Hello, first time poster here and looking for a small bit of advice. I have my 2nd part assessment coming up shortly and I was wondering how long the images roughly show on the Avavt Perception Test? I've had a look on the forums and seen times ranging from 0.5 seconds to 2 seconds being mentioned . Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, I’m looking to see if you are external or internal applicant? I’m internal applicant but still waiting on my 2nd assessment. Good to see things are progressing.

Hey, I'm also a internal applicant. I sat my first assessment roughly about a year and a half ago and I have my 2nd assessment this week. Hopefully you hear back shortly too.

Thanks should hopefully hear soon then. That’s good at least things are moving now. Nearly a year since I passed the DMI.

I’m also an internal applicant and have received a date for my second set of assessments. I have also heard some who have passed that have had their medicals. Start date of classes expected to be November, so great news things have started progressing again.

I'm an internal applicant too and I got a drivers job in August 2019. Start my course next week. Had to do a second medical it had been so long. I'm just thankful I didn't have to do the assessments again though.

For those who are still waiting just remember their backlog at this point is a lot. The job I got was an open and available position with a DI who was willing to work with me throughout covid and I still had a 2 year wait. Hang in there folks! There's hope yet.

Paper sift meaning the initial application? I got a 'no' today. I thought my application was quite strong, but would have been relocating from down South, so if they had lots of applications, that may have gone against me.

Hey, did you get your date for your 2nd test yet?, I got mine last Monday so yours shouldn’t be far away.

Looks like they're progressing the internal candidates first so hopefully still a chance for the rest of us.

Hi folks, Just a quick question for those that have been through the process. Are you able to tell me:

1. What is all included in the driver medical? (Not that I have any real worries, just nice to know what to expect)
2. Providing I pass my medical and lucky enough to be offered a position, How long does the training last? (At the training school specifically.)

Thank you.

1. Medical was drug test, eye test, hearing test, colour perception, measured BMI, any past medical history, reflexes, peripheral vision, balance, ECG.
2. I started in the classroom July 2019 and was looking at being verified around June 2020 before rona ruined it all.... so roughly a year from day one, week one to driving on your own. That could be variable though and I would err on the side of caution and expect maybe a little longer now, given current restricrions and stuff.

Folks....if you fail to progress past the initial application, is there a 6 month wait to reapply? (In the highly unlikely event of more recruitment). Thanks T

Hi Toastal, I don’t think so. I think its 6 months if you fail any of the Psychometrics but not the sift.

There’s quite a big backlog of Trainees at the moment but there will certainly be more recruitment in the future. Stay tuned!
cheers.

That's great news for you (and hope for the rest of us!) If you don't mind my asking, where abouts are you based? I think we were at the same assessment centre many, many moons ago...

Hi folks, I’d like to thank everyone for their input on this forum, it’s greatly appreciated. I would like to pose a few questions if I may. I applied for the trainee Kyle job, first ever application. It took me two weeks to complete and I submitted it 2 days before the closing date. I am currently airline flight crew and having previously worked on the railway in a past life, I thought I had many transferable skills to offer. I used what I thought were many of the buzz words for each application question, but I didn’t even make the paper sift. Having spoken to driver friends about this, it raised some questions that I was hoping I could get some advice on:

1. Could it be that due to the vast amount of applications, I didn’t make the cut because I submitted towards the end of the closing date?
2. Is it so that computers using set algorithms scan all applications and they are not read individually by the recruitment team members?
3. How can I make the sift next time (if there is one)?
4. What is the likelihood of further trainee driver selection later this year?
5. Due to ScotRail being nationalised next year, could that stop/delay any training/recruitment going forward?

Any help or advice on these questions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance, T

FWIW, I'm ex flight crew (cheers, COVID!) and didn't make it past the paper sift, despite submitting a couple of weeks in advance. Like you, I felt I had many transferable skills and that my application was strong, but also didn't make it past the paper sift. I think two things may have gone against me - firstly, that I'm based in London and was applying on a relocation basis (and even in Glasgow, I guess yours would have to be relocation-based too), and secondly, that recruiters probably assume I'll go back to aviation when the industry recovers.

Thanks Button Moon......the crazy thing is that after having had an Airbus strapped to my behind for nearly 17yrs, I’ve no intention of going back into aviation. I would have relished the opportunity of relocating up to the Kyle area along with my family. Hey ho......‘twas not to be, but this industry and selection process seems way harder to crack than any airline job!! T

Would any other folks who have been through the process either successful or not care to comment? T

Hey Toastal. I must say, with you coming from the airline industry, I’m surprised you didn’t make the initial sift as, it would be assumed, you have many transferable skills into the railway industry.
Just my opinion, but I don’t think your chances were cut short because a certain number of applicants were already received. If the TOC were audited on their recruitment process and were shown to be disadvantaging certain applicants whilst an advert was still “live”, that’s not great for the TOC, as can have repercussions if found an unfair process under UK employment law.

I come from aviation but as a Cabin Manager for a long haul airline and have just recently passed the recruitment process for a TOC trainee train driver, so it is well within your reach. I’m aware our roles are very different in the aviation world but the transferable skills are quite similar ie, following procedures, safety conscious, customer service etc

It appears most TOC’s will not consider applicants within a certain radius of depot, so maybe that is the sticking point if the role would requireyou to relocate? No doubt you have the transferable skills for the role so maybe would be an idea to apply to more local TOC’s?

Best of luck if you choose to apply again.

Don’t give up mate. I have a few mates in Scott Rail and the synopsis for recruitment looks positive. Like yourself I am diversifying from a career in aviation to hopefully one on rails! Should have listened to the advice years ago about flying for fun and not for hire and reward! Orra best

I wouldn't judge your chances by having not got anywhere with the Kyle vacancy, it's a tiny depot. I wouldn't be surprised if you were automatically ruled out when you entered your post code. Your efforts aren't wasted though, be sure to apply again elsewhere, reusing what you wrote.

Thanks Sniper...greatly appreciated. Any idea if there be anymore recruitment later in the year? T

It’s an ever changing situation. There are currently 5 internal applicants waiting on medicals and start dates for Inverness, along with the current 6 trainees so doubt there would be anymore there for a while. Other training is miles behind and the Academy is not yet at full capacity
