Not certain if it was 70 at the time but I was fortunate enough to be offered a cab ride from Barnstaple to Exeter St D back in the summer of 1990 which I willingly accepted. This was an early Saturday evening service formed of a 3 car class 101 that skipped a handful of the quieter stations on-route and on several occasions the speedometer indicated 70 mph, the ride quality though was quite respectable unlike that of the 142/143.
The fast services seem to work out at about 36mph in 1990, so I think you would need some 60 and 70 stretches as now.

Had 47s up to 105 mph on several trips, remember going down from Potters Bar to Alexandra Palace at that speed then the anchors went on for Freight Terminal Curve, quite fun standing in the vestibule at that speed.

115mph has been suggested from a few sources as just about the highest recorded 47 speed, 105 would be quite easily done.

The 47/7s were often recorded at slightly over 100 once passed for this speed in May 1984. The final field divert was also modified to come in at a higher speed on 47/7s to improve performance at higher speeds on this subclass.

I have had a few speeding trains over the years, some of the notable ones were:

a cab ride on a 47/8, from Holyhead to Chester, on a non stop relief around mid 80’s, were were doing 99mph on anglesey, stopped on the through roads at Bangor, due to trespassers on the Menai Bridge, then continued on with 90mph a lot of the way to Chester, arrived about 20 mins early, was quite a character the driver and a bit of a nutter, was great fun, also let me blow the horn,

pair of 20’s on raiiltour doing 85mph on the GSW, had been diverted from booked route down the WCMl, due to wires down, the driver thrashed the hell out of them, was one hellfire run, excessive speeds all the way, was a Pathfinder overnight multi traction overnight trip,

Deltic Royal Scots Grey on a Virgin cross country return trip on Mk2 a, to Scotland over a weekend, out to Edinburgh and return Glasgow, was a test run for the Deltic for 100mph running, so was allowed 110mph officially, but achieved 116mph down beat took and Shap, was brilliant runs, very lively running, think the speedo was under reading,

had few 91’s in the 90’s doing 135-140mph, mainly on the Newcastle-York Scottish 3hr 59 mins Pullmans, with some very fast runs, and lively running especially north of Newcastle, had cups of coffee fly across table,

had some fast runs on the Birmingham-Euston line, with 86’s, think once did Euston-Coventry in about 58 mins, quite a few must of been doing good 110mph maybe more, on Mk2a’s,

had over the years on railtours especially, some very lively and interesting runs, 37’s doing 100mph between Swansea and Cardiff, swaying a lot on the curves, 56’s and 58’s getting on for 100mph between Birmingham and Bristol, and until tornado did 100mph plus officially, the fastest ever with preserved steam 46229 Duchess of Hamilton doing 96mph down shap, with retiring driver Les Jackson on last ever run, achieved 85mph even before Lancaster, was load 11 and dead 47, did something like passing Lancaster to Carlisle in 66 mins, equalling the Caledonian timings with double the load.was best steam run ever.

Had some freight engines doing 90mph on settle and Carlisle on special trains in 90’s, pair of 31’s on relief train hitting 100mph bottom of Lickey bank, and many more, but cant remember them all, although they all took place in pretty much the 80’s and 90’s, when speeding wasn’t so frowned upon so much, and drivers were willing to have a go, nowadays there is very little scope for such exciting running, due to mentioned black boxes etc.
