What was 1Z63 on which you had 33 061 in 1984?
33061 HG 1Z63 1618 Cardiff Central - London Paddington (Reading to London Paddington)

According to my notes it was an additional (relief) train.

017 was my lowest-mileage Scottish 47/0 and I needed a return journey to clear it for 100 miles. Standing on Carstairs station for 3 hours at 8.30am in February didn't seem like a fantastic plan. So...

Re post #6,573 Class 33 to London Paddington. ISTR reading somewhere there were a few months during 1984 where Cromptons finding their way to Paddington happened more than once.

861 (GM F59 PH 1992) SCAX331 1443 San Bernardino AMTK - Los Angeles Union (San Bernardino AMTK to Los Angeles Union)

Then Metro Red and Blue lines from Los Angeles Union to Long Beach and return to view the Queen Mary liner and do some shopping in Wallmarts. It dawned upon me on the way back that I had underestimated how long it would take me to get back to Union station. PANIC!!!! And sure enough I arrived at Union station after the Chief had departed. I got stopped from running up the platform ramp from the subway and got told I'd missed the departure but "if you go up the next platform ramp you'll be able to catch it". Thankfully on reaching the platform indicated the train could be seen backing onto a set of mail road/rail vehicles. Phew! Fortunately a coach door was opened so I could scramble on. I wouldn't miss my flight home after all! I had to wait to find out what the locos were on the front until a designated leg stretch stop at Lamy NM lunch time on day two of the 43 hour journey. I did work out there were four locos hauling the train by counting the ditch lights as the train headed up Cajon Pass in the darkness of the late evening.

4*GE P42B (
199+44+14+90) AMTK#4 Southwest Chief 1845 Los Angeles Union - Chicago Union (Los Angeles Union to Chicago Union)

Two nights on the train and 4235km or thereabouts off each loco. I had a dodgy tummy by the time I got off the train. Not long before the train arrived in the Windy City I had a bout of wind of my own. After using the facilities in the train I returned to my cabin. I heard the door of the toilet being opened followed by a guy muttering " Smells like the Pope has crawled in here and died!!!" to the coach attendant.<D)

Why allocate a Generator on a service back to Newcastle when you can send it as far from home as possible!
Completely standard. Not long after this one, I was at Liverpool after 47411, fresh off Crewe overhaul, had arrived light engine allocated to 1E88 to get it back to Gateshead.

They sent it to Poole as well.

I used to think that perhaps a depot would send a loco that was not theirs anyway on a working that otherwise tended to be how they lost their own locos.

The D9000 move was a Birmingham - Leeds footex via Wolverhampton, Stafford, Stoke, Stockport, Stalybridge & Huddersfield which ended up with far more cranks than football fans.

I was at the Leeds-Brum game that day, and was standing on Leeds station when it arrived. Having lost track of the railway scene at that point, I was somewhat bemused!

It may have been your last run with 86 429 too. It was destroyed in the Colwich collision a few months later.

Yes, it was. Indeed, it was the only time I had it with that number, having previously had it a few times as 86329 (but not, it appears, as 86029).

Must have been half-term again, and we're off to Chester to visit the relatives. Well, my mum is. I'm off to WBQ to do some spotting.

There are EMU drags out of Liverpool Street today and there's a new 47 for me there. Yet another Stratford 47 on the Nuneaton drag, no wonder there's none on the GE when I go there...

Having escaped from it's daily outings on the Newcastle to Sunderland vans.
The escape was in October 1980, a long time before February 1985. 31418 was a March loco (10/80-12/87) for longer than it was a Gateshead loco (04/76-10/80).

31418 was a real paradox as a headcode disc, ETH loco. Not only did it have to heat a train, it had all those fairground bulbs on the front to light up and then had to move trains too. ;)

By the time I caught up with it in 1989, in Preston, it was also sporting white-painted "headcode discs" at one end, plus the white stencilled name Boadicea.

Part of Operation "406 is lagging badly behind the other seven Generators in terms of mileage".
47406 1M26 Newcastle-Liverpool
47411 1E16 Liverpool-York
47402 1M19 York-Leeds
47406 1E93 Leeds-Newcastle

And so we've reached the day where I started posting all these interminable lists of 47s. However, I've rescued at least one moves book from the loft and I did miss quite a few days out previously, so you haven't escaped yet :D

The Boadicea name is from 31418's East Anglian heritage. Boadicea was Queen of the Iceni tribe who lived in East Anglia and rebelled against the Romans.

That makes sense. I did wonder what strange tenuous link she had to West Lancashire. Maybe the local 31/4s should have been named after long term inmates at HMP Preston.

Queen of the Iceni. Now i know where the JDW in Norwich gets the name from.
