Police believe a bus fire that broke out on a busy city centre street may have been started deliberately.

The bus became engulfed in flames on Lime Street in Liverpool opposite the railway station at 18:30 BST on Friday.

Merseyside Police said the fire was extinguished and no injuries had been reported to the force.

"Further reports and examinations have established that the fire may have been caused deliberately at present," police said.

The force urged anyone with information to come forward as a joint investigation with the fire service was now under way.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said a Stagecoach representative was in attendance while the fuel and battery supply to the vehicle had been isolated.

A Stagecoach spokeswoman said: "Our driver safely evacuated all passengers from the vehicle and there were no reported injuries.

"Safety is our number one priority, and a full investigation into the cause of this incident is under way."

Does anyone know which vehicle was involved? I hope the driver is ok.

Looks like 10551 from some of the Twitter pics. Everyone got off, driver double checked before she left it. Would appear it was started deliberately, sadly.

Seems that Enviro 400 FCEVs 89003, 89005, 89009-10, and Enviro400 MMCs 11639, 11641 and 11645-51 are still not registered with the DVLA yet. Could these be getting 73 registrations even though the hydrogen buses and 11639 and 11641 have provisionals according to BLotW (buslistsontheweb.co.uk) (Presumably 11645-51 do but not known what)? When you type the following registrations in the search bar on Motorscan (motorscan.co.uk) which are the provisionals you get ’Plate __xx___ not found’ suggesting its not registered:
Fleet - Provisional Reg
11639 - YX23OVM
11641 - YX23OVO
89003 - SK23CNO
89005 - SK23CNW
89009 - SK23COA
89010 - SK23COH

Why is it a write off? They are still building the MMCs and could easily repair the top deck, depending on the insurance.

There will be no ‘insurance’ as such. Like all the big groups, Stagecoach use a non-conventional arrangement more commonly known as ‘self insurance’ - so they will pay to repair the damage if they deem it worthwhile.

The floor of the upper saloon is a one piece unit that is integral to the strength of the entire bus, as well as forming the ceiling of the lower saloon. It's made of plastic, so, if it's melted, it's goodnight Vienna, and it'll be off for recycling.

Not to sure how true this is but I've heard that even before this Stagecoach Merseyside were short of vehicles so not to sure what's going to happen now, maybe now they've got the former Peoplesbus vehicles they can use them on normal service to cover the shortages.

They lent Peoplesbus a handful of buses before the takeover and had others in warm storage so I don't think it will be an issue at the moment. Schools go back in a week so that will see an increase in buses needed. I think they've also got the Maghull circulars from some point in the near future too.

If it was a nearly new chassis it might be worth it but it is 8 years old so the cost of removing the body and building a new one will probably mean game over. Stagecoach have rebuilt badly fire damaged buses before, one of the Scania E400 that was set alight in Torquay was rebuilt but was a relatively new bus at the time.

Some school contracts will likely have changed operator over the summer. Even if there's no Merseyside & Cheshire changes there could be a vehicle being freed up in Preston or Manchester that could cascade across.

Yes, the thing is though, Gillmoss and Rock Ferry school PVR will increase significantly as they have won a lot more new school routes. Wirral ones mostly won as Selwyn's have lost their Merseytravel contracts (bar the 811). MCSL need buses, not give them away.

On a related note, the first two Rock Ferry examples have been delivered, YX23OUD/YX23OUG with two more expected this week...

Ousted at Preston by the new Enviro MMCs 15467/68/70/71 have moved to Rock Ferry. 15466 has moved from Chester to Rock Ferry whilst 15596 has replaced it at Chester.

A poster on the Merseyside Dennis Dart has reported that new MMC 11679 YK73OWO is in service on route x1 Liverpool to Chester. 11679 is not due for Rock Ferry but is supposedly destined for East Midlands. Anybody any thoughts on this?

Steven Knight Media has reported some E400MMCs will be loaned to Preston and Rock Ferry until their new E400MMCs are all in service

The longstanding nonsense of three No1 bus routes is coming to an end on 24th September when Arriva Chester and Stagecoach Ribble, Mersey and Dee renumber the 1/1A Blacon Circulars to 14/14A at long last.

Chester will still have two route 1s namely the Stagecoach service to Liverpool and the Arriva 1 to Wrexham I think the STA 1 should become the 401 or the ONE. but we can't have TOO much commonsense in bus route numbering!

The source is the bustimes.org site and Arriva's own website. Stagecoach has the 14/14A changes but no service change notice YET.
Cheshire West and Chester had NO info as of 6 Sept , a bit stupid if they are instigating changes Liverpool has something equally stupid with the Runcorn 61 and the Aigburth to Bootle cross suburban the 61 meeting near Childwall Fiveways. Stupid because Arriva has only operated the Runcorn 61 since 2020 and the Aigburth 61 has its roots pre WW2 with Liverpool Corporation. The number 16 has been vacant for years and would be best but Arriva prefers confusion!

Halton Transport had a school service numbered 16 which no longer runs like the operator itself.

It may seem like nonsense to some but when you're in Chester, it makes sense and not many people get confused. Id actually say less people are confused now than many years ago at the old bus station as then the Blacon 1/1A was the first bus they got to. Now the 1s all stop at different places, everyone seems to have it worked out. It's just the council want to do it to get some Bus Service Improvement Plan money. Not because it's something that people actually want.

For the mods, this is on the Arriva website
Service: 1/1A: Chester to Blacon
  • Service re-numbered 14/14A, no changes to route or times.

My suggestions always end up like the proverbial brick and duck pond, but here goes. In a previous post I used the name Stagecoach Ribble, Mersey and Dee to cover the region. OK not all their routes run by these rivers. And I know the Dee is Afon Dyfrdwy but Stagecoach mainly runs near the English portion of the river. And finally, talking about Wales, Stagecoach didn't run the X10 from Kirkby to Rhyl this summer.
I have done research and there are no coach services from Liverpool to Rhyl only rail changing trains at Chester. There is a National Express 175 from Manchester and Liverpool to Llandudno but the nearest stop is Abergele.

I only mentioned the latter in relation to the defunct Stagecoach X10. Apologies for the A55 detour!

The Arriva 61 was a Halton Transport route until the demise of that company. However not for discussion on this thread as it is for Stagecoach.

Having a little explore today and thought I'd try one of the new buses on the 125.
Wow what a come down from the previous Scania Golds.

Suspension on the Trident chassis is appalling ( we've just reached Ringway in Preston after a minute or 2 from the bus station). The seating is far inferior and a horrible all over pale grey .

My word what was Stagecoach thinking? Are they trying to compete with Arriva for the lowest specification possible?

What a shame. This route was renowned for its quality.

Apologies if this is one of Arriva’s, (Most of the Arriva batch is done), but one of them has appeared with a 73 plate (not my photo):
