Welshpool is the first station on the Cambrian Line after it leaves Shrewsbury; Abererch is the last station before it reaches Pwllheli.

The Station Master's house at Leatherhead, an integral part of the main building, is now in use as the Archive and Library of The Railway Correspondence and Travel Society (RCTS). There is a plaque on Cheltenham station to mark the 90th Anniversary of the founding of the RCTS in 1928.

Two secondary lines diverge from the main line north of Grantham. One is the "Poacher Line" to Skegness, and Hubberts Bridge can be found on this line.

Gilberdyke is another station at a junction that lost it's semaphore signals within the last 5 years as a result of resignalling in its locality.

Hartlepool is also on the Durham Coast Line, which serves Sunderland and Newcastle to the north, and Middlesborough and Thornaby to the south.

The original 1841 station building at Hassocks was designed by David Mocatta, the architect of the railway, in a simple cottage style, but using the same modular system that he applied to other stations on the line. One of these stations was the original one at Horley, also opened in 1841 and yards from the present one.

In May 2013, TfL began a public consultation on two possible routes for Crossrail 2, one of which was a Metro route between Wimbledon and Alexandra Palace via Central London. A further consultation took place in June 2014 on small modifications to the 2013 proposals, which included an extension of the Alexandra Palace branch to New Southgate.
