I generally like the look of them, slightly more stylish than a Voyager.

I think the 26m length helps. Voyagers look a bit stubby, almost like a regional DMU with a fancy snout bolted on (see also the old GatEx units, most European regional DMUs with fancy noses, or indeed Javelins, which while they are genuine high speed units do look a bit like 313s with go-faster stripes).

Just seen 5X80 800004 pass through New Barnet running about 90L, crawling on the Up Slow behind 2K03 0524 WGC - MOG. Devoid of the Azuma Vinyls do look very resplendent.

Southampton to Bishop Auckland I would expect the route to be M3, M25 and M1. M40 / M42 head to and around Birmingham.

You'd be surprised. In my experience the vast majority of road traffic leaving Southampton for the north does use the A34 from Winchester and joins the M40 at Bicester.

I'm aware that 004 is currently in North Pole but as travelling past earlier it looked very much like a 395 was in there as well. It was dark in colour and the yellow on the front was the same as a 395. Can anyone confirm this?

Although nearly impossible to tell by the video, can anyone clarify if this is running on AC?

There's a clear pan-arc on the video, assuming they'd lower the pan if on other power (standard procedure as on Eurostar & dual pan units I'd assume?) then its on AC.

That looks like the OLE monitoring light illuminating up the masts.

There has been no recorded moves of any Class 395's to North Pole, would be a bit of a treck trying to get there too from any Southeastern 395 depot, and plus a 395 has no reason to be there. If anything it could have been a GWR Class 800 in livery, although I doubt this too at this stage. Your guess is as good as mine I'm afraid! May have to take a look myself soon if I get time.

Would the light be on of the pan was down?

Edit: Looked at it again in full screen and the pan is up. So the question should be - would they have the pan up if they weren't running on AC, given that it's at night?

Interesting, thanks. Presumably something to do with GWR more than anything then.

Not too difficult if the connections are there - They've ran up to Victoria in the past, so off at Wandsworth Road, down and around onto the west London line and into Hitachis North Pole Depot via the Scrubs lane link if it's still useable.

But of course this doesn't matter as its confirmed as 800004.

Do you know what this event is? I'm presuming it's like the 'Azuma' unveiling at Kings X. Wish I could be there, funnily enough I have a GWR Assessment in Swindon that day.

It arrived at Darlington on the night of the 23rd under Diesel power, however it did appear that the pantograph was up with the bright light on. So maybe just monitoring the performance of the pantograph?

It sounds like it's the pantograph part of the electric to diesel transition testing.

Would this event be anything to do with marking the 175th anniversary of the opening of Box Tunnel on June 20, 1841, and this 'Unadvertised Express' from Bristol Temple Meads to Paddington showing on realtime trains, albeit on a rather less than express schedule east of Didcot and terminating at platform 2? Wonder what might be parked in platform 1...

Sounds like something interesting, GWR have confirmed to me today in a tweet that something is happening at Paddington on Thursday. Although in response to your "wonder what might be parked in Platform 1" suspicion, this:

Although anything can happen between now and then, waiitng to see an STP schedule in the next coming days for an IEP move from North Pole to Paddington.

I don't know. When I left this morning, there was no information at work. I'm not in for a while.

Don't read too much into platforms at Paddington. These change on an hourly basis!

Didn't the Scrubbs Lane link close when the Eurostar depot was built? To transfer from Clapham Junction to the GW main line, the inter-regional trains were then diverted to run via Acton Wells.

As per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Pole_depot, the eastern site is accessed by rail via the western site passing under the West London line and the A219 (Scrubs Lane) at Mitre bridge.

The IEP project has reconfigured the North Pole Eurostar depot and there is now a direct connection to the main line at Ladbroke Grove towards Paddington.
As there was, of course, when the sidings were originally built by the GWR.

Yes they are, as many are being shipped from Japan with these fronts anyway, the rest are also being configured to have yellow noses. Although it wouldn't take too much of a repaint to change that...

Off of Wikipedia and my own understanding

GWR:
  • 21 x 9 car bi modes [801*] (originally electric but switched due to wiring delays)
  • 36 x 5 car bi modes [800]
  • 22 x 5 car bi modes [802] (separate to IEP)
  • 7 x 9 car bi modes [802] (separate to IEP)

Replacing: HSTs and 180s (and some Turbos as well IIRC)

VTEC:
  • 12 x 5 car electric [801]
  • 30 x 9 car electric [801]
  • 13 x 9 car bi modes [800]
  • 10 x 5 car bi modes [800]

Replacing: HSTs and IC225s

Then also, Hull trains will receive 5x 5 car 802s, and TPE will receive 19x 5 car 802s. There is also speculation that there will be a few more 5 car 802s for GWR to make up the difference by them receiving only 387s and no 365s.

*or maybe 800, not sure know

VTEC also have 30x 9 car electric [801] which are replacement for the IC225 sets.
