Carlisle, being so far from any other club, maybe with the exception of Workington when in the league, once had a song (still do??) "No-one hates us, we don't care" and were pleading for another club to "hate" them for the sake of a bit of rivalry!
I would have thought, although never in the same league (Scotland/England) they would have disliked the Gretna of years ago which was developed on "monopoly money" by a rich investor which then went bankrupt and demised. Happily there is a "new" Gretna (2008)!

There was a story that Brooks Mileson, having failed to buy Carlisle United, bought Gretna at a time that Carlisle were in severe financial difficulties. His plan (allegedly) was that if Carlisle went bust, he would buy Brunton Park and move Gretna there and rename them Carlisle. A plausible plan, there is no restriction on a club based in England playing in the Scottish League, Berwick Rangers were already doing that, and he must have thought he could win over the Carlisle Utd fans with the promise of big games against Rangers and Celtic and the possibility of European football. Carlisle Utd foiled his scheme by surviving and bouncing back into the upper leagues
