Looks promising.
Is there a completion or start date for the new services yet?
Latest story is that High Street, the road between that and North Station closes this weekend for 6 months for the new underpass to go in. Overnight closures of Talbot Road are planned to start at the same time to do the overhead, sort out the traffic lights, signs, and any trivial bits and bobs. Opening is pencilled in for the same time as the underpass opens at the latest, so end of the year. Only 2 years late!

Is a heritage tram able to travel up the extension recreating the old North Station journey.

Speaking to one of the guards on the trams earlier regarding the new extension to North Station and they reckon that the routes will be...

Fleetwood Ferry - Blackpool North Station
Blackpool North Station - Starr Gate
(same tram)

Starr Gate - Blackpool North Station
Blackpool North Station - Fleetwood Ferry
(same tram)

Pleasure Beach - Little Bispham (shuttles)

Pleasure Beach - Tower / Cabin / Bispham / Fleetwood Ferry (heritage)

Plus there may be some additional peak services from Fleetwood Ferry to Starr Gate avoiding Blackpool North.

Also good to see that some of the new ticket machines are in use albeit contactless cards still can't be used until next month.
It makes sense to give the entire network a direct link to North station and thus to the rail network, which wasn't planned on the last service pattern I remember seeing. North is also reasonably placed for some parts of the centre where the Promenade stops are less convenient. I'm guessing that the wintertime service will be just the route reversing at North.

Are the tram stations going to get any form of ticket machine soon?

It's a bit strange how the Blackpool Trams seem to be behind the times by not offering ticket machines on the tram stops.

No. They have just started testing their new Ticketer handheld machines which are soon able to accept credit and debit cards (contactless). The machines run on the same system that the buses use. It is hoped that credit and debit cards will be active by the August kids holidays.

Currently the service pattern is Starr Gate to Fleetwood Ferry every 12 minutes during the day, with additional services Pleasure Beach to Little Bispham on weekends. The additional services are operated by the Flexity trams as well as the altered double deck heritage vehicles.

There is little point in putting ticket machines on the platforms. The Fylde Coast's unique combination on wind, rain, sun and sand mean that when they enquired about machines as part of the upgrade, no company would quote as they couldn't guarantee their machines would work reliably. Most locals use a phone app, as do a lot of tourists, conductors can easily sweep up the rest.

Should have done a program similar to Oyster cards encouraging local shops to sell them.

Apparently this is on the cards in the future including tap-on-tap-off contactless cards for short journeys now that it's a standard fare across the entire tramway network.

It is likely to be an ITSO based scheme and will be multi operator so can be used on the trams, Blackpool Transport buses, Stagecoach buses and other buses in Lancashire except for Catch22 Coastliner.

Surely with one fare it will be tap on only?

Somebody mentioned at the Centenary weekend that tap-on-tap-off will have some cheaper fares for "short hop" journeys when North opens. I think its designed for holiday makers going to the hotels in the "Central Zone" (Pleasure Beach - Gynn Square).

When/why did they switch to a standard fare? Convenient for the passenger, but it means that longer distance journeys are a bargain

God forbid someone tries to offer actually good-value public transport with a simple to understand fare system in this country...

Was last year sometime I think. Was meant to make the trams more user friendly. The bus only has two zones now too (except the Fleetwood-Preston services - see attached fare table).

As passengers we all want a bargain, but that also has to be balanced with getting in revenue

The bus system has 2 zones, so the same journey from Fleetwood to Blackpool now costs more on the bus than it does on the tram

Which is surely the intention - ie to encourage use of the higher capacity trams for longer journeys, and the bus for shorter hops.

:) I had to smile at the "Rover24" £1 day ticket for dogs listed on their website!

One of the "large door" double deck cars was out today on normal service (not heritage) plying it's way up and down from Starr Gate to Fleetwood Ferry
Seen that tram too. Was going the other direction and kept missing it. Do you need a different ticket for it?

No they are in regular service so can be used on a standard day ticket etc. But check with the guard. Some are the heritage services not general.

Quick update regarding the ticket machines on board:

The larger Ticketer handheld machines have been scrapped due to an unusual large plastic covering on the contactless reader making them unusable as they can't read certain credit or debit cards, so they have gone with a smaller version of the Ticketer machine which will be launched exclusively on Blackpool Trams. Some are already in use for testing (without the contactless functionality).

Images below show the different type of machines being used (the newer smaller Ticketer image is a stylised image).

Due to overhead cables coming down, all trams are not running.
Further updates will be available as we get more information.
Apologies for the inconvenience caused.

Blackpool Trams are currently suspended due to an overhead line coming down, but surely the whole network doesn't need to be closed? Can they not close it in sections? From what I understand the problem is by Pleasure Beach loop and a heritage tram has brought the lines down, so surely they can run from Tower to Fleetwood?

That depends on where the power supply is fed from, and where the switches are to isolate sections of the wires.

From photos on Facebook, it was flexity 002 with a broken pantograph, towed back to Starr Gate by 014

That's weird.
A modern tram en route to Fleetwood Ferry passed me at North Pier around 14:35, somehow the pantograph struck something where the Blackpool North extension joins the main line, resulting in the pantograph falling backwards. The driver was unaware of this and just thought he had lost power, with passengers just boarding as normal. Obviously the tram wasn't going anywhere soon.
A tram passed in the opposite direction as normal, this stopped at the next stop but didn't proceed, so assumed that the power was switched off for some reason.
Tram service had resumed by 17:35 so wasn't aware of any other incident.

There were a couple of problems yesterday that caused the full suspension. There was a problem by the Pleasure Beach loop and a number of issues by Festival House caused Gynn Sq to Manchester Sq to be shut down at the same time. Apparently there weren't enough trams, or staff, north of the issues to run anything better than very, very skeleton service but buses were available to run a full service.

Seen that a new timetable starts today. The 15 minute Little Bispham service seems to be moving to evenings only, for the illuminations. How on earth the 15 minute daytime Fleetwood service will cope, at weekends especially, is beyond me. Seems like a rather stupid decision, even in late July, many trams were full and that was with a 7/8 minute headway. So much lost revenue and so many angry non-passengers.

The new timetable has been mentioned a few times in the depot and also on the trams by the staff.

Blackpool is busier than ever and reducing the day timetable to a 15 min frequency from SGTE to FFRY is ridiculous and running the peak shuttle from SGTE to LBIP in the evening is going to be carnage, especially as the evening heritage trams will be out too.
