I think this just furthers my point.

Might we know why it can’t be extended? I’d like to think it’s because the knackered, troublesome yet very loveable things have a future somewhere else (I know the discussion of who and where is speculative so we’ll leave that in its own thread) but of course no one’s announced anything, publicly anyway.
A future elsewhere is what has been said to be the reason that the 2 cars lease can't be extended. Not sure about the 3s yet. There's rumours, very similar to the ones here to be honest but nothing official.

Keeping the 175s will cause more hassle than letting them go.
They are not reliable anymore, whether that is down to recent inferior maintenance or they are just knackered is a different topic.
CAF are having to try and introduce the new 197s and maintain the current ones, of which near enough outweigh the numbers of 175s. The 197s are throwing up their own reliability issues.

TFW messed up the 175 transition from the beginning but they are too deep in it now to keep the 175s going any long than needs be.
There's on average 7-8 175s in service but the irregularity of which ones shows that they aren't managing to stay reliable enough before they fail.
Also CAF don't really have the space to manage 2 separate types of fleets. I can see TFW getting rid of the remaining 175s ASAP once the latest batch of 197s actually arrive. In the meantime expect to see more 15x on the Marches until the routes are cleared.

I think there's also the problem of failed 175s only able to be rescued by another 175? With fewer about, potentially long delays, as happened recently when one ran out of fuel at Bridgend. Another reason TfW will want them gone ASAP.

Reluctantly it seems that the 175s fo indeed need to be wound down. Hopefully Northern are happy lending their units for a while longer yet.

Dogboxes are everywhere.

IMG_1962.jpeg
The Quintuple 15:05 to Carmarthen (from Man Picc)

IMG_1947.jpegIMG_1954.jpeg
The Triple 14:14 to Newport (from Swansea)

We also have a double 153 off to Ebbw Vale, a double 153 left recently for Manchester, and a double 153 will soon form a Milford Haven service.

Yet another triple 153 has just arrived at Cardiff Central, terminating from Manchester Picc. 329/382/926

Earlier’s quintuple 153 was actually 318/968 from Manchester and 353/367/921 from Newport to Carmarthen next to each other, actually two separate trains that then coupled and uncoupled to each other before leaving as two different separate trains.

We have just had SEVENTEEN 153s through Cardiff in the past two hours…

153329+153382+153926 on Manchester Cardiff
153353+153367+153921 on Cardiff Carmarthen
153318+153968 on Cardiff Fishguard
153325+153361 on Milford Manchester
153369+153935 on Maesteg Cheltenham
153327+153914 on Cardiff Ebbw Vale
153910 on City line
153922 on City line
I don’t know what the third City line 153 is

and this morning 153333+153362+153913 terminated in from the Marches line

Meanwhile, the three remaining TfW 170s are the unhealthiest sounding Turbostars I’ve ever heard. Absolutely awful rasping sound when accelerating… reminds me of a Chesty cough…

I noticed a lot of 153 on platforms 3/4 when I arrived at Central for my 197 to Newport but I didn't take much notice of where they were going or come from as I was looking for my platform for the 197. For some reason they put the Westbury train up first and the Holyhead was was nowhere to be seen but then it appeared fortunately. Wouldn't have been amused if they cancelled it !

For the Royal Welsh Show. But the additional train from Cardiff to Builth Road is cancelled due to a shortage of train crew!
Thats really poor! Considering this event is on 4 days out of 365! You would think they would prioritise this.

I wonder how train crew works for this run. I assume it must be Carmarthen crew as they sign the HOWL line (Southern end). So i guess they have to get them to Cardiff on another service or could a Cardiff crew work it to Port Talbot? Cant think of how else they could do it as it goes via the district line so no opportunity to change at Swansea or Llanelli Either way it usually does run so its very poor it hasn't! It doesn't exactly inspire confidence to travel there by train!

A triple 153 on the Heart of Wales today, if the data feeds are to be believed.

Think I asked this on another topic without a response, but are TfW retaining enough 153s to allow the services to be strengthened to 3-car for the show in future years?

Aye, it certainly isn't very encouraging.

It's an extra service, so based on overtime being taken, on the first week of the school holidays.
It'll be last to be covered, if at all.

Not what you'd call superior motive power with triple Dogboxes

175112 is on Ebbw Vale services today.
175009 was on Ebbw Vale services yesterday.

The 1704 Pembroke from Manchester (truncated at Carmarthen today due to shortage of stock) has left an ENORMOUS amount of people behind with no other train beyond Swansea for two hours. This was a good five/ten minutes before departure time, but by 1702 there were so many people they weren’t letting on as the 150 just wasn’t enough. This is a product of TfW’s lack of stock and the lack of GWR due to the strike shenanigans.

Infuriating while a 3-car 175 is on Ebbw Vale.

Any further updates on 150242 and 279? Are they being repaired, awaiting repairs or is it curtains?

Anyone know what has happened to 153312 it hasn't been out since 15th March.

Is there any more news on a new home for the class 175s.

There is a dedicated thread for future speculation regarding the 175s there's rumoured to be a home but nothing concrete.

Shows as on an exam and awaiting parts.

Until either the leasing company or a new operator make an announcement there's nothing official. The first leases to TfW end at the end of August so until then it's unlikely much would be said.

From tomorrow, the South Wales services from Manchester are booked to look like this, I believe:

0630 Cardiff Central (67+MK4)
0730 Carmarthen via Cardiff Central (15x or 175)
0830 Cardiff Central (67+MK4)
0930 Carmarthen via Cardiff Central (15x or 175)
1030 Cardiff Central (67+MK4)
1130 Carmarthen via Cardiff Central (15x or 175)
1230 Cardiff Central (67+MK4)
1330 Tenby via Cardiff Central (15x or 175)
1430 Cardiff Central (67+MK4)
1530 Carmarthen via Cardiff Central (15x or 175)
1630 Swansea via Cardiff Central (67+MK4)
1730 Cardiff Central (15x or 175)
1830 Cardiff Central (67+MK4)
1930 Cardiff Central (197)
2030 Cardiff Central (197)

But one diagram will most often be a Sprinter at present, as although it’s a MK4 service on paper I don’t believe enough sets are available at the moment. This was 0830 & 1630 last week, although I’m fairly sure it was a different one before as I’ve regularly had a MK4 on the 1630.

On return from Cardiff to Manchester:

0435 Starts here (67+MK4)

0538 Starts here (15x or 175)
0635 from Swansea (67+MK4)
0750 from Carmarthen (15x or 175)
0849 Starts here (67+MK4)
0953 from Milford Haven (15x or 175)
1052 Starts here (67+MK4)
1153 from Milford Haven (15x or 175)
1249 Starts here (67+MK4)
1349 from Milford Haven (15x or 175)
1449 Starts here (67+MK4)
1549 Starts here (197)
1649 Starts here (67+MK4)

1753 from Milford Haven (15x or 175)
1857 Starts here (67+MK4)
2005 Starts here (15x or 175)

Fairly sure the 0830 and 1630 aren't Mk4 for a bit, it's the 1030 and 1830 that are for now.
