From what many have told me, the 1970s were grim times for food shopping
Butter in the 1970s meant Anchor (lurid yellow, NZ), Kerrygold (almost as lurid, Ireland) and Wheelbarrow (unsalted, pale and greasy, Netherlands) plus 'English Butter' (unbranded, cheaper than the others, basically tasteless.) Then came Lurpak (Denmark, pale, slightly salted) but we'd joined the Common Market, Brits got the taste of camembert and roquefort, manchego and dolcelatte, and butter of higher quality, so the supermarkets had to up their game. Despite what I've said about Wheelbarrow, once I'd tasted unsalted butter while still at primary school, I decided I wanted nothing but, which got me into the working habit like helping the milkman during the holidays, then paper delivery, etc etc. Must have been the only kid who spent his pocket money on butter, not chocolate!
