It's good to hear that they are at least making some progress in increasing the number of 5 coach sets. Presumably this will be helpful as we move into tourist season.

Should have been done years ago! Especially when the rolling stock has been available but just sitting laid up doing nothing.

It's only taken six years. What an embarrassment.

They couldn't fit in some platforms at Inverness and the government withdrew the funding to move the signals. Work was done eventually but it took a long time. As the fleet has to go to Inverness for maintenance trying to diagram them when they could only use I think 1 platform would have been nigh on impossible.

Is there any additional bike capacity with the additional coach?
No - 74 Std Class seats and a toilet.

They are all TSL (Trailer Standard Lavatory) type.

The bike storage type is classified TSB (B for Bicycle), these omit the toilet to provide the bike spaces but are otherwise identical to the TSL.

It was madness that they never kept the TGS coaches, they would have been ideal for bikes and additional luggage.

I agree. It would’ve been better for the guard as well, rather than that cramped office next to the buffet, which in itself became a white elephant anyway.

Seats have been removed from coach c to provide additional bike spaces in addition to the ones in the former toilet making 6 in total. But the TGS was far better.

Meanwhile loads of potential bike space shuttles around empty in each of the power cars.

Not quite identical?

As shown in the photo below, they have an extra 4 roll-on bike spaces in addition to the space which is said to hold 2 bikes (this is optimistic in many cases!).

There are tip-up seats in the area which can be used if the bike space isn't required.

I completely forgot they'd subsequently modified them by removing seats and adding extra bike spaces. I think I was right in that originally they were the same bar the toilet vs bike spaces?

If they're never going to use the buffet cars on these then they should remove them completely to provide additional luggage/bike spaces, because at the moment they are taking up valuable room in that coach and it could be better utilised as storage space.

Converting the buffet counter to additional bike spaces would cause some impracticalities, e.g. how to load / unload bikes at the many stations where HSTs use single door operation.

The single door currently opened is the one adjacent to the accessible toilet (car B) and the bike storage area (the immediately adjacent end of car C).

The buffet counter is in car A (at the other end of car B from the accessible toilet) and it's not practicable to take a bike along the aisle of car B.

Impractical, or just too much bother?

Like with the areas in the power cars, they could at least be used for bikes that are travelling end to end.

(It would also be good to see the buffet areas actually used for their intended purpose though)

The buffet areas are currently undergoing deep cleaning and recommissioning with a view to getting them back in use.

Don't forget, too, that the doors at the buffet end of coach A are for emergency use only - getting bikes on and off would have to be through the gangway into coach B.

Indeed, Inverter issue now resolved too I believe.

As for bikes / luggage, of course the practical solution should have been found several years ago when they had the chance.. the TGS.

Who knows. The main problem has been an issue with the inverters which Wabtec were required to resolve under warranty and it's taken them forever to come up with a suitable solution.
How soon are thinking these buffets will be returned to use if at all?

I have to admit I've no idea what you're talking about. That something to do with the power supply or something?

Yes, power supply for the kitchen equipment. It was a new design fitted into a very small space and basically didn't work.
