Written by an Australian I assume.

Let's just say I disagree with everything you've written which is insulting and wrong.

A rather dramatic bowling feat was emulated by the 37 year old Somerset fast bowler Alfonso Thomas in the County Championship match against Sussex as he took 4 wickets in 4 balls and removed four of the Sussex top order batsmen in doing so and certainly helped Somerset to the win in this game.

Sussex had actually proceeded to 33 without loss at the start of their second innings, then lost their first wicket on that score in the previous over to that which was then bowled by Thomas, then by the end of the following devastating Thomas over, they stood at 33-5. Thomas finished with figures of 20-7-40-5.

Alfonso Thomas is just another pie chucker according to the cognoscenti.

If so, then it just shows how woeful the Sussex top order were to allow this 'pie chucker' to take 4 on the bounce.

Thanks to the throwing of these sweet or savoury filled pastry comestibles Somerset are now top of the County Championship. Alfonso Thomas is the 3rd highest wicket taker in the County Championship Div 1 this season, thus far. 2nd best overs to maidens ratio. Joint highest for 5-wicket hauls in an innings. 3rd best average for bowlers who've bowled in at least 6 matches. All that has helped Somerset remain undefeated thus far this season. Long may his 'pie chucking' continue.

Those are just stats of course. The cognoscenti obviously know better.

Alfonso Thomas is just another pie chucker according to the cognoscenti.

"Pie chuckers" who take four of the wickets of the top order batsmen in a County Championship side in four consecutive balls are therefore another way of recognising the very sad reflection of the batting technique of those four batsmen who lost their wickets during that spell of pace bowling.

No excuses for, frankly, an awful display by the Sussex 'batting' yesterday

As for the old 'pie chuckers' tag that raises its head quite a few times each season, I guess that a bowler like Thomas with 936 wickets to his name fits the bill neatly as far as keyboard warriors, who've most likely never set foot on a senior cricket pitch in their lives, are concerned

Go out and face Thomas yourselves you cognoscenti, then let us know how you did

Alfonso Thomas getting four wickets in four balls says a lot more about the batsmen's lack of technique than it does about the quality of his bowling - apparently only one of the four wicket balls would have gone on to hit the stumps. He's a good bowler, not international quality (just one match for South Africa, and only a T20 at that) but generally good enough for county cricket and as a T20 gun for hire - maybe he could play for England?

Different deliveries scattered all around the place trying to outwit the batsman is good stuff in a T20 where the batsman/bowler contest is all about trying to guess what the other guy does. For use in first class cricket it's a risky strategy to rely on that, and therefore probably good to have bowlers who can properly test a batsman's technique with long spells of line and length in case the T20 bowling tactics don't work.

1st test match of the summer about to start. Three England debutants and Liam Plunkett recalled after a seven-year gap.

England: 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Sam Robson, 3 Gary Ballance, 4 Ian Bell, 5 Joe Root, 6 Moeen Ali, 7 Matt Prior (wkt), 8 Chris Jordan, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Liam Plunkett, 11 James Anderson

Root looking good to get the first English century in 5 months and 26 days.

Prior might get there first, but if he doesn't he will at least have a shot at getting the first South African century since mid-February.

Yep, Prior is a Saffer through and through, came to England at 11, something to do with his English father, and was educated and learned all his cricket in England, never mind though, I'm sure he wears underpants with a springbok on them

Chuffed 'The Beard That's Feared' had a decent start to his test career, though at least 2 more would have been nice... Hopefully he'll get more test caps than cousin Kabir

At 122-4, a critical point was reached, which in Australia would have resulted in the expected "lower-order" run through by the bowling attack.

Therefore a close of play score of 344-5 seems to suggest a transplant of "backbones and wills of steel" in the middle-order batting. Perhaps a similar transplant in the top order batsmen would be something to supplement matters.

The fact that by the end of the second day saw England move their score along to 575-9 declared, with Root moving on to an unbeaten double hundred and the tail enders scoring useful runs, Broad with 47 and Plunkett with 39, to build stands with Root, seems to suggest a good batting track.

The fact that in the 40 overs left for Sri Lanka to bat, they scored 140-1 to reduce the deficit, appear to bear out that point.

Mid-afternoon session on 3rd day...and a wicket finally falls.

Sri Lanka 277-3

Jayawardene falls to Broad for 55 (10x4), but Sangakkara (106 not out) and he added a valuable total of 126 for that last wicket. Broad will be relieved to have finally taken a wicket.

Sri Lanka had an unexpected first innings batting collapse, fortunately for England, moving from a very strong position of 385-4 to 453 all out, giving England a handy-sized first innings lead, but once again both Cook (20) and Robson (19) are already out, as after 17 overs England have moved on to 63-2 in their second innings.

Australian national selectors would certainly never pay any attention to performances in county cricket,

So Chris Rogers' form for Middlesex did absolutely nothing to gain him a call-up for the Australian Team last year, then?

County cricket is the finishing school for the rough diamonds from the colonies.

Good knock by Ballance today - hopefully the first of many centuries for England. Of course he grew up in Zimbabwe before making his home in this wonderful country - no doubt causing more gnashing of teeth from those with a chip on their shoulder down under south.

Well done to Sri Lanka for hanging on, but what on earth was Herath thinking by walking when his hand was several kilometres away from the bat and they had two reviews left, especially walking against Stuart Broad of all players?

Root will probably get MOTM, but Mathews is at least as deserving for his century against the run of play in the first innings and then taking his team all the way to the final few overs.

Well played the England bowlers and Anderson and the indomitable Broad in particular for making it a very exciting last day and almost forcing victory on a good wicket in a match dominated by batsmen. Not bad for a bunch of "pie-throwers".

Herath walked because he knew he had touched it - his reaction looking back was the giveaway.

Root deservedly man of the match.

I see that the "elderly pie-thrower" known as Jimmy Anderson, that certain "pundits" said was revealed to be at the end of his International cricket career after the Australian debacle, actually allowed himself the satisfaction of returning bowling figures in the Sri Lanka second innings of 19-10-25-4.

Anderson is probably past his peak but can still be a skilful and dangerous bowler when the mood and conditions suit him. Signs of the old reverse swing today. Broad was excellent too but Plunkett bowled too short I thought. Is Onions injured again ?

Yes, Onions is injured. Felt sorry for Plunkett really, flogging away on a pitch that gave him no help. ....but it was an exciting finish to the test, bound to happen against England after they held out for a draw on three occasions with nine wickets down in 2009/10 (Jimmy & Monty in Cardiff v Aus and then Onions twice in SA)

Thoroughly enjoyable day at Lord's today, excellent value for £20 in the end. The DRS drama on the penultimate ball was terrific.

Anyway a couple of things amused me. Firstly from the scorecard explaining the playing conditions for the final day:

"Stumps drawn on the fifth day at 6.00 or after 90 overs have been bowled, save that at 5.00, or after 75 overs have been bowled on that day, the last hour - during which a minimum of 15 overs shall be bowled, but otherwise Laws of Cricket 16.6, 16.7 and 16.8 shall apply - will commence."

So that's clear then. Also we no longer have a drinks break, but a "Harrogate Spring hydration break".

The same as Adam Gilchrist who used to walk (I'm sure he still does just not in this context ;))?

No joke, straight up!

It caused much merriment to the crowd at Chester-le-Street when they announced that several times through out the match.
