And, likewise, I've been on trains where 'Edinburgh Haymarket' has been announced.

They can announce whatever they like, the station is still just called Haymarket! (I think it's East Coast who announce it as Edinburgh Haymarket to avoid confusion with the Haymarket on the T&W metro, just incase anyone was particularly geographically challenged...)

Cathcart Circle trains (ie, those going all the way around) call at Pollokshields East, Pollokshaws East and Pollokshields West. (To make it more confusing, there's also a Pollokshaws West, although it's on the G&SW so completely separate from the other three).

There's also Ardrossan South Beach, Ardrossan Town and Ardrossan Harbour.

On the WCML, you pass through Carluke, Carstairs and Carlisle, although there's certainly no trains stopping at all three.

I think for a while there was Tamworth (Trent Valley), Lichfield Trent Valley, Rugeley Trent Valley.

In the evenings there still is a London Midland train that avoids Stafford and goes Lichfield Trent Valley, Rugeley Trent Valley, Stoke-on-Trent.

These three are almost sequential: Glasgow Queen Street, High Street & Duke Street. Bellgrove breaks the chain (located between High St and Duke St).

If we take the "shared part of names" rule a bit more liberally, then there is the sequence of 3 'W's* on the SW lines:
Take a slow up from Guildford then the station sequence is:
Worplesdon
Woking
West Byfleet
.

* Before June '62 when Byfleet & New Haw was called West Weybridge, the sequence was of six 'W's, i.e.:
Worplesdon
Woking
West Byfleet
West Weybridge
Weybridge
Walton on Thames

What a shame that the name was changed.

Prior to the opening of Heathrow Terminal 5, it was possible to travel Hounslow East, Central and West, Hatton Cross, the 2 Heathrows, back to Hatton then the three Hounslows again in reverse order: 10 consecutive calls with the same initial albeit with some repetition!

Surely that's still possible? Half the trains still run round the Terminal 4 - Terminals 123 loop.

In another reality, where Marina remained open and West St Leonards had East Coastway platforms built... St Leonards Warrior Square, West St Leonards, St Leonards West Marina...

I can't let you get away with that one, other reality or not! If West Marina had remained open in would have, very effectively, occupied the place where any conceivable West St Leonards (East Coastway) platforms could have been built!

Oh, I had assumed that it was no longer possible to do, though that might have been down to an overly officious staff member insisting that I change!

How about this for a cheeky one. London Underground stations have the word "Station" on the blue signs over the entrance. The only exception I know is Uxbridge and even there the side entrance near the bus stands has "Uxbridge Station" above it. Of course the word station hardly ever appears on platform sign boards.

I think platform sign boards should be the basis, to avoid arguments like the Manchester one. I originally meant complete words, but didn't say so, but this is just a piece of fun.

What this has told me. It is very rare to find three consecutive station names with a common word which isn't referring to the same feature, i.e. the "parks" and "hills" in my examples are different parks and hills (and so would be the field in Chesterfield etc.), but Exeter, Barry, International for example is the same Exeter, Barry and International, for all the stations in the series.

Surely my four 'Roads' must qualify?

Since we're allowing international names and stations ending in Road, can I cheekily nominate the 1 train on the NYC subway, for:

Van Corlandt Park 242nd Street
238th Street
231st Street
Marble Hill 225th Street
215th Street
207th Street
Dyckman Street
191st Street
181st Street
168th Street
157th Street
145th Street
137th Street City College
125th Street
116th Street Columbia University
Cathedral Parkway 110th Street
103rd Street
96th Street
86th Street
79th Street
72nd Street
66th Street Lincoln Center
59th Street Columbus Circle
50th Street
42nd Street Times Square
34th Street Penn Station
28th Street
23rd Street
18th Street
14th Street
Christopher Street/Sheridan Square
Houston Street
Canal Street
Franklin Street
Chambers Street
Rector Street

They are all different streets, after all :p 36 stations all including the word "street" in succession. (And there could very well be a longer chain elsewhere in the NYC Subway)
