Reopening delayed by about 6 weeks due to difficulties working under COVID restrictions, won’t reopen until May according to a tweet by @PaulCliftonBBC

I’ve also linked to the story in the local paper, over in the infrastructure thread here:

A recent news article I saw quoting Adrian Shooter mentioned that some third rail testing was being done at Derby, presumably that would be the relatively short Bombardier te
Just saw class 484 on the M42 in Birmingham heading in the north direction basically opposite to Isle of Wight not sure where it was going didn't get number or picture as was driving and caught me off guard.
The sighting on the M42 could be going to Derby

Another 484 unit may be arriving (or have done so) as I understand that both cars of a unit were seen on the A34 near Oxford at 0645 yesterday morning presumably going to Eastleigh. Might this be set 3 (or 4)?

At this rate IF no issues during the mainline shakedown mileage accumulation four if not all five sets could be available by the time the line is ready. Again a big IF but it would be a first for Vivarail. Of course not having diesel power packs eliminates a lot of risks.

And if they aren't ready?
Does the line just remain closed?
I'm assuming they can't just shove a 483 back into service; they were falling apart as it was and in any case the modified line will presumably only be cleared for the 484s

They managed to run the line (sort of) using just one serviceable 483 at the end of last year, so I suppose they could use the one 484 that's already on the island.

But they need to sort out ryde tunnel because it is too low for the 484’s

Surely if either infrastructure or trains are delayed, the RRBs will just continue running.

The line should reopen with the timetable change in May, just at the point that the domestic tourist industry will also be able to reopen. The island will be hoping for a large influx of tourists who choose it because they can’t go abroad. A half-hourly service is intended and as the number of passengers travelling might require four-coach trains, four sets is the minimum needed. And that assumes that the new sets are sufficiently reliable not to need a maintenance spare for a month or two.

No but this is true- the project is delayed to COVID and this, it has been confirmed by numerous sources
Do you have any links to substantive proof that they do not fit? This has come up time and time again on here.

One post by some unknown twitter poster is substantive proof?

I can’t see anything about trains not fitting in Ryde Tunnel. They just repeat what we know: reopening is delayed and that Covid is either the sole reason or a major part of it. I go through Esplanade two to three times a week and have yet to see large numbers of orange-clad people scratching their heads at the tunnel mouth.

Didn't someone on swr's twitter say it turns out they won't fit, so work will now be carried out to rectify it?
I suspect they may have been talking the brown stuff, but if so that's a bit unprofessional for a customer facing portal to be dishing out misinformation like that.

It was linked in post #973 in January...
