Since visiting Stalybridge for the first time last year and sampling some meat and tatty pie and black peas (with a good pint of real ale to wash it all down), I've become quite interested in stations which still retain some sort of independently-run pub/bar or buffet. Just wondering where other people like, and any to recommend when I'm on a trip.

My list would be:

Stalybridge
Huddersfield (for the two bars and the station buffet)
Dewsbury
Wylam (pub 20 metres from station)
Crianlarich

There's the Jubilee Refreshment Rooms at Sowerby Bridge station which opened a few months ago. The owner is a crank and was sat a couple of bays from me on Spitfire's tour last Saturday - I did promise to visit at some point.

Tuesday night is (or was at least!) Pie & Peas night at Dewsbury, it went down well with a few beers!

Outside Exeter St Davids station there are two good pubs: the Jolly Porter and the Great Western Hotel. The latter does a selection of good real ales.

Or just up the hill 'The Imperial' which is one of JD Wetherspoons flagship pubs with its fantastic orangery. During their regular beer festivals this one often beats them all with a marquee on the lawn.

There used to be one at Kings Cross itself on site at the end of Platform 8, then you've got the another pub just before you get to the buses at the front of Euston Square.

Not forgetting Preston of course and certainly not forgetting Hertford North's nearest pub - just across the road, which you can do in less then 3 minutes.

Edinburgh has two pubs which I fully recommend, the Halfway House and the the Nor Loch - both are within walking distance of Edinburgh Waverley.

The Halfway House is the smallest pub in Edinburgh and one of the smallest in Britain, has decent LNER/BR decorations on the wall and supplies the tastiest food in Edinburgh plus their range of beverages are decent as well.

The Nor Loch is right in the middle of the station itself and isn't too hard to find, again it's not a bad place to meet up or enjoy a few beverages before travelling.

There's the Euston Flier just 10 minutes walk if that from St Pancras, Kings Cross and Euston.
Plus the Waiting Room just round the corner from Kings Cross as well.

Had a good pint of Deuchars there a while ago, although had to make do with a Burger King as they weren't serving food.

NOt sure how I overlooked this one being at my hometown station. Problem is with Central there are many good pubs a 5 minute walk away

Not good, get yourself back and have some! What time was this, sure I've been around 6 and they still had food on?

Oddly enough, I still have the exact ticket which I bought from Oxford Road at 18:26 (20th May), so by that measure I believe we got the 19:07 train there so after walking through Stalybridge to find a cash machine, it would have been about half 7 by the time we actually got in there, and I only asked about the black peas about 8 so it's no small wonder they'd stopped doing them.

Have you seen the clocking in machine? It goes too fast so at one point we thought we'd missed the last train back to Manchester

Going again soon though, most probably a bit earlier.

The cafe at Perth Station did quite a good burger when I was there last year, they also have nice staff (who check when your train is so they get your food to you in good time)

There's also a pub at Dundee at platform level - I'm not sure what it's like though.

The Three Guineas at Reading station's not too bad, and backs onto platform 4 so you can keep an eye on all the HSTs making their merry way down to the west country.

Opposite Batley station entrace is the excellent Cellar Bar, which I believe is run by the same crowd as Dewsbury's West Riding Refreshment Rooms. Excellent free bar snacks of pork pies, black pudding and bread and dripping last time I was in :)

Almost opposite Bradford Forster Square is the Shoulder of Mutton, which as well as being the cheapest pub in Bradford city centre, is also the only Sam Smith's one in the whole district, making it a great little place for a North Yorkshire exile like me to while away some time.

There are Head of Steam pubs in the stations at Huddersfield and Liverpool Lime St), and 2 more very near the stations in Newcastle and Durham.
They are run by a rail & transport enthusiast who also has a love of good beers, There's assorted railway memorabilia in most pubs.
(They also had one in Euston but sold it to Fullers a few years ago).

Unfortunatley the Lime Street one is absolutley awful. Such a contrast to Huddersfield, where im pleased to say i will be visiting this week. There was also briefly one at Scarborough station.

Whilst waiting between trains late one evening last week, Old Timer decided to stop for a quick pint, to slake his thirst.

£3.70 for a pint of Miller Lite at the Bridge bar on New St station. If I knew who to complain to then I certainly would. This is seriously taking the mickey, bearing in mind one can go outside and pay half that price !

Can definatly Second that one...Even better if your a London Irish Supporter :)

Also if your ever in Ballymoney, there is Joey's Bar that is also right in the station...and quite nice it is too...again especialy if your into your bikes, as the owners have former local hero and world champion biker Joey Dunlop OBE Bike hung up from the ceiling...Literally!

The station building at Ravenglass is (was) a pub that served good food. Been a while since I was there, perhaps someone else can give an update. Likewise, the Buffet at Lewes was good for food too, again I've not been there for a while either. I may be going there next summer, so I'd like to know if it's still worth a visit.

I can recommend the bars on Cleethorpes, Worksop and Stalybridge stations as well as the two on the SVR at Bridgnorth and Kidderminster.

Berney Arms - the pub of the same name is a 20 minute walk away. Certainly recommended.

Was in the Shoulder of Mutton in Bradford last night, and bought 3 pints and a glass of wine for £6.37!! Was very handy to cross the road for the last (23:20) train back to Shipley, for which I foolishly bought a ticket; clearly a mistake as absolutely nobody got gripped! A very full front coach on the 333, which is furthest from the barrier at Forster Square, but also furthest from the ticket collector. I suspect very few people had a valid ticket.

Sometimes I have to get the train home and find myself at Preston with time for a pint. £2.70 on the platform for a Worthers. Nothing to get excited about, but it beats sitting on the M6. :)

Had a few at Stalybridge last Wednesday. Got there around 18.30 & the place was heaving. Ale & food doing a roaring trade but still a very swift & friendly service. Although not quite so busy, a later call at Huddersfield's Head of Steam was just as convivial.

I've not been to the Nor Loch. but I can definately recommend Halfway House. It's now a regular stop for me whenever I'm up that way and I have the time.

That's shocking ! It really is !!! After all, who would want to drink Miller Light?

Seriously though, it is a bit expensive for a pint. I've had cheaper pints from pubs in the middle of London

I'm surprised Barnetby hasn't had a mention yet. The Whistle and Flute is right outside the station (although the view isn't the best).
