SWT have put out a warning from 18:00 Sunday for bad weather
The AROME peak wind gust chart shows gusts in excess of 70mph for inland areas.
The vast majority of people will be coming from a building, I would hope that people wouldn’t go for walks etc with their only return option being a bus when a large storm was incoming. You rather assume there's the option of a building!
This is all fine - but only if the “do not travel” warning comes from an authority high enough to be accompanied by an order that hotels etc must provide accommodation / food etc for those who are stranded (at the expense of the authority providing the warning), that no one may be penalised /disadvantaged for not being where they’re supposed to be etc. In other words “do not travel” means “state of emergency”.The vast majority of people will be coming from a building, I would hope that people wouldn’t go for walks etc with their only return option being a bus when a large storm was incoming.
But given the bus companies cannot do that, how can you expect them to send out their buses in conditions that are dangerous to run them, when they are liable if the buses crash and someone is injured? This is all fine - but only if the “do not travel” warning comes from an authority high enough to be accompanied by an order that hotels etc must provide accommodation / food etc for those who are stranded (at the expense of the authority providing the warning), that no one may be penalised /disadvantaged for not being where they’re supposed to be etc. In other words “do not travel” means “state of emergency”.
I'm flying from LHR to Helsinki early tomorrow so it could be interesting. I'm heading to LHR at lunchtime from Essex noting that GA have advised people to travel earlierI'm flying from Heathrow to Manchester on Monday night.
Could be interesting!
I expect that the company or body that makes that decision does so realising that they are also fully responsible for everything that happens if they make that decision - at the very least full responsibility for people trying to make return halves of journeys. Cancel things for safety reasons by all means - but accept that in itself brings a responsibility for those who are left stranded. But given the bus companies cannot do that, how can you expect them to send out their buses in conditions that are dangerous to run them, when they are liable if the buses crash and someone is injured?
Good luck sleeping if the weather overnight proves to be just as bad as is being widely forecast!Whilst most of us will be asleep when the worst gusts occur, I think we’ll be waking up to quite a bit of disruption Monday morning.
Yes I mistakenly thought it was last night. I now sit happily on the metro from Sofia Airport to Sofia. Success! ThanksGiving the storm isn’t until Sunday evening I imagine you will be fine unless flying on Monday.
Yep - it seems things have changed. Hoping that the GEML holds up in it so I can get to Heathrow. It looks like the storm will be following my flight in the morning.Met Office have recently expanded their amber warning to cover pretty much the entire country, with only a small patch still in the lesser yellow warning, mainly London and the immediate Home Counties plus Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk.
Whilst the intensity of this storm doesn’t seem particularly historic, what does seem exceptional is both the area covered, and the duration it seems likely to last. It therefore seems likely we can expect some pretty serious disruption from late afternoon onwards, pretty much anywhere.
Even my local Met Office forecast, which thankfully is still in the yellow warning area, has SEVEN consecutive hours of wind gusts in excess of 50 mph. That is very unusual.

I'm hoping to make it across to Heathrow noting there was already reduced service planned on rail and tube connections at Heathrow this weekend. The impression I get from weather forums is that there is some surprise that the London area hasn’t been included. I think it’s fair to say tonight isn’t going to be nice for anyone, with disruption likely pretty much anywhere across the entire country.
It’s probably reasonable advice for anyone not to embark upon a non-essential journey or outing that isn’t going to be completed by the late afternoon, especially longer distance.

If indoors with good double or triple glazing, probably won't hear it. Although those with poor windows will.Good luck sleeping if the weather overnight proves to be just as bad as is being widely forecast!

Reason for update
Update to include a larger area of England and Wales. Parts of Northern Ireland, northern England and southern Scotland are now covered with a new, separate warning. End time brought forward.
Im hoping Avanti don’t play their usual games cancelling everything north of Preston. Im travelling on 9S80 from Preston to Edinburgh with a lot of hope today, touch wood its not affected too badAll of Avanti's Glasgow-Lancaster services are only running between Glasgow and Carlisle. However, that's OK for pax between Lancaster and Carlisle, because "You can travel on the Avanti West Coast service immediately before or after this train with your original ticket". Except there aren't any.
TPE services do appear to still be running (1M64 Glasgow-Lancaster is currently at Penrith running 50 late), but I'm not sure how many people you'll wedge on a 5-car 397.
Hopefully not many people have tried to travel today, given the weather warnings and the fact that Preston-Lancaster is shut.
9S80 and 1S72 are currently showing as the only two Anglo-Scottish Avantis that aren't either cancelled or terminating at Crewe or Preston. Good luck!Im hoping Avanti don’t play their usual games cancelling everything north of Preston. I'm travelling eastbound on TPE this afternoon; anyone got any further info?A safety inspection of the track between Huddersfield and Leeds means that some lines are blocked. Trains running between these stations may be cancelled, delayed by up to 15 minutes or diverted. Disruption is expected until 13:45.
Oh dear. Those 2 will no doubt no join the list aswell. Hopefully TP to Carlisle is my saving grace9S80 and 1S72 are currently showing as the only two Anglo-Scottish Avantis that aren't either cancelled or terminating at Crewe or Preston. Good luck!
Some people have to go to work (to maintain essential services) and do not have other means of transportIf the company puts out do not travel warnings, and passengers decide to still travel, that's on them for getting stranded.
If someone gets seriously injured or killed as a direct result of the weather conditions (i.e. a service crashes into something), everyone will be quick enough to blame the company for not stopping services sooner .. they cannot win in this situation .
Agreed. Anyone know if some trains are able to go via Methley to get around the problem?Disruption on TPE in the Dewsbury area; an inspection of the line is occurring. No further info at present (Source: a TPE Guard)
