The picking for online orders isn't always done at the store, in some cases it comes from a purpose built warehouse elsewhere.

Isn't that what the massive 'Tesco' by the M25 between the A1M and M11 is?
It is in some cases but click and collect are done in store I do believe also.
Mind you given how many times items are swapped with online orders it always amazes me aas I have never been in my JS and not found what I want yet for delivery I always get swaps - mainly of bfood cupboard stuff. Very odd.

No, it's because it's when they need some more cash after spending it after they get off the bus they boarded at 09:30.
I think large trolley shopping will be done by scanning your items into the trolley as you select them from the shelf. When you get to the pay station you'll just download the information from the scanner and pay. It's starting to be rolled out although it'll take a few years before they iron out the faults and it becomes the norm. Potentially there's a big time saving if you don't have to unload everything at the checkout and you can pack your bags as you go round the shop.
Brookfield Centre on the A10 at Cheshunt. One of their largest stores and round the corner from their Head Office. Agree it's a huge place and next door to a very large M&S as well.

The self checkouts at Coles and Woolworths here in Australia are slightly faster than an operated checkout for the kind of regular shopping I do.
The biggest benefit I find in the self checkouts is being able to pack my bags the way I want them packed, these days supermarkets don't seem to be able to train their staff to do this sensibly with all the cold items together, bags weighted evenly and so on.
Simples - ban supermarkets from selling alcohol, save that for pubs and dedicated stores where you can be 100% sure that every employee has had the right Responsible Service training.
You don't get to buy a can of tomatoes and a carton of eggs at the pub, why should it work the other way?
You can get Bacon, Egg, Sausage and Beans at a lot of Pub's these day's.
And even the crappy Aussie Lager is gonna cost £60 at least from a Pub when you can get it for £20 down Tesco. And how you gonna carry 20 Pints to the barbie from the Pub?

That's the place we get our home deliveries from when in London. For a warehouse of that size, it's surprising how many times they run out of everyday stuff like potatoes and bread and don't have anything to substitute.

Having queued up behind them countless times.
Stony Stratford branch of Nationwide seems to be a magnet for older customers with bizarre banking requests on most lunchtimes when I've had to pop in!
I wasn't aware they had - I choose Sainsburys Meal deal because it has the widest range of items available and is also a very good price. Could be something they do locally? I know that some stores don't stock everything, and there's been occasions like when the Manchester Piccadilly store briefly raised the price to £3.30 a year or two back (like everywhere else, it's now £3 again).

Oh! Saw it was £3.30 and assumed it was all stores, all the time, and haven't been back to a Sainsbury's for meal deals since. Must go back if it was just that one store for a short time!
Then again, the Co-op near me has put the prices of a meal deal up to £3.25...
The best meal deals are from Boots where they are £3.29 (I know some in London and other cities have higher prices which are extortionate!) because they have a wide variety of sandwiches, snacks and drinks to choose from. Remember getting a £2 can of Relentless, a £3 sandwich and a £1.25 big bag of buttons which kept me going when I worked next door to one
There were certainly some that had taken the 500ml bottles of Coke off the meal deal with only the 330ml ones available. Not sure if it is still the case

Good thing I find with the Sainsburys meal deal is that it is generally £3 everywhere. Best deal I've had is at Paddington where the 3 items arrived to £5.96 before discount.

The WH Smiths station meal deal seems to be very hit and miss, some WH Smiths on stations will have it for £3.79 (St Pancras/Kings Cross/Waterloo), some have a meal deal with a premium sandwich for £4.59. Middlesbrough has a meal deal for £4.99, but some don't have anything.
Not sure if it's something to do with competition with other food outlets.

Sainsbugs did some very nice festive sandwiches last year. I wonder if this will be resumed ?
One of the best things about the self service checkouts is that you can pay with a ten pound note of a morning and not end up with a pocket full of shrapnel (something many outlets seem incapable of managing !)

Maybe you've been lucky - every time I have done this I have very quickly rued the decision when I get a pocket and a half full of coins in return!
Oh dear - I must have been lucky so far !
Funny thing was I once paid a tenner for about £2 of stuff - it gave me £3 in change immediately and then faffed for ages as it was evidently looking for a fiver to give back. It failed and I seem to recall instead of giving me change in £1/£2 coins, it added a load of other smaller denominations too!

Change is a weapon that even the machines seem to have clocked on to - there's aren't many ways you can get back at rude/ignorant customers but giving them a handful of 1/2/5p coins is certainly one! I don't want the bloody things either, I don't sell anything that isn't a multiple of 5p so people who pull out big piles of bronze coins tend to go on the death list as I have to count, remit and even bloody bag 2 and 1p coins seperately.

I was in a branch of Sainsburys today, and was wondering if it's possible to hack the software that runs those annoying robots. My suggestion would be to add the question, "Do you want a flake with that luv ?" after "have you swiped your nectar card ?".
