Dumfries has been prone to flooding in recent years

If you take Dum of Dumfries you are left with fries, something that usually acompanies a burger at Mc Donalds. the first UK Mc Donalds was opened in Woolwich, London on October 1st 1974.

Knew that all the company history guff they taught me would come in handy one day.

Woolwich was the first home of what is now known as Arsenal Football Club. These days, they can be found in the vicnity of Highbury (whether the new stadium, or indeed the old stadium, is actually in Highbury or not is up for debate).

Hedingham & District Omnibuses, which operate the Colchester Town services, have just been aquired by Go-Ahead of Newcastle.

Chester-le-Street's name could be (incorrectly) perceived to be an amalgamation of the settlement names Chester (a Roman city), Street (said to be the largest village in Europe) and "le". Of course, there is no settlement called "le", but there is a Stanford-le-Hope.

Hedingham & District Omnibuses, which operate the Colchester Town services, have just been aquired by Go-Ahead of Newcastle.

Why am I only learning this now?

P.S.: Hedingham are only #3 in Colchester; First and Network Colchester (ultimately owned by Arriva through TGM) are ahead of them.

It was only announced yesterday on their website!

Inverness

In Shakespeare's "Macbeth" Duncan's castle is at Forres. Macbeth's is at Inverness.

Inverness is the northernmost city in the United Kingdom (sorry to anyone in Elgin ;)). Truro is the opposite.

So I see :p

Funny you say that; guess what the children in the school class I'm helping at tomorrow have been studying in Literacy...

(They find it quite funny for the most part, especially the Witches and "ghosts".)

Deleted....after spending ten minutes research on my "supposed" connection to the Picts.....<(

Sorry... You know that I do sometimes remove mine to allow yours through, but I have been offline for a while since making that posting.

Isn't that Kirkwall (which has a cathedral)?

Having a cathedral does not automatically grant any location City Status as was once true (even then I'm not sure though); similarly, having a cathedral is not a prerequisite for a location to attain City Status.

There are 66 cities in the United Kingdom; of these, 50 are in England, six are in Scotland, five are in Wales and five are in Northern Ireland. Three settlements, two of which are Scottish with the third being English, have lost this status. In Scotland specifically, Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Stirling are cities; before 1972, Elgin and Perth were also cities, while Inverness and Stirling were only elevated in 2000 and 2002 respectively. (Perth are attempting to regain City Status this year.)

There are some very interesting stories associated with St Magnus Cathedral though :p

Yes, I do realise that you "let me in" from time to time and I am very grateful for your good nature on that matter. The problem was not just the time I spent researching ( learning more about the Picts than I ever knew before), but I was also taken away for a two-minute phone call from someone who was adamant that our home telephone number was that of an "emergency plumber" who had not called to do a job as promised...

Exeter also has a Cathedral.

West Bay is also located on the Jurassic Coast express link route.
Edit: There's a very special link between WB and Preston, if anyone can guess it I would be so pleased!

Preston is a suburb, or satellite village, to the north of Weymouth, Dorset, that is also served by the award winning Jurassic park Coastlink X53 Service thing.

You do know that Preston isn't that rare a name for a settlement? The Preston you know aside the most famous Preston is probably the suburb of Brighton immediately north of the centre, whose large park is the source of the station name Preston Park.

Anyhow, taking things away from the X53, some random nowhere place called Bath () is another Primary Destination to have only one syllable in its name.

As shown recently on Great British Railway Journeys (or whatever that thing by Portillo was called), Sudbury has a secret side to it associated with beheadings and the like. More commonly associated with such actions is Hampton Court, which is supposedly haunted by many Tudor personalities (including even Henry VIII according to some sources), in the London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames, whose main setlement is of course Richmond.
