Thank you.Stonehaven it is. Smooth surface being shaven and another meaning for pitch is tone.
Your floor @DaleCooper.
Crewe?Thank you.
Here's one for any toolmakers among you:
It's made from tungsten, centre drilled and turned.
Good try and I see how you got there, unfortunately it's incorrect.Crewe?
One last shot before I throw in the towel - Darwen?Good try and I see how you got there, unfortunately it's incorrect.
I don't know how you got that, your first attempt was better. Don't give up...One last shot before I throw in the towel - Darwen?
Not WishawWishaw? (only because of the two w's)
Hint: You start with a W and finish with a W but there's only one W.
Even I wouldn't use a vertically flipped palindrome!I think (hope) I might have (finally) got it! Wem? It's a 180 degree centrally turned palindrome.
If I'm wrong, the noose awaits!!
Marlow???????Even I wouldn't use a vertically flipped palindrome!
Hint: Chandler's creation with the tip cut off.
Correct - Wolfram (aka Tungsten) with centre (f) drilled out and the whole thing turned around = Marlow.Marlow???????
Do you know, Wolfram never even entered my train of thought (only W). Good clue. Very good clue!Correct - Wolfram (aka Tungsten) with centre (f) drilled out and the whole thing turned around = Marlow.
Your turn...
Absolutely - well done! Over to you, Sir.Sellafield?
Sellafield?
Absolutely - well done! Over to you, Sir.
South Woodham Ferrers? That station has been a great favourite in this game, for a fair few years !
After meridional indicator, this one -- we variously read, and hear -- runs, over two words, the vegetable / animal / mineral gamut.
South Woodham Ferrers?
Thank you.Correct ! "Meridional" = south; wood ("vegetable kingdom") / ham (animal) / sounds like "ferrous" (mineral).
Your floor.
Thank you.
I get the feeling that this thread has been hogged by a few contributors (including me) recently so I propose a time limited open floor expiring at 0900 tomorrow (26th) for someone other than the aforementioned motley crew (you know who you are) with a brilliant clue who has been champing at the bit to share it. If no clue has been posted by the deadline I will be forced to post yet another one.
We are what we are - a few Cryptos who rattle in our cages. It would be nice if we could enlarge our Circle to include more participants. Some Quiz forums seem to have lots of contributors - sadly not ours. Perhaps cryptic crosswords are not the "in thing" any more? Does anyone have any ideas how we might attract new members to our Club?Thank you.

Gosh darn knew that would be easy…all I could think of.Tamworth?
Maybe a few links to ‘how to’ articles/videos pinned to the top of the thread? We are what we are - a few Cryptos who rattle in our cages.
