There is a large sign at the petrol station of Chichester Tesco announcing that it is ‘under new management’ which is visible from the railway line.

Does this mean it is being run by Sainsbury’s?

Always shop at Tesco's in the main but occasionally use Aldi/Lidl for a change. Always feel 'comfortable' shopping in Tesco's other customers seem more friendly and bump into people l know. Use clubcard got £22 in savings a few weeks ago - every little helps!
Sometimes on payday weekend pop into M&S as nice quality and hopefully pick up a short dated bargain. Steaks always good.
Haven't shopped in Morrisons since before COVID, liked their meat pies and deli options though. l bet the water spray's on the fresh veg counters didn't last long.
Avoid Sainsbury's as the multi storey car park is an awful environment (Bicester)but never been a fan anyway. Used to use Asda years ago but got fed up by the Tom Baker announcement's!

I first came across these mist cooling systems in France. There, they worked. When I came across one in Morrisons UK, it was making the veg wet and manky, especially some leeks.

Haven't noticed this in my local Morrisons, is it still a thing?

That said, I don't go in very often any more, since the takeover I've found they've really gone down hill and Lidl have opened a new store next door.

Haven’t noticed them in any of the local Morrisons.

The Co-op visited last Saturday had the full perspecs screens still in place which seemed rather odd these days. The ‘yellow stickered’ Hot Cross Pies were an interesting diversion.

Well done them on inventing takeaway pizza. What will they think of next? Delivery probably.
The Carrefour near Avignon TGV has an automated pizza machine in the car park. You pay with a credit card and it gives you a cooked pizza within a few minutes.

The one at Brighton is actually really nice. Was a little worrying watching the bar progress like a Windows update, but end result was very tasty.

Likewise - my local Tesco (Carnforth) is quite small, but still manages to offer a decent
selection and more impressively, almost always seems to have all checkouts manned,
so it's very rare to have to wait or queue (I hate the faff of self checkouts).

Funny you should say that - I was in Morecambe today, so out of curiosity I popped into
Morrisons to give it a try...

...and it was like going into a supermarket in a third world country! Firstly, I had to try
three trolleys before I got one which would go in a straight line without a struggle, then
once in the store there were numerous gaps in the shelves where stock of specific items
had run out and not been replenished, broken fridges and freezers, multiple lights not
working (or deliberately turned off to save money?) and just a general atmosphere of
neglect and malaise.

Are all Morrisons like that these days? o_O

The Morrisons local to me (five ways, Croydon) is not so bad BUT there are signs of decline. Bearable.
The main car park now has working lights which must attract a bit more passing trade - I used to hesitate and remind myself they were bound to be open, that's how dark it was. Irony is I have more recently seen the lights left on earlier than sun set !.

I believe Tesco is trialling Tesco Express 'Light' stores. They won't have any branding changes, but internally will carry fewer lines, may have higher prices and will have lower staffing levels.

It seems to show the continuing race to the bottom within Tesco, with staff expected to perform more duties like being asked to manage Whoosh for their store, which doesn't mean any extra money - just the 'status' of you now being able to tell everyone you have more responsibilities (i.e. workload).

Tesco also had these misting sprays at their "prototype" shop in Watford (the one you can see from the WCML south of the town centre).

Hmm, we must be (exceptionally?) lucky with Wrexham Ruthin Road Morrison’s.

It is clean and well-stocked and staffed by very friendly and helpful (and knowledgable) staff. The range of fresh fruit and produce is very good and the quality at least as good as M&S. We no longer use the poorer Sainsbury’s and I am not keen on Tesco etc. The immediately adjacent Aldi is less good, although the Wrexham Lidl is good. And the have toilets, which the new M&S lacks - but perhaps the beancounter’s happiness outweighs customer comfort?

But “our” local Morrison’s is very good. We have used others and so know how fortunate we are.

Have Tesco abandoned the Tesco Metro format?

I noticed today, the two floor Tesco on New Street in Birmingham (the street, not the station) is now a Tesco Express whereas it was previously a Metro and that got me thinking, I can't remember the last time I saw a Metro...

I use the New Street Tesco regular and never noticed it had been branded as an Express, so no idea when it switched.

Yes, they were all rebranded to Expresses last year. Doesn't seem to have made any real difference to the lines they are carrying or the pricing, but then there was always quite a lot of variety across difference Expresses anyway.

I think it just saves them having to manage another brand, and possibly lets them combine the management and merchandising for the two.

I think it was longer ago than that; according to The Grocer magazine when the changes were announced, 89 were to become Express and the remaining 58 became normal Superstores.

I was under the impression that a lot of the customer benefits of a Metro store format were legacy, similar to the Sainsbury’s Central format which were scrapped some time before, such as Express never stocked the Value / Basics ranges, and offers like Clubcard Prices when first launched were only avaliable in Metro / Superstore / Extra branches and not the Express shops. But both of these examples are long lost, with the cheaper products being avaliable on a limited basis and of course Clubcard Prices avaliable across the estate.

Behind the scenes, I believe the management structure was more akin to the larger shops, with different responsibilities for some of the customer-facing positions.

Morrisons cutting back, closing 52 cafes, 17 covenience stores
Shame, as I always found their cafes decent, at least on a value for money basis. Also I know from speaking to one cafe manager in the Highlands that they employed quite a high proportion of disabled members of staff. They also had menus available in braille, which I think is the only place I've ever encountered a braille menu.

I agree about the cafes. I have always found them a good place for a coffee.

I was late into using them but I enjoy the breakfasts. According to the published list my local one (only opened 12 weeks ago) isn’t showing as a casualty - I hope that’s accurate (in that cafes are not shutting en masse across the whole estate).

Morrison's petrol stations have moved to the franchise model and have deffo gone down hill.

I've recently had to complain at our local Morrison's store regarding blocked fire exits and displays covering the call points and fire extinguishers.

Their stores are also looking tired and then there's the constant obstacle course of pallets, cages and displays blocking the isles.

The obstacle courses of pallets, cages etc. aren't just confined to Morrison's, though; on my recent late-night visit to Tesco, I encountered exactly the same thing. I wouldn't have minded if it wasn't for the fact that I was regarded as an irritant rather than a customer.

There's a reason why larger supermarkets had night crew!

Indeed, I went in my local Tesco superstore recently, around 2000 (shop is open until midnight). If I had been using a trolley rather than a hand-basket I would not have been able to get around without moving many cages, positioned ready for re-stocking staff.

I last went to my Aldi back in November. I visited on a Thursday just before 21.00 didn't need a lot, it was obviously quiet at that time of day buy many full pallets were completely blocking some aisles with a lot of stock not able to be reached. Wasn't great if you needed a bigger shop. Regarding Morrisons it's not surprising they are closing some cafes and counters following what the other big three have done in the last few years. I work in their Hinckley store, to be fair the are doing some repair and maintenance work I just wish they'd fix the car park lights as around half done work.

I don't believe the misty cooling is - not in my local store anyway. It got ripped out when Morrisons got bought, so I presume it disappeared with the rest of the estate. Interesting to learn it had a practical use, I always thought it was more for retail theatrics, as in ooh it looks fancy it'll get people to buy more.

My local Morrisons is noticeably more cluttered late evening but istr was told they have less hours overnight. But it is sometimes a real obstacle course and it has got more noticeable but I am not sure whether it is me venturing in later in the evenings more often that I used to (usual time around 17:00 and OK then). There is generally more clutter these day however and a couple of times I have pointed out the rear fire exit is getting a bit restricted. It feels like they have been sent another sales display or whatever and have no where to shove it !. We do seem to get a lot of wet floors from chillers where there is no where for the condensed water to go (repeatedly blocked underfloor drains).

Yes. I vaguely recall the roll out of the veg misting and then gone so soon !. Always assumed it was a failed gimmick or perhaps a practical problem - running cost and/or where did the waste water go ?.

Talking of obstacle courses has anyone else noticed their supermarket being overrun by the delivery folks ?. They don't park their trolleys but instead just leave them in the middle of the intersections while they dash up an isle to get a few things. They will also cut you up - not that I worry as it is not my trolley !. So they are obviously moving faster than us average shoppers - lets face it it is a labour intensive business !. I know one of them from a previous job - he says he is just left to get on with it with less nagging from managers (highly likely). But the incessant chime their PDAs make should be banned. It is a young and enthusiastic persons job imo.

Just visited my local M&S Foodhall this morning but only managed to get about half of what I went in for, despite it being on 11am. Quite a few empty shelves where stock had not arrived or been replenished... a dark, fairly miserable environment with few staff around, and a self-service checkout located in a cramped area with too few tills.

I then called in to Asda twenty minutes later and what a comparison... very clean and tidy... bright, spacious shopping isles, and everything I wanted was fully stocked so I was able to get everything M&S didn't have, albeit a non-M&S brand. Plenty of self-service checkouts and no queuing.

Perhaps the Allan Leighton influence is now having an effect.

What I am finding increasingly irritating is the large queues of people waiting to use a self service till that takes cash, making it difficult to get to a vacant card only till without making it look like you are jumping the queue.

On the other hand, there's folk who go to use the only self service till that does take cash, then faff about attempting to make contactless payment using their phone, which payment method quite often doesn't work first time. Swings and roundabouts!

It's not too bad if they've got a decent number of cash ones - probably at least a third. I really dislike the Tesco trick of forcing you to go to the (largely unattended) till to pay cash, and wait behind the people dithering over lottery tickets or playing a game of "guess which cigarettes are behind door one".
