I'm surprised nobody has mentioned, this section of line is always busy from Exeter-London and I am not surprised you did not get a seat but next time you know, and make sure you book a reservation! Afterall, that is what they are there for.

She might not of known she was going to get that train, so couldn't make a reservation!

I didn't. I planned my day in the 40mins I had to Waterloo. I never really plan to travel on specific trains in advanced. Plus, I'd rather not pay for a seat reservation.

You would rather not pay at all, like I always said. "You think you're better than us with your priv" ;);)

Well, I am Northern ;)
I dont think I'm better than you. If it weren't for all you people paying for tickets then I wouldn't have a railway to travel on cause they'd all go bankrupt :p So thankyou:!:

Aren't they free with AP tickets?

I was on the 1302 from Exeter to London Paddington.
I don't purchase tickets as I'm usually broke, and I don't know which train I am going to use, it is much easier for me to just fill in a box.

I can see why it was busy. It comes from Penzance and is a 'Recommended' reservations service.

Luggage goes in the luggage rack why are you moaning about it ?

Why should it? What if I don't want to put it on the luggage rack because I want to keep getting stuff out of it, or I'm worried about it getting stolen?

I compltely agree, I never put my stuff in luggage racks, as I'm worried about people moving it, crushing it with their stuff, or obviously, someone stealing it.

Yes, and I'm not complaining that I didn't get a seat, as I'm not supposed to take seats from paying customers. I don't mind sitting in a vestibule, but when it gets so full and I get kicked out of where I'm sitting, then that's just stupid.

Don't get me wrong - I always move my bag without being asked, if the train is looking like it is getting busy, but I'll put it above my seat or underneath it or something similar.

Me too. Mine's usually by my feet. Never on a seat, as I don't like to ask people to move their stuff.

Aren't they free with AP tickets?
Compulsory with advance purchase, yes.

However she was on a free staff pass, which does not entitle her to a seat. A seat can only be occupied if it is not required by any fare-paying passengers and must be given up to passengers joining en-route. Retired staff are exempt from this rule.

So, if a staff pass holder knows a train will have standees, then they have to resign themselves to standing when the train gets busy. That's always going to be the case on Penzance trains east of Exeter at this time of year.

Ah right, I wasn't aware of that, although it's fair enough as we've paid for the seat. Mind you that's supposed to be the case with kids under 5 without tickets and it's often rarely enforced.

Yes, and I never take places on crowded trains when people are standing up. I just have a problem with being moved from a vestibule when I could have easily told someone to move their stuff and taken a seat. I was sitting on my own in the vesitbule, being quiet and minding my own business. I wasn't causing any inconvenience to FC passengers on their way to the toilets. I just don't understand why the guard felt he had to move me.

Neither do I.

Some guards are jobsworths who treat passengers as scum rather than customers. Fortunately, in my experience there are not many of them. It's just that when people do encounter them, they are likely to report it (and rightly so), which makes it seem that there are more jobsworths than there are. Unfortunately these people have given FGW (and GNER) a bad name.

The problem is, technically the guard was in the right, since the vestibules are considered First Class accomodation, and even if standard is full the guard doesn't have to let you in first class, but they can do if they want. Of cource, if standard class was so full that there was hardly any standing room, then I can't see why he didn't allow you to stand in first class. Then again, you get jobsworths everywhere. I often wonder aswell if the jobsworths are the same people who will be first to twist rules if it benefits themselves or friends/family, and are the sort who are just as bad when in situations where they are the customer. Wouldn't suprise me at all.

Paaah, a mere hour? In the 'good old days' I stood all the way from Great Yarmouth to Nuneaton - a 5 hour trip - because British Rail formed a booked 5 car train with a single 158 - and it was only to Nuneaton because it was the day Birmingham New Street caught fire and we had to change for a West Coast set that was diverted to Stafford and reversed into Wolverhampton - in fact I seem to recall all West Coast and Cross Country trains that day reversing into Wolverhampton, even the ones that weren't booked to stop there, not complaining anyway!

I've had issue on MML, but I find MML staff blow hot and cold (some are great, some are awful, most are in between). Worst thing was I was only on from Leicester to Loughborough (just over 10mins), I needed to be in the front 4 coaches anyway for Loughborough (reversed set) all of which were first class anyway (it was the "Master Cutler" set which has an extra first class coach), and I was at the front since it wasn't announced as being reversed.

I can imagine how busy it would have been. Some services are already nearly fully seated by Newton Abbot let along stopping at Exeter, Tiveton AND Taunton! 2 hours and a half in a crowded vestiable is wrong although the guard was technically in the right and i'm sure if you explained that you felt unsafe etc then he would have allowed you.

Nah, the guard was a *******. See, it wasn't even a vestibule where I ended up (I don't know the name for it), it was the bit where the coaches join up. Which as you can imagine, is unbelievably hard to stand in, as it's wobbly and kept bashing me in the back, and people kept wanting to move though the coach and there was nothing to hold onto to secure myself on not fall into them.

Seems strange, if the train was as packed as you claim, then I doubt the TM would actually bother walking through, either:
A: Abuse he would get.
B: Wouldn't be able to as it is obviously overly crowded.

He probabally came out from the buffet (where most the lazy buggers sit) and just go out to do the doors, or in this case, check tickets

If standard is that packed TM's will normally sit on the worktop in the kitchen or use the TM's compartment just next to the buffet. They'll only come out to do FC tickets or the doors from the closest FC panel.

I didn't know that New Street has caught fire before?

It was in 1995 - someone chucked a cigarette which set fire to the underside of an escalator, this is the reason why New Street was made no smoking.

Central Trains wasn't privatised until 1997 and at that point was Central Trains Limited trading as Regional Railways Central.
