You have to buy a new mobile ‘phone because 2G is disappearing. After you have had everything changed over by the salesman he hands the old one back and says you can still use it for some things, although not to call people. It appears to have things like a calculator on it, which I did not know: to me a basic ‘phone is used to hold conversations with people and that is it.

When you do get a replacement mobile phone i'd advise against Carphone Warehouse / DPD.
My Wife's just done her annual replacement and the delivery (?) was finding it had been thrown over the wall near the front gate. No idea how many hours it had been there luckily it was a dry dsy. It seems DPD are as poor as some other Couriers.
Amazon, Evri & Parcelforce always come to the door not the lazy DPD clown. Rant over.

You can't beat a good rant!

In our area the much maligned EVRI are by far the most reliable for deliveiries, unfortunately Amazon are one of several who all to often just leave the parcel and don't bother to ring the doorbell or knock when doing so.

I thought that 2G was remaining pro tem. owing to all the “smart” meters using it?

Much too complicated for me to understand, but there have been plenty of warnings about it going. Maybe all the meters will be transferred to one service provider and the rest switched off. I would rather not have changed as my ‘phone was still working well (the salesman was surprised at how new it looked, but then it just stays on my desk), but I don’t want to get caught without a ‘phone.

When a subscription was to a book club where they would send you a 'recommended' book if you did not order one!

Now subscriptions are everywhere making costs look cheaper by making them monthly/biweekly/weekly and monitoring them is like a second job.

In my country it will not be long for certain luxury speedy car owners to need a subscription to use their indicators or low beam headlights!

DPD delivered our Amazon suitcases to the same numbered house somewhere else. Neither would accept that the delivery photo was not our house!

When you begin to realise that there was a reason why when you were young you used to see old men sitting on benches. Nowadays it is you that has reached an age where you need to sit down every few hundred yards.

When you remember those pretty nurses that in your extreme youth you saw as prospective girlfriends and those same pretty nurses in 2025 who offer to tie your shoelaces after a medical appointment....
Oh yes. Way back then me being too awkward and shy. You know your getting older when those nice girls are now polite but not interested.....

……when the only people describing you as ‘fit’ are taking your pulse or blood pressure.

when you choose a pub because it serves great beer rather than because you fancy the barmaid, who's young enough to be your granddaughter anyway.

Until they see your house and bank balance!

You know when you're getting old when, instead of looking at new cars, you (er, me) are looking at motability mopeds to get me to Lidl.

Seriously; I'm not quite at that stage yet but I've had a glance, thinking this current car (petrol, 66) is probably gonna be my last. All depends on how long it lasts, how much insurance gets to, and any pesky tests when you get to 70 (I'm a 58 model - born in, not years!).

Or when you choose a pub because you need a cup of tea and the toilet. (Not necessarily in that order.)

Yes!!!

I know all the pubs and cafes round here that serve a brew for £1.20 or less. For those near me, there are four, maybe five, like that close to Bolton station. But the reduction of public toilits (or the cost if not with a key) makes it awkward for the elderly. Perhaps a system/law could be introduced where if a premises has a toilet, those with a radar key and those over, say, 65, can simply walk in and use (maybe a tray for a charity donation)?

To be honest I sometimes pop into Sainsbury's or Morrison's just to use their loo.

It feels weird to me drinking tea or coffee in a pub (perhaps that's a sign of old age too?). I will nip in and use Wetherspoons' , supermarket or department stores toilets without buying anything though.

By the way, anyone can buy a Radar key. You don't have to have a diagnosed medical condition.

I volunteer in a charity shop and we have a young girl also volunteering. I was speaking to her today and I said to her, what things were like when I was in school 53 years ago. :D :D How times have changed.

When it was rare to see a 50mph speed limit on rural roads instead being national speed limit up to built up areas which were 40/30.

Show her one of those mechanical calculators we had in Maths! Think you turned a handle?

Sounds like a Comptometer.
A company called Facit made mechanical calculators that could add, subtract, multiply and (in a rather fiddly way) do long division.

The joys of preparing a budget in pencil on a squared-paper ‘spreadsheet’ with a round ruler and Facit to hand. (Sigh.)

you know you are really old when you go in the main hospital entrance, look at the list of departments and realise you have been to all of them.
