down passed Crewe's ground, where I've seen Stockport turn in some shocking performances over the years, toward the DRS open day. Whilst the majority of those I left the station with had elected to take the shuttle bus, a good number were walking, and it wasn't long before the back of the queue appeared. Given it was only 0940 by this point, and nothing was opening until 1000, I decided to carry on passed the depot, arriving a couple of minutes later at the western side of Basford Hall, albeit a fair distance away. Clambering up the bank to rest my binoculars against the fence (which seems to serve only as a screen, not as an actual barrier), I scanned along to see what was around. Sadly a dud EWS 66 hauling a rake of tankers was nearest, handily blocking a good chunk of what was in the rest of the yard, so I had to get a bit inventive, peering through gaps between tankers and utilising the full length of the 200 metre bank to pick up some new numbers for the book.

After 15 minutes or so I wandered through the undergrowth to the fence at the edge of the yard, where I bumped into a very friendly FL employee. After a brief chat (he too was off to the open day as his shift was at an end) he kindly produced a map of the yard, and marked upon it what, to the best of his knowledge, was where. Armed with this, I trekked along the boundary fence, picking up the old wrecks nearby, before returning to the bank to gobble up another couple of numbers. Just as I left I was approached by a couple of older gentlemen, who had been at the bank since I had arrived some 30 minutes earlier. We chatted about the goings on - they had been first in the queue at Gresty Bridge and were done already! - and I left them with the FL yard map, which they assured me would keep them entertained for hours. It's the little things, eh?

Sadly there were a couple of numbers I couldn't pick out, so in the interests of data integrity I cannot include these in the day's findings, even though they were 90% likely to have been in the mass of green and yellow somewhere.

Now pushing 1100, the queue at DRS had gone, so I handed over my £5 entry fee, and wandered around the bustling yard. Some very nicely restored locos, juxtaposed beautifully with a new 68, and it was wonderful to see so many young kids enjoying themselves. Sadly I cannot say the same for some of the grown-up attendees, who were dishing out snide remarks and tuts at a furious rate whenever a youngster got in a shot. A tiny minority they may be, but it's disappointing to see that kind of behaviour over what, at the end of the day, are just trains.

Rant over, I had a lovely time, even though I was only really there to get some numbers. I also got some propaganda from a protester as I left, who seems convinced I now have radiation poisoning from the nuclear flasks they hide on site...

With that it was back to Crewe, with the intention of heading home to start the aforementioned DIY. A stroll down Gresty Road again, now bathed in sunshine, and I arrived at platform 6 to find well over 50 spotters/photographers/enthusiasts, young and old, covering the two extremities of the platform. A check of RTT informed me the 'Cheshire Cat' railtour from Eastleigh to Stockport was due in 20 minutes or so, with 2x37 on the front, so I figured I would hang around for that. Giving not a jot about a photo I decided to head elsewhere around the station in the meantime, using the stonking new binoculars to get a look at 47790 way out in the sticks back towards Basford, as well as 57309 in between platforms 11 and 12. Two WCRC 37s, one dud and 37668 sat in platform 8 as well, which was a bonus.

As I returned to platform six I pondered if I'd had a day so loco-centric since my quest began, reasoning I probably hadn't. Paying little attention to the VTWC service that pulled in (This needed to clear before the railtour entered, much to the displeasure of the waiting hoards), I wouldn't even have bothered checking the number had the cab not, completely by chance, stopped right in front of me. And what would you know, it was 221113, the last piece of the VTWC puzzle :D

After this excellent turn of events, I didn't really give a stuff what was on the railtour, but still, 37606 & 37609 are additions. The railtour came and went, half the station then left en masse, and I got on a very lightly loaded 175 for the return to Stockport. Final winner for the day? 87035 in Crewe heritage centre!

And with that, we're done. One ToC cleared, and a good number of 'quirky' stuff spied. I very much enjoyed the open day, will have to see what the next one is that's reasonably close by. Basford Hall was less fun, I'll be saving a return trip to the barren lands parallel for a day when I really do have nothing better to do!

Off to plan Friday's Toton/Derby/Leicester jaunt!

I'm sorry to say that there isn't a 66625 - there is a 66525 though so maybe it was that?

Sounds like a great time with a very soche FL employee there too. Well done on clearing VT!

Many thanks, fishquinn! You are indeed correct with 66525, fat finger syndrome strikes! Posted edited to reflect this.

Well done on finally clearing VTWC! I can't imagine how dull Basford Hall's got to be though!

Not going to lie, it wasn't a trip I'll look back on with much fondness! Indeed I only went to pass the time before the open day.

A guy I got chatting to (well, who talked at me) said he'd been coming down most Saturdays for over 15 years. By Christ that's got to be dull.
