West Midlands via Manchester adventure- 05/11/16
I wasn’t quite sure what Saturday was meant to be, jumping between a Lancs Ranger, a Cheshire Ranger and eventually a West Midlands Ranger, deciding that because it was really my last huge trip of the year (I am however going down to Nottingham on Nov 12 and going down to London with my girlfriend Dec 3/4) I may as well go all out and clear up some of my bits of track that I required that way. It was to be a four pronged attack, and a much more fun route via Manchester rather than the slog via Derby on a Voyager. And with that, it was out for the classical 0603 to Manchester Victoria, this morning with dud
185110 working. The guard seemed to be having lots of fun playing different automated announcements, with one saying that you needed your reservation card with your advance ticket, otherwise it wouldn’t be valid (not exactly true now!). It was however a fairly average journey, getting to Leeds at 0743, 4 late. My heart however sank when I saw how my connecting 0753 service was doing. It was 6L already and my connection at Manchester was only a +10! It didn’t get any better as dud
185112 staggered in at 0806 and ended up stuck behind 158904 on the Huddersfield stopping service up until Mirfield. We ended up 21L by Huddersfield, but thankfully clawed back a couple minutes to be 18L into Piccadilly for 0901.
With the 0855 Pendolino long gone, I instead pursued the stopping service which was happily formed of winner
323233. My god, I’d forgotten how fun these were on long distance runs! Even though we called absolutely everywhere including the pleasantly named Goostrey, we got up to one heck of a speed out in the sticks, blasting our way to Crewe almost 6E for 0955, meaning that I’d made up a fair whack of time in the process. This also created a +6 onto the London via Birmingham service, which was again happily formed of winners
221101/221110, and despite being formed of 10 coaches it was strangely busy, but I bagged a pair of seats for the run to Wolverhampton, scoring me new track and filling in an annoying gap on the map between Stafford and Wolverhampton. The fact that we were fast to there and arrived in at 1030 meant that I managed to see my intended service leave (the 0949 from Crewe to Brum), putting me just 7 minutes behind. The dwell on the Vomiter meant that it was faster to swap onto winner
170635 down to Sandwell and Dudley, where I spotted a shack scratch opportunity.
A quick swap here saw me join winner
323217 up to shack 1, Dudley Port, leaving just Coseley and Penkridge to get between Stafford and Birmingham New Street. It was a nice island platform and a +4 here, so it wasn’t long until dud
323219 rolled in for the stagger to Birmingham Batcave where I had a +7 onto the Lichfield Trent Valley. The transfer from 1A to 11B basically took all of that time but I was rewarded with winner
323202 up to shack 2, Sutton Coldfield. The Cross City leaf fall timetable was in force, meaning that the Lichfield TV services were all stations from Aston to Lichfield TV, the Four Oaks services were all stations to Four Oaks, but most importantly the Lichfield City services were fast to Sutton Coldfield then just Four Oaks, Butlers Lane, Blake Street and Lichfield City. My all stations service to Trent Valley was slipping like crazy, ending up 5L by Sutton Coldfield, but somehow the City service hadn’t caught up and filed perfectly in behind. Winner
323201 was in charge and was taken for the run on a very dodgy connection to shack 3, Blake Street. This required a dash under the subway and back onto the other platform as dud
323241 was waiting to take me back to shack 4, Four Oaks.
I noted dud 323208 on the Four Oaks stopper which was good as this meant it was kept out of the way for the day (It’s a prolific dud for me that seems to appear every time) and instead I was gifted with winner
323222 up to shack 5, Shenstone. This shack is an utter pain considering the half hourly service, and it was almost a complete screw up as dud
323202 rolled in slightly early, prompting me to absolutely leg it over the bridge mumbling expletives. Thankfully I was on the platform as the doors were released, ready for the short run to shack 6, Butlers Lane. One last move on the Cross City for today, and that was dud
323215 up to the end of the line, shack 7, Lichfield Trent Valley. This left Lichfield City and Erdington to get on the line, but it was time to attack the third bit of new track and that required a winning
350125 to take me up to shack 8, Rugeley Trent Valley. Geez this is a shack! Some nice high speed action, but absolutely freezing and windswept on a bitter November afternoon. It was a 20 minute wait until winner
170630 trundled in, with an interesting calling pattern of Rugeley Town, Hednesford, Cannock, Walsall, Bescot Stadium, Tame Bridge Parkway, Witton and Birmingham New Street due to the football. We did get rather busy, but it wasn’t the full and standing hell that the guard tried to convince us it would be

I bailed at shack 7, Tame Bridge Parkway, and made the awkward crossing over to winner
170505 for the handy additional call at shack 8, Bescot Stadium. I barely made the ruined +5 (now a +0) onto dud
323214 down to shack 9, Duddeston.
This completed the track from Rugeley to Aston, leaving just the direct loop out to Hamstead to score next time. I however had one more shack in my sights, and that was in the hands of dud
323214 to shack 10, Perry Barr. Annoyingly, it was dud
323217 taking me to Birmingham New Street where I shifted my sights onto the WCML branch but it was bloody dud
390137 forming the next service! This was merely a filler move to Birmingham International was a cosy 10 minute ride until I jumped off and awaited…dud
350123 to shack 11, Hampton in Arden. It seems that luck wasn’t on my side for winners at the moment! This bad streak continued when dud
350374 made an unwelcome appearance back to Birmingham International. Thankfully, I made a daft zero connection onto winner
350372 back down the line, this time taking my chances and going for a +3 at shack 12, Tile Hill.
The connection over the long, winding bridge was easily made and I managed to score myself winner
350254 back to Birmingham International where I dropped back to see what was on the ex-London Pendolino. Thankfully this time it was winner
390011, providing a nice warm environment to give the phone a boost, and we had such a long damn announcement on arrival at New Street

‘Ladies and gents, we’re now arriving at Birmingham New Street, our final destination. I hope you’ve all had a pleasant journey and that all of you who wanted seats managed to get one, indeed there were plenty seats up front. I know that there’s been a few events on today so that will explain that. Please, do travel with us again and I do apologise for the two minute delay here into New Street, such is life with the congested approaches and lines into the station, but you should all make your connections and I’m sure that this won’t have too much of an effect on your day. Once again, thank you for travelling with Virgin today, and this is Birmingham New Street, our last stop this afternoon!’
After listening to a winning Oscars speech by the guard, I jumped off at Brum and made my way out for a drink before spotting the illusive Eat4Less (we have one of these in Newcastle and its VERY popular!) and grabbing a much needed burger for 99p. It was now time to head home, believe it or not! It was now 1700 and I needed the 1722 service…to Stansted Airport

Oh come on, you didn’t think I was going home direct did you? Indeed, I was heading via Nuneaton, Stafford, Crewe and Manchester on a 6 hour epic journey instead! Winner
170105 kicked off the proceedings, scoring me new track from Water Orton to Nuneaton, filling in an equally annoying gap. Arrival into Nuneaton was all on time, and saw me make a very handy connection onto the 1803 Pendolino to Stafford. This was dud
390010, and it was most annoying considering that the 1752 Desiro was a winner, but catching that would have left me with a +4 or bust at Crewe! Thankfully, I had a more fruitful reward of winner
350248 from Stafford to Crewe, where I took refuge in the waiting room until the 1911 to Manchester turned up. To my annoyance, it was dud
390137
Never mind, as I jumped on board for the run to Stockport just to kill time. By now, the fireworks were lighting up the sky, and it was a rather surreal moment standing on the platform as the sounds of what seemed like gunfire littered the background.
It was dud
323239 on the 1943 to Picc but my god was it a lively run! We absolutely hammered our way to Piccadilly, making up 4 minutes of delay (We literally did the run in 9 minutes) and providing some entertainment before arriving in at 1956, leaving me to find food in the form of a hot slice of Pizza from Sainsbury’s. I had a while now for the 2042 to York, so ended up watching the comings and goings (not a lot), noting the illusive celebrity Pacer 142009 ticking over on Platform 3. See, this is where the fun began. Dud
185126 trundled in on the busy York service, but I secured a table seat. Except, I was joined by two lads from Middlesbrough who were both clearly a bit drunk. However, they seemed relatively friendly (one looked like a budget Russell Howard) albeit as they were Middlesbrough fans they weren’t too keen on my Geordie origins

However, they began to grate as they started getting personal with the woman next to me (who was from Wroclaw in Poland) before insisting I get a haircut and change careers. I literally ended up babysitting them, but on the plus side they did offer me a can of lager. I’m no big drinker, but I really needed a drink just to tolerate them and their nonsense.
By the time we got to York, the lager had just about mellowed me out so as to not want to sedate myself every time they spoke (even if it wasn’t particularly pleasant tasting) but it seems that the 21st pint of it for the lads (I kid you not, they’d had that EACH) for the day had knocked them out cold, with me waking them up on arrival at York 7L at 2203. This would normally spell disaster as I was booked on the 2206 to Newcastle, but it was 20L somewhere near Doncaster, so I left the two lads to get off before me (they’d convinced me to escort them back to Darlington for the Middlesbrough connection) and hung back on the platform to let them do whatever it was they were doing. A barrier was in force, so I talked my way onto the ‘civil side’ of it, and walked around on the platform to keep warm until dud
91119 arrived, taking a seat in Coach F for a surprisingly quiet run north. (I’d used the 2109 TPE a couple of weeks ago and had to endure 11 middle aged women completely smashed off their faces sat around me, ending with one of them vomiting in the aisle). It was thankfully a fast run north, with us holding the 20 minute delay and arriving into Newcastle at 2327.
As for the Middlesbrough lads? The Middlesbrough train was a +8 and so long gone by the time we got to Darlo. I also didn’t see them alight so for all I care, they woke up in Heaton T&RSMD
An excellent day nonetheless.
