Literally all that we’ve said might be 444 have a chance of this happening. Look on RTT for Weymouth or Portsmouth Hbr services formed of 9 coaches.

Until a couple of years ago it was almost never ever planned in the working timetable, but sometimes happened during recovery from disruption, or during engineering works. As an example of “almost never”, in the May 2019 timetable there was one mixed ECS move from Bournemouth depot to Bournemouth, at 0531, and it split into Waterloo and Weymouth trains.
I’m not sure if it’s ever been a long term thing…

I don’t believe there is any booked 9 car working, but with various shortages it can happen.
In regards to a previous poster mentioning a 10 car at Weymouth, that is only permitted into and out of Jersey Sidings, there cannot be diagrammed 10 car working although there was an exception made back in the summer for a week where one train ran as a 10 car under the instructions from control. They do occasionally do permissive working and it could have been that you saw.

Almost a daily occurrence these days. Harder to notice from a distance when both are in SWR livery. 60% of the 444s and about 50-60 of the 450s are now grey.
