OBSERVATION

1)...The overnight travel relexation rule does not come into effect until 2300 hours.

2)...As the minimum connection time at Aberdeen station is shown as 5 minutes, we could have boarded the 2249 Scotrail service to Inverurie.

Agreed. There are also still plenty of buses operating. Aberdeen maybe very far up north, but it has a respectable bus and rail service.
Apologies, I forgot we were only at just before 11pm. For the record we couldn't have made the 2249 train though. I will strike through.

Having had a few days away in Lancashire with the family, I'm back, and it looks as though we are in Aberdeen, so will walk the 0.4 mile (7 minutes) to Union Square bus station. There we board the 2320 Stagecoach East Scotland X7, alighting at Montrose (Co-op) at 0043 on Wednesday morning.

Now it is time to claim the overnight travel relaxation rule, so we take the three minute walk to the bus outside Lloyds Pharmacy on High Street and there board the 0621 Stagecoach in Strathtay service 30A to Brechin (the bus stop opposite Bank Street on Panmure Street) that arrives there at 0641 on Wednesday morning.

A bit of a wait, but I just fancy it given the chance, we will take the 2100 Northern service to Whitby arriving there at 2216 on Wednesday.

There are no more services of any description in Middlesbrough (other than a sleepy 0025 NatEx to London), so we take advantage of the overnight rule.

The first public transport the next morning isn't until after 0530 (unless we want to head back towards Whitby at 0456, which I don't), so we await 1N51, Northern's 0547 service towards Carlisle, which we take as far as Haltwhistle where we arrive at 0803 on Thursday morning.

We await the Borders Buses service X95 at 1257, which we take as far as Hawick (Mart St, Morrisons) where we alight at 1413 on Thursday.

Interestingly, this service is publicised as Edinburgh to Carlisle, yet is generally run in three overlapping portions,
Edinburgh - Galashiels - Hawick

Galashiels - Hawick
Galashiels - Hawick - Carlisle
with only one southbound journey (daily) and one northbound (Sundays only) running the full length.

We have just 1 minute to get the next bus back on the 61, which may or may not be the same vehicle. Instead, we await Border Buses service 51 at 2008, having first crossed over the road and walked 207ft to The Avenue stop. We take this to St Boswells (Bus Stance) where we arrive at 2032 on Thursday.

Not wishing to miss the chance of a ride on the Borders Railway, we board the 21:29 Scotrail service 2T65 which takes us to Brunstane where we alight at 22:22 on Thursday evening.
