Heard the first "unless your travel is essential, avoid the area" style message at Trowbridge earlier.

Going to be a nightmare for regular non-football related travellers that day
Noticed that at Bristol Parkway tonight, electronic displays were advising people not to travel to Cardiff on 3rd June unless the journey is absolutely essential.

Fortunately I'll be in Scotland at the time,

Nightbuses from Paddington will be busy then. is Thameslink running properly? People will be after connections to the airports for early flights home (primarily, but not exclusively, to Turin and Madrid)

There are going to be loads of charter flights in to Cardiff. Aviation Buffs are being given loads of info for where to go to see them. When Liverpool played AC Milan in Athens in 2007 there were 3 747's on the ground at the same time at JLA taking supporters to the game plus many other charter aircrafte coming in and out of the airport. I wouldn't expect to see all of the supporters flying in doing so via London.

Plenty of transport for this game but when it comes to a dozen or so premier league games that attract a similar attendance (as well other sizeable crowds in other divisions) on Boxing Day there are no provision of rail services whatsoever.... and out of interest who is paying for all this ?

I used to work Boxing Day - you'd be rostered on about 1 in 3 of them (2 years off working them and 1 on) and because of the BRD entitlement in lieu they weren't too difficult to swap if you didn't want to do them.

So travel for football supporters from another country is subsidised whereas travel for football supporters who pay the taxes isn't ?

I would imagine the many many thousands of pounds that the visitors will spend has been factored in.

After the terrible events last night, I imagine security will be stepped up even more both at the stadium and station

Wales Online have said that there are no planned increases in security in Cardiff, although there needs to be, especially after last night.

Are you a security expert? Do you know what every public service plan was in Cardiff for the CL Final prior to the events in Manchester?

No, I didn't think so either.

Woah, chill your beans.

I'm only reporting what Wales Online said, if you re-read my post!!

Dear lord.....

Is it actually the case that the Welsh government is subsidising fans to fly from another country to this match? That seems to be what has been said above and it sounds rather unlikely to me. I can see that there might be some local transport subsidy.

In addition to reduction in booked services in the South, there are also reductions in the North with the Blaenau Ffestiniog Branch and the Wrexham to Bidstons being bustituted from the afternoon of June 3rd onwards. Also later reductions on the North Wales Coast. A procession of ECS will be running in the direction of Cardiff on Saturday:-

STP 1629 Shrewsbury Abbey Frgte Cs 4 5B58 AW Cardiff Canton Sidings 1634
STP 1741 Llandudno Junction 4 5B45 AW Cardiff Canton Sidings 1742
STP 1810 Wrexham General 4 5B40 AW Cardiff Canton Sidings 1811
STP Starts here 4B 5W66 AW Cardiff Central 1818

This is an RTT extract taken from Shrewsbury.

Ah good to see ATW putting 2 fingers up to those who probably couldn't care less about what is happening in the South of the country...

Brilliant planning by ATW there. People from Wrexham (and the towns in Flintshire and on the Wirral served by the Borderlands service) already have to change at Bidston for a service to Liverpool. However, on the day ATW have decided to bustitute Wrexham to Bidston to rob the units for Cardiff they'll be no services through the Mersey tunnel due to engineering works so passengers will have to change from a bus to a train at Bidston, then to another bus at Birkenhead. The least they could have done is extended the replacement bus service from Bidston to Liverpool.

No wonder there were talk of a devolved Wales franchise not being allowed to run services in England!

There is no bustitution in the south and on the Marches where there are mass shut downs of services during the evening. People with no interest in the game are tweeting ATW as to how they can be expected to get home after work. ATW merely directing them to a bus times website.

The inference was more implied to the subsidising of local transport (and apparent loss of facilities as well) for a thousands of supporters travelling in from elsewhere although if they are using a 'low cost' airline maybe all of us are subsidising them to some tune as well.
With the vast amounts raked in by EUFA for television rights, the obscene amounts spent on players wages and the vast sums made on merchandising you would think the 'business' of football could arrange and subsidise it's own transport rather than let that burden fall upon others - as well as recompensing those who will be put out by the changes having to be made.

Having recently travelled abroad to the other major European Final this season I can assure you there was no subsidising of travel etc by the club, UEFA or the local Swedish/Stockholm government. Quite the opposite - we (fans) were charged significantly over the odds every step of the way.

The only "subsidy" we got was when they let us on the local commuter train for one stop to get to the stadium for free to avoid a crush at the ticket barrier. (I'd paid £3.50 for the 1-stop, 5 min single journey the other way, so I think I'd contributed enough to Swedish Railways anyway)

Nobody has mentioned tonight's Women's Final.
Think it was normal service beforehand, with extra services or stops after the scheduled finish.

No - but the attendance was 22,400 vs a full house of c.74,000 for the men's final tomorrow. The men's final is also likely to attract additional ticket-less fans who just come for the atmosphere (and hope of getting a ticket last minute, or even "jibbing" [getting in for free]). So potentially looking at 55-60,000 extra travelling tomorrow.

There were several additional trains last night after the match to places such as Bristol, Gloucester, Swansea, Carmarthen, Ebbw Vale and various Valley locations, most of the latter starting back from Ninian Park close to the Stadium. There seemed to be some delays but not colossal as the match overran due to going to extra time and then to penalties.

Those locations make sense in terms of the women's final more likely to attract people from the surrounding area who wanted to get some taste of the action and who wouldn't have been able to get the (very hard to get) tickets for the main event tomorrow. The majority of clientele on Saturday are going to be fans from Italy and Spain wanting to get back to airports etc.

I'm not sure what the units actually were, but the Cardiff Bay Shuttle today was, in lieu of a single Dogbox, formed with 4 carriages. Super strengthening for a Festival of football being staged there.

There is now a page with a brief outline of the services to be withdrawn:

Totally unsatisfactory. Let us not forget that two loco hauled sets will be stabled out of use in the North, one in Crewe and the other in Holyhead.

All hail the Festival of Football, all those corporate partners getting free tickets to the game need something to do in between getting taxied from their city centre hotel to the stadium.
