As mentioned above, this referendum result applies to Network Rail members only.

Whilst there are a few disappointed at the result, the majority will have probably wanted it to be resolved. It will be interesting to see whether Network Rail can now process the pay increase in time for the next pay day, or will they try and hold on yet another month? They've done that before.

I note that negotiations for the pay and conditions award for 2025 will now commence opening with a Business Council meeting on the 22nd of October 2024.

TOC result received too.

Our Ref: BR2/15/4

25th September 2024

Dear RMT Member,

DEFEND JOBS, PAY AND CONDITIONS - TRAIN OPERATING COMPANIES

I write to advise you that the referendum has now closed, and the result is as follows: -

Are you prepared to accept the proposals?

Votes Cast: 15462

Voting 'Yes': 15283

Voting 'No': 179

I want to thank you for your patience, determination, and efforts during this dispute. The national dispute has now concluded, with you and your colleagues securing a successful outcome in defending your jobs, pay, conditions, and pensions.

This ends a period of national dispute, which started in March 2020 with what amounts to an industry-wide settlement that members of Network Rail and the Train Operating companies voted overwhelmingly to accept.

RMT members have stood united in our aspirations to defend the railway and secure jobs for the future. We entered this dispute together and have come out together with a united and stronger RMT Union.

Your efforts have demonstrated what our Union can achieve through solidarity and determination. You should all be incredibly proud of your actions and achievements during this dispute.

I will seek the implementation of this pay deal and ask for backpay to be issued as soon as possible. I will write to the companies to advise them of this result and press your company to deal with the matter. However, the implementation may be delayed as the TSSA has yet to commence a referendum on the offer while they seek a pay deal for managers where they have recognition.

Finally, thank you for your support and efforts during this dispute. I will continue to update you on developments.

Yours sincerely,

Don’t like the sound of that some people at work were talking of pay being in nov pay but that tone does make me doubt it

We were expecting it in this pay, clearly that's now not going to happen. Can't say I know how negotiations with TSSA are going to know where we stand

Yeah I’ll be honest have no idea either plus won’t it needed to be voted on also feel like that just pushes it back a month or 2 pay wise

Hang on, is everything now sorted, or will there still be some strikes?

Only those like XC that are having separate internal issues.

Hopefully their management like LNER will be made to see the error of their ways and the planned action will get suspended.

Agreed - plenty of good news around at the moment! Makes a refreshing change after the past couple of years.

It most certainly does mate. It’s been a torrid time for both passengers and staff.

I wasn’t sure whether the literally hundreds of weekend Northern cancellations were solely due to the pay dispute, or whether there was something more to it.

That’s more due to Sundays being outside the working week for guards, and not enough volunteers to cover services, so not directly related.

Presumably having managers/contingency staff working trains in place of actual train crew rather than recruiting or incentivising current staff to do RDW

Ah I see. Like almost every other TOC, then.

Although it’s a brave statement to say XC are not recruiting.

Not the case at all , I mean for example if Northern were deploying their contingency staff and managers on a sunday they should be able to deliver a better train service

Chuck me the same incentive contingency staff get to work their rest days and I'll do a grip and provide far more flexible route coverage

Oh wait, no, I'm just a guard working as a guard, no need to offer me hundreds of pounds of incentives and lunch on the company for my 700 route miles plus on my day off

Northern have been deploying managers and contingency staff on Sundays. Imagine how much worse the service would be without them working.

Did anyone see Mick Lynch’s video not long released? He said in the video the pay deal has been accepted by all people, I’m only assuming that means TSSA and RMT? He also said he’s written to both the DFT and TOC’s asking for the backpay to be paid ASAP and will not stand for anyone trying to delay the backpay. Can anyone confirm for sure if TSSA did accept the pay deal?

TSSA is yet to put the deal to members I believe was suggested earlier?

Basically it would appear the RMT wants the pay deal to be implemented with backpay before the result, and it comes down to whether the TOCs accept that the TSSA result is almost certainly going to be yes.

One wonders what would happen if their referendum was no?
