The opposite of the longest distance thread - rolling stock that's still in use only. I think this one's a bit harder to do though.

Mine would probably be:
91/mk4- Kings Cross to Wakefield Westgate
142- Deansgate to Manchester Oxford Rd
144- Adwick to Doncaster
150- Manchester Piccadilly to Deansgate
156- Knutsford to Altrincham
158- Stockport to Warrington Central
170- Manchester Piccadilly to Huddersfield
175- Newton-le-Willows to Manchester Piccadilly
180- Hazel Grove to Stockport
185- Manchester Oxford Rd to Manchester Picc (yes it was after alighting the stopper that terminates at Oxford Rd)
220/1- Sheffield to Newcastle
323- Manchester Piccadilly to Deansgate
350- Hartford to Winsford
373- St Pancras to Gare Du Nord
390- Euston to Crewe
465- London Bridge to Greenwich
507- Hooton to Chester (would have been Birkenhead to Chester had there not been an emergency timetable.)
508- Freshfield to Liverpool Central.

Are these between 2 stations or 2 terminals?

If terminals then;

321 - Romford - Upminster
D stock - Olympia - Kensington High Street

As a haulage chaser I have done one stop hops on virtually everything, s in just about every case I will have done the shortest distances served by each type.

But I would note that class 139 is unique in that it will appear in both this thread and the other thread for everyone who has been on it.

170 : Glasgow QS - Cumbernauld
220/221 : Glasgow Central - Edinburgh

My list will be small in comparison and pretty boring but here goes:

319 - St Pancras to St Albans
323 - Five Ways to Bournville
350 - Stechford to Birmingham New Street
377 - St Pancras to St Albans
390 - Birmingham International to London Euston

Class 221: Birmingham New Street - Wolverhampton

Class 318: Same as mine in long distance ( Glasgow Central - Exhibtion Centre)

91/mk4 Wakefield Westgate to Leeds

142 Longbeck to Saltburn
144 Burley Park to Leeds
150 Leeds to Burley Park
158 Cottingham to Hull
220 Wakefield Westgate to Leeds

Those are the ones I can remember and are actually short enough to warrant mentioning.

.....
class 333: Leeds - Ilkey.........
I would guess at Frizinghall to Shipley, or Ilkley to Ben Rhydding for this one

Class 91 used operate a few Kings Cross - Peterborough services.....
170 : Glasgow QS - Cumbernauld
...
Can you get a 91 from Motherwell to Central?
And i would guess a 170 Waverley to Haymarket might be shorter.

I am not aware af any such services, but you can make these journeys
The shortest with a class 91 I can find is Newcastle to Glasgow
Almost all services from Edinburgh to Haymarket continue to the west

I have missed out some classes that I mentioned in the other thread, this is because for those types the longest journey is the shortest (i.e. only travelled on them once).

142: Manchester Victoria - Salford Crescent (then bailed and waited for a TPE)
144: Moston - Manchester Victoria
150: Manchester Oxford Road - Salford Crescent
156: Preston - Lostock Hall
158: Stockport - Manchester Oxford Road
175: Manchester Oxford Road - Manchester Piccadilly
180: Manchester Oxford Road - Manchester Piccadilly
185: Manchester Oxford Road - Manchester Piccadilly
221: Manchester Piccadilly - Stockport
323: Mauldeth Road - Manchester Piccadilly
390: Manchester Piccadilly - Stockport
450: Staines - Ashford
455: Staines - Egham
458: Staines - Egham

At a little over 1 mile (1.19 on the Quail map) I would reckon Waverley-Haymarket is the shortest scheduled segment for 91+Mk4, HST, 220, 221, 390 and a valid journey at that.

There are probably some commuter belt stations closer together on the Scotrail network that would beat it for most if not all of their DMU classes though.

This is going to have to be guess work for the most part. Which is bad. Hopefully it will all be correct, but the list is a... bit long.

Where more than one type of unit was involved, I have included both but have noted accordingly and provided an alternative answer. Also, only stock that is currently in passenger use is included (otherwise I would be uncertain with certain SWT EMU slammers!).

And in case you hadn't noticed, I have just copied the above paragraphs from my "Longest" post. Asterisks (*) indicate an identical answer.

Let's see...

43 Bath Spa to Bristol Temple Meads
57 Bristol Temple Meads to Cardiff Central *
67 Glasgow Central to London Euston (Caledonian Sleeper, with Class 90; otherwise, no record) *
82 ...doesn't really count! (York to Edinburgh, with Class 91; otherwise, no record) *
90 Ipswich to Norwich
91 London King's Cross to Newark North Gate
121 Cardiff Bay to Cardiff Queen Street *
139 Stourbridge Junction to Stourbridge Town *
142 Cardiff Central to Cardiff Queen Street
143 Cardiff Central to Cardiff Queen Street
150 Bristol Temple Meads to Parson Street
153 Westerfield to Felixstowe
156 Roby to Liverpool Lime Street
158 Keynsham to Bath Spa
159 Bristol Temple Meads to Bath Spa
165 Ealing Broadway to London Paddington
166 Guildford to Wokingham *
170 Edinburgh to Haymarket
171 Ashford International to Rye
175 Newport to Cardiff Central *
180 Preston to Blackpool North *
185 Blackpool North to Preston
220 Bristol Parkway to Bristol Temple Meads
221 Bristol Parkway to Bristol Temple Meads
222 Sheffield to London St Pancras *
313 Stratford to Canning Town
315 Romford to Upminster
317 Cambridge to Stansted Mountfichet *
319 West Hampstead to London St Pancras
321 Thorpe-le-Soken to Clacton-on-Sea
323 Wylde Green to Aston
350 Birmingham New Street to Stechford
357 Southend Central to Thorpe Bay
360 London Liverpool Street to Stratford

376 Hayes to Lewisham *
377 East Croydon to Clapham Junction
378 Dalston Junction to New Cross Gate
390 Haymarket to Edinburgh
395 Ramsgate to London St Pancras
444 Bournemouth to Poole
450 Clapham Junction to Vauxhall
455 Clapham Junction to Vauxhall
456 Clapham Junction to Peckham Rye *
458 Wokingham to Winnersh

no, I did this knowingly

when I was young, I really hated loud noises so I was not too keen on the deep level tube lines, I found the lines with the newer stock more acceptable, I was just using the northern line to avoid the bakerloo line for a short stretch, I got some really funny looks from the natives when I got off the train.
