Is the 3 Vultures (Magpies) pub still there as that's where we used to get the bus to when spotting the depot in the late 70s/early 80s?Yeah, it's literally 5 mins walk from Brinsworth village centre and my house.

Wow. Memories. Had many a pint in there. Often in connection with a Northern Counties Transport Society trip.Is the 3 Vultures (Magpies) pub still there as that's where we used to get the bus to when spotting the depot in the late 70s/early 80s?
Just had to fish out my Shed Directory...Wow. Memories. Had many a pint in there.

Brilliant news. And all in adition to Masborough too. Long may it continue.Traffic to the new Tinsley container terminal is already up to two trains a day, one FL and one GBRF.
They're conveniently timed to pass each other around Rotherham Central at about midday.
Here's the pair yesterday (12/5/21) at Parkgate, at 1204 and 1207:

The chap I spoke to on opening day said 4 trains a day by the end of the year, one of which would replace a Masborough one. He also mentioned the possibility of getting a shunting loco on site! Don't shoot the messenger if it doesn't happen though.Brilliant news. And all in adition to Masborough too. Long may it continue.
They're going to need some flood lights, I noticed the other day when taking pictures, that there are none yet. As an aside the rest of the yard has been picking up recently too, and even trip workings to New Site at Aldwarke. The chap I spoke to on opening day said 4 trains a day by the end of the year, one of which would replace a Masborough one. Both! (one of the trains runs in the path of a previous Doncaster Railport service while the other is new)Is this Tinsley traffic new to rail, or is it diverted from other terminals eg, Doncaster?
Apart from the fact that it is 50% new and the other 50% better serves the customer's requirements.Suddenly not such a good news story if its just traffic from elsewhere then.
I think it’s still there.
I remember the pub, we got directions from the depot directory book.
Even in the 80s I think it was only 2p on the bus, or something daft like that.
It was 2p for child fares in Sheffield and this covered Rotherham too. It cost all of 6p, again child fare, to Donny from Sheffield.I think it’s still there.

Used to do Tinsley regularly. Good memories. I am sure I used to get the bus from Meadowhall to Brinsworth, but I stand to be corrected. Great to see rail activity there again.
The hourly 74a follows a similar route between Rotherham and Sheffield and uses Wood Lane bridge which crosses over the new depotSounds about right, used to go past Brinsworth Academy (or Brinsworth Comp as it was known at the time), down the service road and did a loop round the Airport estate. The bridge over the service road went over the far end of Tinsley Yard.
Igo back even furtherto 1969-72 when I was in digs off Abbeydale road . The 24 bus ran from the end of the road to the Three Magpies. Great for evening spotting, all the 20s, 37s 13s an d 76s. The 24 also passed one of my three watering holes in Sheffield Tne Non Polical Club on Attercliffe Road.I think it’s still there.

Thanks for the update. Sorry you missed it. I let it depart early between the TramTrain service an hour early as it was only going back to Doncaster Decoy.Your roving reporter writes:
Not much in the way of new infrastructure visible there today. No lighting yet, and the concrete loading pad still only extends for about half the site length, requiring the train to draw forward at intervals for loading and unloading. The stack of containers was much bigger than when I visited on opening day. Piles of new aggregate also visible the Meadowhall side of the bridge, apparently for more space for road transport parking/turning.
Today's inbound about 1100 was double-headed.
If anyone's planning a visit for a departure, be aware that some outbound trains have been leaving the terminal very early (an hour or more) compared to the first timing point in realtimetrains. For example today's 1040 departure:
wasn't visible from Wood Lane bridge at 1000 when I arrived, and one earlier in the week was on the Traksy diagram* at Shepcote Lane well over an hour early, although it waited for time to proceed any further.Realtime Trains - 414N 1040 Tinsley Intermodal Term to Doncaster Ept (F'liners)
Realtime Trains provides live realtime running information for the Great British railway network using open data.www.realtimetrains.co.uk
*They disappear off the diagram when in the terminal
Next week's timings have been altered slightly compared to last week - an inbound and an outbound pass each other near Tinsley E Jn around 1125.

And here's a crop from a maximum zoom on the Catcliffe end of the run-round loop, pretty much underneath the Sheffield Parkway road bridge:

Well you can't run the railway for the benefit of photographers! No great disappointment here, as I wasn't really expecting to see it.Thanks for the update. Sorry you missed it. I let it depart early between the TramTrain service an hour early as it was only going back to Doncaster Decoy.
Haha. That picture really puts into perspective how big containers actually are.Are the three long Maersk containers part of a cunning plan to hide the secret activities on the yard?
Standard containers are 40ft long, 7.8ft high and 7ft wide from memory. (Or something pretty close to that)Haha. That picture really puts into perspective how big containers actually are.
Given there's only 1 loading line and the general size of the facility I can't really see that gantry cranes are going to be needed any time soon. If they ever are, there'll probably be additional lines laid so the trackwork will be realigned anyway.I’m surprised they didn’t give the concrete apron a straight edge all the way along. If they were to upgrade to gantry cranes eventually would it not be better with straight track than the wobble half way down?
Externally, ISO containers are 8ft wide, 4ft, 8ft, 8ft6ins, or 9ft6ins high, by multiples of 10ft long.Standard containers are 40ft long, 7.8ft high and 7ft wide from memory. (Or something pretty close to that)
