532 seems stopped already, the ex Gatwick only hv 533,535–536 still using
8532 has been stopped for quite a while, pre-handback inspections were done in September and October. Now the agreed remedial interior and exterior work is being done before Porterbrook accept it and the unit gets taken to Long Marston.

The railway loves wasting money. I know it’s contractual but those units are very unlikely to see service again I would imagine.

I must say that this is one aspect of the current set up that baffles me. My go to example is the four units stored at Ilford for, in some cases, years. They had to get them all back up and running for the end of the franchise. So why not fix them sooner and then they would have had four more working units to run the service with?

1325 Widnes to Wembley (16/12) is on it's way, nearly 2 hour late start. Can anyone comfirm for certain which unit is returning ? (419 has been there the longest).

A post elsewhere says that the unit being hauled by 57310 is 458414

Interestingly, on a new modern railways article it states that “SWR will retain a small number of 458/5s to meet growing passenger demand”

I assume this is just code for “they’re staying until they run out of miles”, or has something changed?

I thought this was the plan already they either get withdrawn because they run out of miles or replaced eventually by 701s

I am skeptical that 'meet growing passenger demand' is an issue in SWR given the incoming 90 Class 701s.

Nothing has changed, they’re just trying to spin it as a positive.

Two interesting points in these recent posts: If 458414 is "the last" 458 refurbishment for SWR" what has happened to 458419 ? Does it have snags as it seems to have been overtaken by 419. The other point regarding the "Small number of 458/5 to be retained", as far as I can see there will only be 5 such units avaliable (untill the run out of mileage), viz "Proper 458s" 458529/30 and "Gatex conversions" 458533/5/6. In truth, surely these are really filling in untill SWR get more 701s into service, not really much to do with passener numbers !

Your last two sentences appear to be an accurate analysis of this situation behind the smoke and mirrors ...

It looks like another attempt is being made to deliver 458414 to Bournemouth this afternoon, after yesterdays terminated at Branksome. So near, but so far.

5Q64 en-route now circa 60L. Its not far behind 5Q82 with 166201. The way things are going you could potentially end up with a 166 side by side with a 458 which in the past would have been a common sight in Reading bay platforms, but must surely be a unique combination for the Trent Valley?

Definitely as both are out of their normal boundary, so it's even more rare than in reading

I was wondering what's 5Q82 at first as RTT say it's a electro-diesel locomotive

When they say they are going to run a second fast train from Guildford to Clapham Junction on a Saturday and also during the day, Monday to Fridays, then I will belive that demand is returning......

Possibly a case of smoke and mirrors....running non stop Guilford to Clapham would suggest via Cobham, in which case it's likely the prime reason is route knowledge retention for Fratton depot.

Yeah I did a fast service via Cobham a couple of years ago, ran fast from Guildford to Waterloo though
